Jeremiah 29

1 Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders of the captivity, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon:

Et voici les paroles de la lettre que Jérémie le prophète envoya de Jérusalem aux restes des anciens de la transmigration, et aux prêtres, et aux prophètes, et à tout le peuple que Nabuchodonosor avait fait passer de Jérusalem à Babylone.

2 (after that Jeconiah the king, and the queen-mother, and the eunuchs, [and] the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the craftsmen, and the smiths, were departed from Jerusalem; )

Après que le roi Jéchonias fut sorti de Jérusalem, ainsi que la reine, et les eunuques, et les princes de Juda et de Jérusalem, et l’artisan, et le lapidaire;

3 by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, ) saying,

Par l’entremise d’Elasa, fils de Saphan, et par Gamarias, fils d’Helcias, que Sédécias, roi de Juda, envoya à Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, à Babylone, Jérémie, disait:

4 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all the captivity, whom I have caused to be carried away captive from Jerusalem unto Babylon:

Voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées, Dieu d’Israël, à tous les fils de la transmigration que j’ai transférés de Jérusalem à Babylone:

5 Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them;

Bâtissez des maisons, et habitez-les; plantez des jardins et mangez-en les fruits;

6 Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; and multiply ye there, and be not diminished.

Prenez des femmes, et engendrez des fils et des filles; donnez à vos fils des femmes, et donnez vos filles à des maris, et qu’elles enfantent des fils et des filles; et multipliez-vous là, et ne soyez pas en petit nombre.

7 And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.

Et recherchez la paix de la cité dans laquelle je vous ai fait émigrer, et priez pour elle le Seigneur, parce que dans sa paix sera votre paix.

8 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Let not your prophets that be in the midst of you, and your diviners, deceive you, neither hearken ye to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed.

Car voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées. Dieu d’Israël: Qu’ils ne vous séduisent pas, vos prophètes qui sont au milieu de vous, et vos devins; et ne faites pas attention aux songes que vous songez;

9 For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the LORD.

Parce que c’est faussement qu’eux vous prophétisent en mon nom, et je ne les ai point envoyés, dit le Seigneur,

10 For thus saith the LORD, After seventy years be accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

Parce que voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Lorsque soixante-dix ans auront commencé d’être accomplis à Babylone, je vous visiterai; et je réaliserai pour vous ma bonne parole en vous ramenant en ce lieu.

11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope in your latter end.

Car moi, je sais les pensées que je pense sur vous, dit le Seigneur, pensées de paix et non d’affliction: c’est de vous accorder la fin de vos maux et la patience.

12 And ye shall call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

Et vous m’invoquerez, et vous partirez; vous me prierez, et moi je vous exaucerai.

13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all year heart.

Vous me chercherez et vous me trouverez, lorsque vous m’aurez cherché de tout votre cœur.

14 And I will be found of you, saith the LORD, and I will turn again your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the LORD; and I will bring you again unto the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.

Et je serai trouvé par vous, dit le Seigneur; et je vous ramènerai vos captifs, et je vous rassemblerai du milieu de toutes les nations et de tous les lieux dans lesquels je vous ai chassés, dit le Seigneur; et je vous ferai revenir du lieu dans lequel je vous ai fait émigrer,

15 For ye have said, The LORD hath raised us up prophets in Babylon.

Parce que vous avez dit: Le Seigneur a suscité pour nous des prophètes à Babylone.

16 for thus saith the LORD concerning the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and concerning all the people that dwell in this city, your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity;

Parce que voici ce que dit le Seigneur au roi qui est assis sur le trône de David, et à tout le peuple habitant de cette ville, à vos frères qui ne sont pas allés avec vous en captivité.

17 thus saith the LORD of hosts: Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so bad.

Voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées: Voilà, j’enverrai contre eux le glaive, la famine et la peste, et je les rendrai comme des figues mauvaises, qui ne peuvent être mangées, parce qu’elles sont très mauvaises.

