Isaiah 10
1 Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and to the writers that write perverseness:
Malheur à ceux qui prononcent des sentences iniques, et aux écrivains qui transcrivent l'injustice,
2 to turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right of the poor of my people, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey!
pour débouter du jugement les pauvres, et ravir leur droit aux malheureux de mon peuple, pour faire des veuves leur proie, et des orphelins leur pillage!
3 And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?
Et que ferez-vous au jour du châtiment et du ravage qui arrive du lointain? Vers qui fuirez-vous pour trouver secours, et où laisserez-vous votre magnificence?
4 They shall only bow down under the prisoners, and shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
Celui qui ne fléchira pas sous le faix parmi les captifs, tombera parmi les morts. Malgré tout cela, sa colère ne cesse pas, et sa main est toujours étendue.
5 Ho Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, the staff in whose hand is mine indignation!
Malheur à l'Assyrien! Il est la verge et le bâton de ma colère, et mes vengeances sont entre ses mains.
6 I will send him against a profane nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.
Contre une nation sacrilège je l'ai envoyé, et contre le peuple objet de mon courroux je lui ai donné mission, pour faire du pillage et enlever du butin, et pour le fouler aux pieds comme la boue des rues.
7 Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few.
Mais telle n'est point son idée, telle n'est point la pensée de son cœur; mais en son âme il veut détruire et exterminer les peuples en foule.
8 For he saith, Are not my princes all of them kings?
Car il dit: « Mes princes ne sont-ils pas tous autant de rois?
9 Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus?
N'en fut-il pas de Calno comme de Carchemis, de Hamath comme d'Arpad, de Samarie comme de Damas?
10 As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;
De même que ma main a atteint les empires des idoles, dont les images étaient supérieures à celles de Jérusalem et de Samarie,
11 shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?
ne saurai-je pas traiter Jérusalem et ses images, comme j'ai traité Samarie et ses idoles? »
12 Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.
Mais, quand le Seigneur aura achevé toute son œuvre sur la montagne de Sion et à Jérusalem, je sévirai contre le fruit du cœur orgueilleux du Roi d'Assyrie, et contre l'arrogance de ses yeux hautains.
13 For he hath said, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and I have brought down as a valiant man them that sit [on thrones]:
Car il dit: « Par la force de mon bras je l'ai fait, et par ma sagesse, car je suis intelligent; j'ai déplacé les bornes des peuples, et pillé leurs trésors, et comme un héros j'en ai précipité de leurs trônes,
14 and my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples; and as one gathereth eggs that are forsaken, have I gathered all the earth: and there was none that moved the wing, or that opened the mouth, or chirped.
et ma main s'empara des biens des peuples, comme d'un nid; comme on ramasse des œufs abandonnés, moi j'ai ramassé toute la terre, et il n'y en eut pas un qui remuât l'aile, et ouvrît la bouche et jetât un cri! »
15 Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? as if a rod should shake them that lift it up, or as if a staff should lift up [him that is] not wood.
La cognée est-elle insolente envers le bûcheron qui se sert d'elle, et la scie, superbe envers celui qui la manie, comme si la verge faisait mouvoir celui qui la lève, comme si le bâton soulevait le bras?
16 Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory there shall be kindled a burning like the burning of fire.
C'est pourquoi le Seigneur, le Seigneur des armées, parmi ses guerriers bien nourris enverra le dépérissement, et au milieu de sa magnificence s'allumera un incendie, comme un incendie de feu,
17 And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day.
et la Lumière d'Israël deviendra un feu, et son Saint, une flamme qui embrasera et dévorera ses ronces et ses épines en un jour.
18 And he shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and it shall be as when a standardbearer fainteth.
Et il détruira la magnificence de sa forêt et de ses campagnes, corps et âme, et il en sera comme d'un malade qui dépérit,
19 And the remnant of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them.
et le reste des arbres de sa forêt pourra être compté, et un enfant en écrirait le nombre.
20 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and they that are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
Et en ce jour-là, le reste d'Israël et les survivants de la maison de Jacob cesseront de prendre pour appui leur oppresseur, et ils s'appuieront sur l'Éternel, le Saint d'Israël, avec confiance.
21 A remnant shall return, [even] the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.
Le reste reviendra, le reste de Jacob, au Dieu tout-puissant.
22 For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, [only] a remnant of them shall return: a consumption [is] determined, overflowing with righteousness.
Car ton peuple, ô Israël, fût-il comme le sable de la mer, un reste [seulement] reviendra à lui; l'extermination est décidée, qui amènera les flots de la justice.
23 For a consummation, and that determined, shall the Lord, the LORD of hosts, make in the midst of all the earth.
Car le Seigneur, l'Éternel des armées, exécutera la destruction et le décret dans le sein de tout le pays.
24 Therefore thus saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts, O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: though he smite thee with the rod, and lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.
C'est pourquoi, ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel des armées: O mon peuple, qui habites en Sion, ne crains point l'Assyrien! De la verge il t'a battu, et il a levé son bâton sur toi à l'instar de l'Egypte.
25 For yet a very little while, and the indignation shall be accomplished, and mine anger, in their destruction.
Car, encore quelque temps, et le courroux cessera, et ma colère entreprendra leur ruine.
26 And the LORD of hosts shall stir up against him a scourge, as in the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb: and his rod shall be over the sea, and he shall lift it up after the manner of Egypt.
Alors l'Éternel des armées brandira sur lui le fouet, comme Il battit Madian au rocher d'Horeb, et comme de son bâton Il frappa la mer; et Il le lèvera ainsi qu'en Egypte.
27 And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall depart from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.
Et en ce jour-là son fardeau sera ôté de ton épaule, et son joug de ton col; et la graisse fera sauter le joug.
28 He is come to Aiath, he is passed through Migron; at Michmash he layeth up his baggage:
Il arrive à Ajath, traverse Migron, à Michmas il laisse ses bagages;
29 they are gone over the pass; they have taken up their lodging at Geba: Ramah trembleth; Gibeah of Saul is fled.
ils passent le défilé; Géba est l'étape où ils couchent; Rama tremble; Gibea, ville de Saül, est en fuite.
30 Cry aloud with thy voice, O daughter of Gallim! hearken, O Laishah! O thou poor Anathoth!
Pousse des cris aigus, fille de Gallim! prête l'oreille du côté de Laïs, pauvre Anathoth!
31 Madmenah is a fugitive; the inhabitants of Gebim gather themselves to flee.
Madmène est en fuite, et les habitants de Gébim fugitifs.
32 This very day shall he halt at Nob: he shaketh his hand at the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.
Encore ce jour d'arrêt à Nob, et il agite sa main contre la montagne de la fille de Sion, la colline de Jérusalem.
33 Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, shall lop the boughs with terror: and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the lofty shall be brought low.
Et voici, le Seigneur, l'Éternel des armées, abat les rameaux avec épouvante; et ceux qui s'élèvent en hauteur sont coupés, et les superbes humiliés;
34 And he shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.
et l'épaisseur de la forêt est frappée avec le fer, et le Liban succombe sous le Puissant.
