Matthew 8
1 And when he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.
Jésus étant descendu de la montagne, une grande multitude le suivit.
2 And behold, there came to him a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
Et un lépreux s’étant approché, se prosterna devant lui, en disant: « Seigneur, si vous voulez, vous pouvez me guérir. »
3 And he stretched forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou made clean. And straightway his leprosy was cleansed.
Jésus étendit la main, le toucha et dit: « Je le veux, sois guéri. » Et à l’instant sa lèpre fut guérie.
4 And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
Alors Jésus lui dit: « Garde-toi d’en parler à personne; mais va te montrer au prêtre, et offre le don prescrit par Moïse pour attester au peuple [ta guérison]. »
5 And when he was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,
Comme Jésus entrait dans Capharnaüm, un centurion l’aborda
6 and saying, Lord, my servant lieth in the house sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.
et lui fit cette prière: « Seigneur, mon serviteur est couché dans ma maison, frappé de paralysie, et il souffre cruellement. »
7 And he saith unto him, I will come and heal him.
Jésus lui dit: « J’irai et je le guérirai. —
8 And the centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but only say the word, and my servant shall be healed.
Seigneur, répondit le centurion, je ne suis pas digne que tu entres sous mon toit; mais dis seulement une parole, et mon serviteur sera guéri.
9 For I also am a man under authority, having under myself soldiers: and I say to this one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
Car moi qui suis soumis à des supérieurs, j’ai des soldats sous mes ordres, et je dis à l’un: Va, et il va; et à un autre: Viens, et il vient; et à mon serviteur: Fais cela, et il le fait. »
10 And when Jesus heard it, he marveled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
En entendant ces paroles, Jésus fut dans l’admiration, et dit à ceux qui le suivaient: « Je vous le dis en vérité, dans Israël même, je n’ai pas trouvé une si grande foi.
11 And I say unto you, that many shall come from the east and the west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven:
C’est pourquoi je vous dis que beaucoup viendront de l’Orient et de l’Occident, et auront place au festin avec Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, dans le royaume des cieux,
12 but the sons of the kingdom shall be cast forth into the outer darkness: there shall be the weeping and gnashing of teeth.
tandis que les fils du royaume seront jetés dans les ténèbres extérieures: c’est là qu’il y aura des pleurs et des grincements de dents. »
13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; as thou hast believed, [so] be it done unto thee. And the servant was healed in that hour.
Alors Jésus dit au centurion: « Va, et qu’il te soit fait selon ta foi; » et à l’heure même son serviteur fut guéri.
14 And when Jesus was come into Peter’s house, he saw his wife’s mother lying sick of a fever.
Et Jésus étant venu dans la maison de Pierre, y trouva sa belle-mère qui était au lit, tourmentée par la fièvre.
15 And he touched her hand, and the fever left her; and she arose, and ministered unto him.
Il lui toucha la main, et la fièvre la quitta; aussitôt elle se leva, et se mit à les servir.
16 And when even was come, they brought unto him many possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all that were sick:
Sur le soir, on lui présenta plusieurs démoniaques, et d’un mot il chassa les esprits et guérit tous les malades:
17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our diseases.
accomplissant ainsi cette parole du prophète Isaïe: « Il a pris nos infirmités, et s’est chargé de nos maladies. »
18 Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side.
Jésus, voyant une grande multitude autour de lui, donna l’ordre de passer à l’autre bord [du lac.]
19 And there came a scribe, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
Alors un Scribe s’approcha et lui dit: « Maître, je vous suivrai partout où vous irez. »
20 And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the heaven [have] nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
Jésus lui répondit: « Les renards ont leurs tanières, et les oiseaux du ciel leurs nids; mais le Fils de l’homme n’a pas où reposer sa tête. »
21 And another of the disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
Un autre, du nombre des disciples, lui dit: « Seigneur, permettez-moi d’aller auparavant ensevelir mon père. »
22 But Jesus saith unto him, Follow me; and leave the dead to bury their own dead.
Mais Jésus lui répondit: « Suis-moi, et laisse les morts ensevelir leurs morts. »
23 And when he was entered into a boat, his disciples followed him.
Il entra alors dans la barque, suivi de ses disciples.
24 And behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the boat was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.
Et voilà qu’une grande agitation se fit dans la mer, de sorte que les flots couvraient la barque: lui, cependant, dormait.
25 And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Save, Lord; we perish.
Ses disciples venant à lui l’éveillèrent et lui dirent: « Seigneur, sauvez-nous, nous périssons! »
26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
Jésus leur dit: « Pourquoi craignez-vous, hommes de peu de foi? » Alors il se leva, commanda aux vents et à la mer, et il se fit un grand calme.
27 And the men marveled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?
Et saisis d’admiration, tous disaient: « Quel est celui-ci, que les vents même et la mer lui obéissent? »
28 And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gadarenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming forth out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man could pass by that way.
Jésus ayant abordé de l’autre côté du lac, dans le pays des Géraséniens, deux démoniaques sortirent des sépulcres et s’avancèrent vers lui; ils étaient si furieux, que personne n’osait passer par ce chemin.
29 And behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?
Et ils se mirent à crier: « Qu’avons-nous à faire avec toi, Jésus, Fils de Dieu? Es-tu venu ici pour nous tourmenter avant le temps? »
30 Now there was afar off from them a herd of many swine feeding.
Or il y avait, à quelque distance, un nombreux troupeau de porcs qui paissaient.
31 And the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, send us away into the herd of swine.
Et les démons firent à Jésus cette prière: « Si tu nous chasses d’ici, envoie-nous dans ce troupeau de porcs. »
32 And he said unto them, Go. And they came out, and went into the swine: and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep into the sea, and perished in the waters.
Il leur dit: « Allez. » Ils sortirent [du corps des possédés, ] et entrèrent dans les pourceaux. Au même instant, tout le troupeau prenant sa course se précipita par les pentes escarpées dans la mer, et ils périrent dans les eaux.
33 And they that fed them fled, and went away into the city, and told everything, and what was befallen to them that were possessed with devils.
Les gardiens s’enfuirent, et ils vinrent dans la ville, où ils racontèrent toutes ces choses et ce qui était arrivé aux démoniaques.
34 And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought [him] that he would depart from their borders.
Aussitôt toute la ville sortit au-devant de Jésus, et dès qu’ils le virent, ils le supplièrent de quitter leur territoire.
