Proverbs 17
1 Better is a dry morsel and quietness therewith, than an house full of feasting with strife.
੧ਚੈਨ ਨਾਲ ਰੁੱਖੀ ਮਿੱਸੀ ਇਹ ਦੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਚੰਗੀ ਹੈ, ਭਈ ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹੋਣ ਪਰ ਝਗੜਾ ਹੋਵੇ।
2 A servant that dealeth wisely shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part in the inheritance among the brethren.
੨ਸਿਆਣਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਸ਼ਰਮਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਚਲਾਵੇਗਾ, ਅਤੇ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੰਡ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਪਾਵੇਗਾ।
3 The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.
੩ਚਾਂਦੀ ਲਈ ਕੁਠਾਲੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੋਨੇ ਲਈ ਭੱਠੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਮਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਰਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਹੈ।
4 An evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; [and] a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.
੪ਕੁਕਰਮੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਧਿਆਨ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਝੂਠਾ ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਜ਼ਬਾਨ ਵੱਲ ਕੰਨ ਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
5 Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: [and] he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.
੫ਜਿਹੜਾ ਗਰੀਬ ਦਾ ਮਜ਼ਾਕ ਉਡਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਬਿਪਤਾ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਨਿਰਦੋਸ਼ ਨਾ ਠਹਿਰੇਗਾ।
6 Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
੬ਪੋਤੇ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਟ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਪੁੱਤਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਪੇ ਹਨ।
7 Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
੭ਜਦ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਬੋਲ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਫੱਬਦਾ, ਤਾਂ ਪਤਵੰਤ ਨੂੰ ਝੂਠੇ ਬੁੱਲ੍ਹ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਫੱਬਣਗੇ?
8 A gift is [as] a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
੮ਰਿਸ਼ਵਤ ਉਹ ਦੇ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਮੁੱਲਾ ਰਤਨ ਹੈ, ਜਿੱਧਰ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਫ਼ਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
9 He that covereth a transgression seeketh love: but he that harpeth on a matter separateth chief friends.
੯ਜਿਹੜਾ ਅਪਰਾਧ ਨੂੰ ਢੱਕ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਜੋ ਕਿਸੇ ਗੱਲ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਰ-ਬਾਰ ਛੇੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪੱਕੇ ਮਿੱਤਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਫੁੱਟ ਪਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
10 A rebuke entereth deeper into one that hath understanding than an hundred stripes into a fool.
੧੦ਸਮਝ ਵਾਲੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਝਿੜਕ, ਮੂਰਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਸੌ ਕੋਰੜਿਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਅਸਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
11 An evil man seeketh only rebellion; therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
੧੧ਭੈੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕੇਵਲ ਝਗੜਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੀ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੋ ਇੱਕ ਜ਼ਾਲਮ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ਵਾਹਕ ਉਹ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।
12 Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
੧੨ਮੂਰਖਤਾ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਡੁੱਬੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਨਾਲੋਂ, ਰਿੱਛਣੀ ਜਿਹ ਦੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਖੋਹ ਲਏ ਗਏ ਹੋਣ, ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣਾ ਭਲਾ ਹੈ।
13 Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
੧੩ਜਿਹੜਾ ਭਲਿਆਈ ਦੇ ਬਦਲੇ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਦੇ ਘਰੋਂ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ਕਦੇ ਨਾ ਹੱਟੇਗੀ।
14 The beginning of strife is [as] when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before there be quarrelling.
੧੪ਝਗੜੇ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਵਹਾ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਝਗੜਾ ਛਿੜਨ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਉਹ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਦੇ।
15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD.
੧੫ਜਿਹੜਾ ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਨੂੰ ਧਰਮੀ ਠਹਿਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਧਰਮੀ ਤੇ ਦੋਸ਼ ਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਘਿਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
16 Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, seeing he hath no understanding?
੧੬ਮੂਰਖ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੁੱਧ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੱਲ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਪੈਸਾ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ ਕੀ ਲਾਭ, ਜਦ ਉਹ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ?
17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
੧੭ਮਿੱਤਰ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਭਰਾ ਬਿਪਤਾ ਦੇ ਦਿਨ ਲਈ ਜੰਮਿਆ ਹੈ।
18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his neighbour.
੧੮ਬੇਸਮਝ ਆਦਮੀ ਹੱਥ ਮਿਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਆਂਢੀ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਜ਼ਮਾਨਤੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
19 He loveth transgression that loveth strife: he that raiseth high his gate seeketh destruction.
੧੯ਜੋ ਝਗੜੇ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਅਪਰਾਧ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਸ ਭਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
20 He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
੨੦ਟੇਢੇ ਮਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਭਲਿਆਈ ਨਾ ਪਾਵੇਗਾ, ਅਤੇ ਪੁੱਠੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਿਪਤਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਵੇਗਾ।
21 He that begetteth a fool [doeth it] to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.
੨੧ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਅਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ।
22 A merry heart is a good medicine: but a broken spirit drieth up the bones.
੨੨ਖੁਸ਼ ਦਿਲੀ ਚੰਗੀ ਦਵਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਉਦਾਸ ਮਨ ਹੱਡੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਕਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
23 A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom, to pervert the ways of judgment.
੨੩ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਬੁੱਕਲ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਰਿਸ਼ਵਤ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਨਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਰਗਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਗਾੜ ਦੇਵੇ।
24 Wisdom is before the face of him that hath understanding: but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
੨੪ਬੁੱਧ ਸਮਝ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਮੂਰਖ ਦੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਬੰਨਿਆ ਵੱਲ ਲੱਗੀਆਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
25 A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.
੨੫ਮੂਰਖ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਉ ਲਈ ਦੁੱਖ, ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਂ ਲਈ ਕੁੜੱਤਣ ਹੈ।
26 Also to punish the righteous is not good, [nor] to smite the noble for [their] uprightness.
੨੬ਧਰਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਦੇਣਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਧਿਆਈ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਮਾਰਨਾ।
27 He that spareth his words hath knowledge: and he that is of a cool spirit is a man of understanding.
੨੭ਜਿਹੜਾ ਘੱਟ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਸਮਝ ਵਾਲਾ ਸ਼ੀਲ ਸੁਭਾਓ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: when he shutteth his lips, he is [esteemed as] prudent.
੨੮ਮੂਰਖ ਵੀ ਜਿੰਨਾਂ ਚਿਰ ਚੁੱਪ ਰਹੇ ਬੁੱਧਵਾਨ ਹੀ ਗਿਣੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਬੰਦ ਰੱਖੇ ਤਾਂ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
