Ecclesiastes 4
1 Then I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold, the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power, but they had no comforter.
૧ત્યારબાદ મેં પાછા ફરીને વિચાર કર્યો, અને પૃથ્વી પર જે જુલમ કરવામાં આવે છે. તે સર્વ મેં નિહાળ્યા. જુલમ સહન કરનારાઓનાં આંસુ પડતાં હતાં. પણ તેમને સાંત્વના આપનાર કોઈ નહોતું, તેઓના પર ત્રાસ કરનારાઓ શક્તિશાળી હતાં.
2 Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive;
૨તેથી મને લાગ્યું કે જેઓ હજી જીવતાં છે તેઓ કરતાં જેઓ મૃત્યુ પામ્યા છે તેઓ વધારે સુખી છે
3 yea, better than them both [did I esteem] him which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
૩વળી તે બન્ને કરતાં જેઓ હજી જન્મ્યા જ નથી અને જેઓએ પૃથ્વી પર થતાં ખરાબ કૃત્યો જોયા નથી તેઓ વધારે સુખી છે.
4 Then I saw all labour and every skilful work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
૪વળી મેં સઘળી મહેનત અને ચતુરાઈનું દરેક કામ જોયું અને એ પણ જોયું કે તેના લીધે માણસ ઉપર તેનો પડોશી ઈર્ષ્યા કરે છે. એ પણ વ્યર્થ તથા પવનથી મુઠી ભરવા જેવું છે.
5 The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.
૫મૂર્ખ કામ કરતો નથી, અને પોતાની જાત પર બરબાદી લાવે છે.
6 Better is an handful with quietness, than two handfuls with labour and striving after wind.
૬અતિ પરિશ્રમ કરવા દ્વારા પવનમાં ફાંફાં મારીને પુષ્કળ કમાણી કરવી તેના કરતાં શાંતિસહિત થોડું મળે તે વધારે સારું છે.
7 Then I returned and saw vanity under the sun.
૭પછી હું પાછો ફર્યો અને મેં પૃથ્વી ઉપર વ્યર્થતા જોઈ.
8 There is one that is alone, and he hath not a second; yea, he hath neither son nor brother; yet is there no end of all his labour, neither are his eyes satisfied with riches. For whom then, [saith he], do I labour, and deprive my soul of good? This also is vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.
૮જો માણસ એકલો હોય અને તેને બીજું કોઈ સગુંવહાલું ન હોય, તેને દીકરો પણ ન હોય કે ભાઈ પણ ન હોય છતાંય તેના પરિશ્રમનો પાર હોતો નથી. અને દ્રવ્યથી તેને સંતોષ નથી તે વિચારતો નથી કે “હું આ પરિશ્રમ કોના માટે કરું છું” અને મારા જીવને દુઃખી કરું છું? આ પણ વ્યર્થતા છે હા, મોટું દુઃખ છે.
9 Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.
૯એક કરતાં બે ભલા; કેમ કે તેઓએ કરેલી મહેનતનું ફળ તેઓને મળે છે.
10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth, and hath not another to lift him up.
૧૦જો બેમાંથી એક પડે તો બીજો તેને ઉઠાડશે. પરંતુ માણસ એકલો હોય, અને તેની પડતી થાય તો તેને મદદ કરનાર કોઈ જ ન હોય તો તેને અફસોસ છે.
11 Again, if two lie together, then they have warmth: but how can one be warm [alone]?
૧૧જો બે જણા સાથે સૂઈ જાય તો તેઓને એક બીજાથી હૂંફ મળે છે. પણ એકલો માણસ હૂંફ કેવી રીતે મેળવી શકે?
12 And if a man prevail against him that is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
૧૨એકલા માણસને હરકોઈ હરાવે પણ બે જણ તેને જીતી શકે છે ત્રેવડી વણેલી દોરી સહેલાઈથી તૂટતી નથી.
13 Better is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king, who knoweth not how to receive admonition any more.
૧૩કોઈ વૃદ્ધ અને મૂર્ખ રાજા કે જે કોઈની સલાહ સાંભળતો ન હોય તેના કરતાં ગરીબ પણ જ્ઞાની યુવાન સારો હોય છે.
14 For out of prison he came forth to be king; yea, even in his kingdom he was born poor.
૧૪કેમ કે જો તેના રાજ્યમાં દરિદ્રી જન્મ્યો હોય તોપણ તે જેલમાંથી મુકત થઈને રાજા થયો.
15 I saw all the living which walk under the sun, that they were with the youth, the second, that stood up in his stead.
૧૫પૃથ્વી પરના સર્વ મનુષ્યોને મેં જોયા તો તેઓ બધા પોતાની જગ્યાએ ઊભા થનાર પેલા બીજા યુવાનની સાથે હતા.
16 There was no end of all the people, even of all them over whom he was: yet they that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.
૧૬જે સર્વ લોકો ઉપર તે રાજા હતો તેઓનો પાર નહોતો તોપણ તેની પછીની પેઢીના લોકો તેનાથી ખુશ નહોતા. નિશ્ચે એ પણ વ્યર્થ અને પવનથી મુઠી ભરવા જેવું છે.
