Genesis 3
1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of any tree of the garden?
Mais le serpent était le plus rusé de tous les animaux de la terre qu’avait faits le Seigneur. Il dit à la femme: Pourquoi Dieu vous a-t-il commandé de ne pas manger du fruit de tous les arbres du paradis?
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat:
La femme lui répondit: Nous mangeons du fruit des arbres qui sont dans le paradis:
3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
Mais pour le fruit de l’arbre qui est au milieu du paradis, Dieu nous a commandé de n’en point manger, et de n’y point toucher, de peur que nous ne mourions.
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
Mais le serpent dit à la femme: Point du tout, vous ne mourrez pas de mort.
5 for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil.
Car Dieu sait qu’en quelque jour que ce soit que vous en mangiez, vos yeux s’ouvriront; et vous serez comme des dieux, sachant le bien et le mal.
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat; and she gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat.
La femme donc vit que le fruit de l’arbre était bon à manger, beau à voir et d’un aspect qui excitait le désir; elle en prit, en mangea et en donna à son mari, qui en mangea.
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
En effet leurs yeux s’ouvrirent; et lorsqu’ils eurent connu qu’ils étaient nus, ils entrelacèrent des feuilles de figuier, et s’en firent des ceintures.
8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
Et lorsqu’ils eurent entendu la voix du Seigneur Dieu qui se promenait dans le paradis, à la brise du soir, Adam et sa femme se cachèrent de la face du Seigneur Dieu au milieu des arbres du paradis.
9 And the LORD God called unto the man, and said unto him, Where art thou?
Mais le Seigneur Dieu appela Adam, et lui dit: Où es-tu?
10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
Adam répondit: J’ai entendu votre voix dans le paradis; et j’ai eu peur, parce que j’étais nu, et je me suis caché.
11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
Dieu lui dit: Mais qui t’a appris que tu étais nu, si ce n’est que tu as mangé du fruit de l’arbre dont je t’avais défendu de manger?
12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
Et Adam répondit: La femme que vous m’avez donnée pour compagne m’a présenté du fruit de l’arbre, et j’en ai mangé.
13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
Alors le Seigneur Dieu dit à la femme: Pourquoi as-tu fait cela? Elle répondit: Le serpent m’a trompée, et j’ai mangé.
14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, cursed art thou above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
Le Seigneur Dieu dit au serpent: Parce que tu as fait cela, tu es maudit entre tous les animaux de la terre: tu ramperas sur ton ventre, et tu mangeras de la terre tous les jours de ta vie.
15 and I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed: it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Je mettrai des inimitiés entre toi et la femme, entre ta postérité et sa postérité: Elle te brisera la tête, et toi, tu lui tendras des embûches au talon.
16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
Il dit encore à la femme: Je multiplierai tes fatigues et tes grossesses; c’est dans la douleur que tu mettras au monde des enfants; tu seras sous la puissance de ton mari, et lui te dominera.
17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in toil shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
Mais à Adam, il dit: Puisque tu as écouté la voix de ta femme, et que tu as mangé du fruit dont je t’avais défendu de manger, maudite sera la terre en ton œuvre; et c’est avec des labeurs que tu en tireras ta nourriture durant tous les jours de ta vie.
18 thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
Elle te produira des épines et des chardons: et tu mangeras l’herbe de la terre
19 in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
C’est à la sueur de ton front que tu te nourriras de pain, jusqu’à ce que tu retournes à la terre, d’où tu as été tiré: puisque tu es poussière, tu retourneras à la poussière.
20 And the man called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
Adam donna à sa femme le nom d’Ève, parce qu’elle était la mère de tous les vivants.
21 And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife coats of skins, and clothed them.
Le Seigneur Dieu fit aussi à Adam et à sa femme des tuniques de peau, et les en revêtit.
22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
Et il dit: Voilà qu’Adam est devenu comme l’un de nous, sachant le bien et le mal: maintenant donc, qu’il n’avance pas sa main; qu’il ne prenne pas non plus du fruit de l’arbre de vie; qu’il n’en mange point, et qu’il ne vive point éternellement.
23 therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
Et le Seigneur Dieu le renvoya du jardin de délices, afin qu’il labourât la terre, de laquelle il fut tiré.
24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden the Cherubim, and the flame of a sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
Il renvoya donc Adam, et il plaça à l’entrée du jardin de délices les Chérubins avec un glaive flamboyant qu’ils brandissaient, pour garder la voie de l’arbre de la vie.