18 And I will pursue after them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth, to be an execration, and an astonishment, and an hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them:

Et je les poursuivrai par le glaive, et par la famine, et par la peste; et je les livrerai en vexation à tous les royaumes de la terre; en malédiction, et en stupeur, et en sifflement, et en opprobre, à toutes les nations chez lesquelles moi-même je les ai chassés;

19 because they have not hearkened to my words, saith the LORD, wherewith I sent unto them my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but ye would not hear, saith the LORD.

Parce qu’ils n’ont pas écouté mes paroles, dit le Seigneur, que je leur ai adressées par mes serviteurs les prophètes, me levant durant la nuit, et les envoyant; et vous ne m’avez pas écouté, dit le Seigneur.

20 Hear ye therefore the word of the LORD, all ye of the captivity, whom I have sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.

Vous donc, écoutez la parole du Seigneur, vous tous, fils de la transmigration, que j’ai envoyés de Jérusalem à Babylone.

21 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and concerning Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, which prophesy a lie unto you in my name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes;

Voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées. Dieu d’Israël, à Achab, fils de Colias, et à Sédécias, fils de Maasias, qui vous prophétisent en mon nom le mensonge: Voilà que moi je les livrerai aux mains de Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, et il les frappera sous vos yeux.

22 and of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captives of Judah which are in Babylon, saying, The LORD make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king Babylon roasted in the fire:

Et ils seront pris comme exemple de malédiction par tous les fils de la transmigration de Juda qui sont à Babylone, et qui diront: Que le Seigneur te traite comme Sédécias et comme Achab, que le roi de Babylone a fait griller au feu,

23 because they have wrought folly in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbours’ wives, and have spoken words in my name falsely, which I commanded them not; and I am he that knoweth, and am witness, saith the LORD.

Parce qu’ils ont fait une folie dans Israël, et qu’ils ont commis l’adultère avec les femmes de leurs amis, et qu’ils ont dit faussement en mon nom ce que je ne leur ai pas commandé; c’est moi qui suis le juge et le témoin, dit le Seigneur.

24 And concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite thou shalt speak, saying,

Et tu diras à Séméias, le Néhélamite:

25 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thine own name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying,

Voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées, Dieu d’Israël: Parce que tu as envoyé des lettres en ton nom à tout le peuple qui est dans Jérusalem et à Sophonias, fils de Maasias et prêtre, et à tous les prêtres, disant:

26 The LORD hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should be officers in the house of the LORD, for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in the stocks and in shackles.

Le Seigneur t’a établi prêtre à la place du pontife Joïada, afin que tu sois chef dans la maison du Seigneur, ayant autorité sur tout, homme saisi d’une fureur prophétique, et prophétisant, afin que tu le mettes dans les fers et dans la prison.

27 Now therefore, why hast thou not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth, which maketh himself a prophet to you,

Et maintenant pourquoi n’as-lu pas repris Jérémie, l’Anathothite, qui vous prophétise?

28 forasmuch as he hath sent unto us in Babylon, saying, [The captivity] is long: build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them?

Parce qu’outre cela, il a envoyé vers nous à Babylone, disant: C’est long; bâtissez des maisons et habitez-les, et plantez des jardins, et mangez-en les fruits.

29 And Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.

Sophonias le prêtre lut donc cette lettre aux oreilles de Jérémie le prophète.

30 Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying,

Et la parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Jérémie, disant:

31 Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus saith the LORD concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because that Shemaiah hath prophesied unto you, and I sent him not, and he hath caused you to trust in a lie;

Envoie vers tous les fils de la transmigration, disant: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur à Séméias, le Néhélamite: Parce que Séméias a prophétisé, et que moi je ne l’ai pas envoyé; et qu’il vous a fait vous confier dans un mensonge;

32 therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed; he shall not have a man to dwell among this people, neither shall he behold the good that I will do unto my people, saith the LORD: because he hath spoken rebellion against the LORD.

C’est pour cela que voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Voilà que moi je visiterai Séméias le Néhélamite et sa race; il n’aura pas d’homme de sa race assis au milieu de ce peuple, et il ne verra pas le bien que moi je ferai à mon peuple, dit le Seigneur, parce qu’il a proféré des paroles de prévarication contre le Seigneur.
