Genesis 38
1 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.
Et il arriva dans ce temps-là que Juda alla se fixer plus bas que ses frères, et se tourna vers un homme d'Adullam nommé Hirah.
2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua; and he took her, and went in unto her.
Et là Juda vit la fille d'un Cananéen nommé Suah, et il l'épousa, et habita avec elle.
3 And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.
Et elle devint enceinte et enfanta un fils, qu'il appela du nom de Ger.
4 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.
Et elle devint encore enceinte et enfanta un fils qu'elle appela du nom d'Onan.
5 And she yet again bare a son, and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.
Et derechef elle enfanta un fils qu'elle appela du nom de Sélah; or Juda était à Chesib, quand elle l'enfanta.
6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.
Et Juda choisit une femme à Ger, son premier-né, et Thamar était son nom.
7 And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.
Et Ger, premier-né de Juda, était méchant aux yeux de l'Éternel, et l'Éternel le fit mourir.
8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and perform the duty of an husband’s brother unto her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
Alors Juda dit à Onan: Approche-toi de la femme de ton frère, et remplis à son égard le devoir du beau-frère, et suscite une postérité à ton frère.
9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother.
Mais Onan savait que cette postérité ne serait pas pour lui; et lorsqu'il s'approchait de la femme de son frère, il polluait le sol, afin de ne pas donner de postérité à son frère.
10 And the thing which he did was evil in the sight of the LORD: and he slew him also.
Et le procédé d'Onan déplut à l'Éternel qui le fit aussi mourir.
11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow in thy father’s house, till Shelah my son be grown up: for he said, Lest he also die, like his brethren. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.
Alors Juda dit à Thamar, sa bru: Demeure veuve dans la maison de ton père, jusqu'à ce que Sélah, mon fils, soit adulte. Car il pensait empêcher que celui-ci ne mourût comme ses frères. Thamar s'en alla donc, et elle demeura dans la maison de son père.
12 And in process of time Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
Et il se passa longtemps, et la fille de Suah, femme de Juda, mourut; et lorsque Juda fut consolé, il monta à Thimna vers les tondeurs de ses brebis, lui et Hirah d'Adullam, son ami.
13 And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold, thy father in law goeth up to Timnah to shear his sheep.
Et avis en fut donné à Thamar en ces termes: Voilà que ton beau-père monte à Thimna pour la tonte de ses brebis.
14 And she put off from her the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is by the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she was not given unto him to wife.
Alors elle ôta ses habits de veuve, et se couvrit du voile, et ainsi enveloppée elle s'assit à la porte d'Enaïm qui est sur la route de Thimna. Car elle voyait que Sélah était adulte et qu'on ne la mariait point avec lui.
15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; for she had covered her face.
Et Juda la vit et la prit pour une prostituée, parce qu'elle avait caché son visage.
16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee: for he knew not that she was his daughter in law. And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?
Et tirant de côté il l'accosta sur le chemin et lui dit: Allons! livre-toi, je veux m'approcher de toi. Car il ignorait que ce fût sa bru.
17 And he said, I will send thee a kid of the goats from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?
Et elle dit: Que me donneras-tu pour ton approche? Et il dit: Je t'enverrai un chevreau de mon troupeau. Et elle dit: A condition que tu me donnes un gage en attendant ton envoi.
18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet and thy cord, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave them to her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.
Et il dit: Quel gage me faut-il te donner? Et elle dit: Ton sceau et ton cordon et le bâton que tu as à la main. Alors il lui remit ces objets, et il s'approcha d'elle, et elle devint enceinte de lui.
19 And she arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
Alors elle se leva et s'en alla, et ôta son voile et reprit son costume de veuve.
20 And Judah sent the kid of the goats by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found her not.
Et Juda envoya le chevreau par son ami d'Adullam, afin de retirer le gage des mains de la femme; mais il ne la trouva point.
21 Then he asked the men of her place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was at Enaim by the way side? And they said, There hath been no harlot here.
Et il interrogea les gens du lieu où elle était, disant: Où est cette courtisane qui était à Enaïm sur la route? Et ils répondirent: Il n'y a pas eu ici de courtisane.
22 And he returned to Judah, and said, I have not found her; and also the men of the place said, There hath been no harlot here.
Et il retourna auprès de Juda et dit: Je ne l'ai point trouvée et même les gens du lieu m'ont dit: Il n'y a pas eu ici de courtisane.
23 And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be put to shame: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.
Alors Juda dit: Qu'elle garde! craignons de nous faire honnir. Ah bah! j'ai envoyé ce chevreau; et tu ne l'as pas trouvée!
24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and moreover, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.
Et il arriva environ trois mois après que Juda reçut cet avis: Thamar, ta bru, s'est prostituée, et même la voilà enceinte ensuite de sa prostitution. Alors Juda dit: Amenez-la dehors et qu'elle soit brûlée!
25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and the cords, and the staff.
Comme on l'amenait, elle dépêcha auprès de son beau-père en lui faisant dire: C'est de l'homme auquel sont ces objets que je suis enceinte; et ajoutant: Reconnais donc à qui est ce sceau, ce cordon et ce bâton!
26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She is more righteous than I; forasmuch as I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.
Alors Juda les reconnut, et dit: Elle est plus innocente que moi, parce que je ne l'ai pas donnée à mon fils Sélah. Et dès lors il ne la connut plus.
27 And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.
Et à l'époque où elle devait accoucher, voici, elle portait deux jumeaux dans son sein.
28 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that one put out a hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.
Et pendant l'enfantement l'un des deux présenta la main, et la sage-femme la prit et y attacha un fil de pourpre en disant: Celui-ci a paru le premier.
29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, Wherefore hast thou made a breach for thyself? therefore his name was called Perez.
Et celui-ci ayant retiré sa main, son frère parut, et elle dit: Comme tu t'es ouvert la brèche! Et on l'appela du nom de Pérets (ouverture de brèche).
30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zerah.
Et ensuite parut son frère qui avait à la main le fil de pourpre, et on l'appela du nom de Zérah (point du jour).
