Judges 6

1 And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

Mais les enfants d’Israël firent le mal en la présence du Seigneur, qui les livra à la main de Madian pendant sept ans,

2 And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of Midian the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strong holds.

Et ils furent très opprimés par eux. Ils se firent des antres et des cavernes dans les montagnes, et des lieux très fortifiés pour se défendre.

3 And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them;

Lorsqu’Israël avait semé, montaient Madian et Amalec et tous les autres peuples des nations orientales;

4 and they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.

Et plantant chez eux leurs tentes, comme ils étaient au milieu des moissons, ils ravageaient tout jusqu’à Gaza; et ils ne laissaient absolument rien en Israël, de tout ce qui était nécessaire à la vie, ni brebis, ni bœufs, ni ânes.

5 For they came up with their cattle and their tents, they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number: and they came into the land to destroy it.

Car ils venaient eux-mêmes et tous leurs troupeaux avec leurs tabernacles; et comme des sauterelles, cette multitude innombrable d’hommes et de chameaux remplissait tout, ravageant tout ce qu’elle touchait.

6 And Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.

Israël fut donc très humilié en présence de Madian.

7 And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of Midian,

Et il cria au Seigneur, demandant secours contre les Madianites.

8 that the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel: and he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

Le Seigneur leur envoya un homme, prophète, qui leur dit: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël: C’est moi qui vous ai fait monter de l’Égypte, et qui vous ai retirés de la maison de servitude;

9 and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land;

Je vous ai délivrés de la main des Egyptiens, et de tous les ennemis qui vous affligeaient; je les ai chassés à votre entrée, et je vous ai livré leur terre.

10 and I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; ye shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not hearkened unto my voice.

Et j’ai dit: Je suis le Seigneur votre Dieu, ne craignez point les dieux des Amorrhéens dans la terre desquels vous habitez. Et vous n’avez pas voulu écouter ma voix.

11 And the angel of the LORD came and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

Or, vint l’ange du Seigneur et il s’assit sous le chêne qui était à Ephra et qui appartenait à Joas, père de la famille d’Ezri. Et comme Gédéon, son fils, battait et vannait du blé dans le pressoir pour échapper à Madian,

12 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

L’ange du Seigneur apparut et lui dit: Le Seigneur est avec toi, ô le plus fort des hommes!

13 And Gideon said unto him, Oh my lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.

Et Gédéon lui répondit: Je vous conjure, mon seigneur, si le Seigneur est avec nous, pourquoi tout cela a-t-il fondu sur nous? Où sont ses merveilles que nous ont racontées nos pères? car ils ont dit: Le Seigneur nous a retirés de l’Égypte. Mais maintenant le Seigneur nous a abandonnés, et nous a livrés à la main de Madian.

14 And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian: have not I sent thee?

Et le Seigneur le regarda et dit: Va avec cette tienne force, et tu délivreras Israël de la main de Madian. Sache que je t’ai envoyé.

15 And he said unto him, Oh Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.

Gédéon répondant, dit: Je vous conjure, mon seigneur, comment délivrerai-je Israël? Voilà que ma famille est la dernière en Manassé, et que moi je suis le plus petit dans la maison de mon père.

16 And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.

Et le Seigneur lui dit: Moi-même, je serai avec toi, et tu battras Madian comme un seul homme.

17 And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that it is thou that talkest with me.

Alors Gédéon: Si j’ai, dit-il, trouvé grâce devant vous, donnez-moi un signe que c’est vous qui me parlez.

18 Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and lay it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.

Et ne vous retirez point d’ici, jusqu’à ce que je retourne vers vous, portant mon sacrifice, et vous l’offrant. L’ange lui répondit: Oui, j’attendrai ton retour.

19 And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.

C’est pourquoi Gédéon entra chez lui, et fit cuire un chevreau et des pains azymes d’une mesure de farine, • et plaçant la chair dans la corbeille, et le jus de la chair dans la marmite, il porta le tout sous le chêne, et le lui offrit.

20 And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

L’ange du Seigneur lui dit: Prends la chair et les pains azymes, et pose-les sur cette pierre, et verse le jus dessus. Lorsqu’il eut fait ainsi,

21 Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there went up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.

L’ange du Seigneur étendit le bout de la verge qu’il tenait à la main, et il toucha la chair et les pains azymes: et le feu monta de la pierre, et consuma la chair et les pains azymes; mais l’ange du Seigneur disparut de devant ses yeux.

