Job 38
1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
Alors l'Eternel répondit à Job du milieu d'un tourbillon, et lui dit:
2 Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
Qui est celui-ci qui obscurcit le conseil par des paroles sans science?
3 Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.
Ceins maintenant tes reins comme un vaillant homme, et je t'interrogerai, et tu me feras voir quelle est ta science.
4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
Où étais-tu quand je fondais la terre? dis-le-moi, si tu as de l'intelligence.
5 Who determined the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who stretched the line upon it?
Qui est-ce qui en a réglé les mesures? le sais-tu? ou qui est-ce qui a appliqué le niveau sur elle?
6 Whereupon were the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
Sur quoi sont plantés ses pilotis, ou qui est celui qui a posé la pierre angulaire pour la soutenir.
7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Quand les étoiles du matin se réjouissaient ensemble, et que les fils de Dieu chantaient en triomphe?
8 [Or who] shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, [as if] it had issued out of the womb;
Qui est-ce qui a renfermé la mer dans ses bords, quand elle fut tirée de la matrice, [et] qu'elle en sortit?
9 When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
Quand je mis la nuée pour sa couverture, et l'obscurité pour ses langes?
10 And prescribed for it my decree, and set bars and doors,
Et que j'établis sur elle mon ordonnance, et lui mis des barrières et des portes?
11 And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further; and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
Et lui dis: Tu viendras jusque là, et tu ne passeras point plus avant, et ici s'arrêtera l'élévation de tes ondes.
12 Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days [began, and] caused the dayspring to know its place;
As-tu, depuis que tu es au monde, commandé au point du jour; et as-tu montré à l'aube du jour le lieu où elle doit se lever?
13 That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and the wicked be shaken out of it?
Afin qu'elle saisisse les extrémités de la terre, et que les méchants se retirent à l'écart,
14 It is changed as clay under the seal; and [all things] stand forth as a garment:
Et qu'elle prenne une nouvelle forme, comme une argile figurée; et que [toutes choses y] paraissent comme avec de [nouveaux] habits,
15 And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm is broken.
Et que la clarté soit défendue aux méchants, et que le bras élevé soit rompu?
16 Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep?
Es-tu venu jusqu'aux gouffres de la mer, et t'es-tu promené au fond des abîmes?
17 Have the gates of death been revealed unto thee? or hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?
Les portes de la mort se sont-elles découvertes à toi? as-tu vu les portes de l'ombre de la mort?
18 Hast thou comprehended the breadth of the earth? declare, if thou knowest it all.
As-tu compris toute l'étendue de la terre? si tu l'as toute connue, montre-le.
19 Where is the way to the dwelling of light, and as for darkness, where is the place thereof;
En quel endroit se tient la lumière, et où est le lieu des ténèbres?
20 That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest discern the paths to the house thereof?
Que tu ailles prendre l'une et l'autre en son quartier, et que tu saches le chemin de leur maison?
21 [Doubtless], thou knowest, for thou wast then born, and the number of thy days is great!
Tu le sais; car alors tu naquis, et le nombre de tes jours est grand.
22 Hast thou entered the treasuries of the snow, or hast thou seen the treasuries of the hail,
Es-tu entré dans les trésors de la neige? As-tu vu les trésors de la grêle,
23 Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
Laquelle je retiens pour le temps de l'affliction, et pour le jour du choc et du combat?
24 By what way is the light parted, or the east wind scattered upon the earth?
Par quel chemin se partage la lumière, [et par quelle voie] le vent d'Orient se répand-il sur la terre?
25 Who hath cleft a channel for the waterflood, or a way for the lightning of the thunder;
Qui est-ce qui a ouvert les conduits aux inondations, et le chemin à l'éclair des tonnerres,
26 To cause it to rain on a land where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
Pour faire pleuvoir sur une terre où il n'y a personne, et sur le désert où il ne demeure aucun homme.
27 To satisfy the waste and desolate [ground]; and to cause the tender grass to spring forth?
Pour arroser abondamment les lieux solitaires et déserts, et pour faire pousser le germe de l'herbe?
28 Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?
La pluie n'a-t-elle point de père? ou qui est-ce qui produit les gouttes de la rosée?
29 Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?
Du ventre de qui sort la glace? et qui est-ce qui engendre le frimas du ciel?
30 The waters are hidden as [with] stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
Les eaux se cachent étant durcies comme une pierre, et le dessus de l'abîme se prend.
31 Canst thou bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
Pourrais-tu retenir les délices de la Poussinière, ou faire lever les tempêtes [qu'excite] la constellation d'Orion?
32 Canst thou lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season? or canst thou guide the Bear with her train?
Peux-tu faire lever en leur temps les signes du Zodiaque? et conduire la petite Ourse avec les étoiles?
33 Knowest thou the ordinances of the heavens? canst thou establish the dominion thereof in the earth?
Connais-tu l'ordre des cieux, et disposeras-tu de leur gouvernement sur la terre?
34 Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
Crieras-tu à haute voix à la nuée, afin qu'une abondance d'eaux t'arrose?
35 Canst thou send forth lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?
Enverras-tu les foudres de sorte qu'elles partent, et te disent: Nous voici?
36 Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the mind?
Qui est-ce qui a mis la sagesse dans les reins? ou qui a donné au cœur l'intelligence?
37 Who can number the clouds by wisdom? or who can pour out the bottles of heaven,
Qui est-ce qui a assez d'intelligence pour compter les nuées, et pour placer les outres des cieux,
38 When the dust runneth into a mass, and the clods cleave fast together?
Quand la poudre est détrempée par les eaux qui l'arrosent, et que les fentes [de la terre] viennent à se rejoindre?
39 Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lioness? or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
Chasseras-tu de la proie pour le vieux lion, et rassasieras-tu les lionceaux qui cherchent leur vie,
40 When they couch in their dens, [and] abide in the covert to lie in wait?
Quand ils se tapissent dans leurs antres, et qu'ils se tiennent dans leurs forts aux aguets?
41 Who provideth for the raven his food, when his young ones cry unto God, [and] wander for lack of meat?
Qui est-ce qui apprête la nourriture au corbeau, quand ses petits crient au [Dieu] Fort, et qu'ils vont errants, parce qu'ils n'ont point de quoi manger?