22 And Gideon saw that he was the angel of the LORD; and Gideon said, Alas, O Lord GOD! forasmuch as I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face.

Et Gédéon, voyant que c’était l’ange du Seigneur, dit: Hélas! Seigneur mon Dieu, j’ai vu l’ange du Seigneur face à face.

23 And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.

Et le Seigneur lui répondit: Paix avec toi! ne crains point, tu ne mourras pas.

24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Gédéon bâtit donc là un autel au Seigneur et il l’appela Paix du Seigneur, jusqu’au présent jour. Et lorsqu’il était encore à Ephra, qui est à la famille d’Ezri,

25 And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the Asherah that is by it:

Le Seigneur lui dit en cette nuit-là: Prends le taureau de ton père et un autre taureau de sept ans, et tu détruiras l’autel de Baal, qui est à ton père; et le bois qui est autour de l’autel, coupe-le.

26 and build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this strong hold, in the orderly manner, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which thou shalt cut down.

Tu bâtiras aussi un autel au Seigneur ton Dieu sur le sommet de cette pierre, sur laquelle tu as déjà posé le sacrifice; et tu prendras avec toi le second taureau, et tu offriras un holocauste sur un amas d’arbres que tu auras coupés de ce bois.

27 Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had spoken unto him: and it came to pass, because he feared his father’s household and the men of the city, so that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

Gédéon ayant donc pris dix hommes de ses serviteurs, fit comme lui avait ordonné le Seigneur. Mais craignant la maison de son père et les hommes de cette ville-là, il ne voulut pas le faire pendant le jour, mais il accomplit toutes choses de nuit.

28 And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.

Et lorsque les hommes de cette ville se furent levés au matin, ils virent l’autel de Baal détruit, le bois coupé, et le second taureau mis sur l’autel qui venait d’être bâti.

29 And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they inquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.

Alors ils se dirent les uns aux autres: Qui a fait cela? Et comme ils cherchaient partout l’auteur du fait, on leur dit: C’est Gédéon, fils de Joas, qui a fait toutes ces choses.

30 Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the Asherah that was by it.

Et ils dirent à Joas: Fais venir ton fils ici, afin qu’il meure, parce qu’il a détruit l’autel de Baal, et qu’il a coupé le bois.

31 And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? or will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst [it is yet] morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath broken down his altar.

Joas leur répondit: Est-ce que vous êtes les vengeurs de Baal, pour que vous combattiez pour lui? Que celui qui est son ennemi, meure avant que la lumière de demain ne vienne. S’il est dieu, qu’il se venge lui-même de celui qui a démoli son autel.

32 Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath broken down his altar.

Depuis ce jour Gédéon fut appelé Jérobaal, parce que Joas avait dit: Que Baal se venge de celui qui a démoli son autel.

33 Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel

Ainsi, tout Madian, Amalec et les peuples orientaux se réunirent, et passant le Jourdain, ils campèrent dans la vallée de Jezraël.

34 But the spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon; and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together after him.

Mais l’esprit du Seigneur remplit Gédéon, qui sonnant de la trompette, convoqua la maison d’Abiézer, afin qu’elle le suivît.

35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also were gathered together after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

Et il envoya des messagers à tout Manassé, qui, lui aussi, le suivit; et il envoya d’autres messagers à Aser, à Zabulon et à Nephthali qui vinrent à sa rencontre.

36 And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast spoken,

Alors Gédéon dit à Dieu: Si vous sauvez par ma main Israël, comme vous avez dit,

37 behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing-floor; if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the ground, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast spoken.

Je mettrai cette toison dans l’aire: s’il y a de la rosée sur la toison seule, et sur toute la terre de la sécheresse, je saurai que c’est par ma main, comme vous avez dit, que vous délivrerez Israël.

38 And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and pressed the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowlful of water.

Et il fut fait ainsi. Et se levant de nuit, et pressant la toison, il remplit une conque de rosée.

39 And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.

Et Gédéon dit de nouveau à Dieu: Que votre fureur ne s’irrite point contre moi, si je fais encore une fois une tentative, en demandant un signe dans la toison. Je demande que la toison seule soit sèche, et que toute la terre soit mouillée de rosée.

40 And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

Et Dieu fit en cette nuit-là comme il avait demandé: et il y eut de la sécheresse sur la toison seule, et de la rosée sur toute la terre.
