Deuteronomy 20

1 When thou goest forth to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, [and] a people more than thou, thou shalt not be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

Lorsque tu sortiras pour la guerre contre tes ennemis, et que tu verras une cavalerie, des chars, et un corps d’armée ennemie plus considérable que celui que tu auras, tu ne les craindras point, parce que le Seigneur ton Dieu est avec toi, lui qui t’a retiré de l’Egypte.

2 And it shall be, when ye draw nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,

Or, le combat approchant, le prêtre se tiendra devant l’armée, et c’est ainsi qu’il parlera, au peuple:

3 and shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye draw nigh this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your heart faint; fear not, nor tremble, neither be ye affrighted at them;

Ecoute, Israël: c’est vous qui aujourd’hui engagez le combat contre vos ennemis; que votre cœur ne s’épouvante point, ne craignez point, ne reculez point, ne les redoutez point;

4 for the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

Parce que le Seigneur votre Dieu est au milieu de vous, et il combattra pour vous contre vos adversaires, pour vous délivrer du péril.

5 And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

Les chefs aussi crieront chacun à la tête de son corps, l’armée entendant: Quel est l’homme qui a bâti une maison neuve, et qui ne l’ait pas encore dédiée? qu’il s’en aille et retourne en sa maison, de peur qu’il ne meure à la guerre, et qu’un autre ne la dédie.

6 And what man is there that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not used the fruit thereof? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use the fruit thereof.

Quel est l’homme qui a planté une vigne, et qui n’a pas fait encore qu’elle fût commune, pour qu’il soit permis à tous d’en manger? qu’il s’en aille, et qu’il retourne en sa maison, de peur qu’il ne meure à la guerre, et qu’un autre homme ne fasse ce qu’il devait faire.

7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.

Quel est l’homme qui a été fiancé à une fille et qui ne l’a pas épousée? qu’il s’en aille et retourne en sa maison, de peur qu’il ne meure à la guerre, et qu’un autre homme ne l’épouse.

8 And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart melt as his heart.

Ces choses dites, ils ajouteront le reste, et ils diront au peuple: Quel est l’homme craintif et d’un cœur timide? qu’il s’en aille et retourne en sa maison, de peur qu’il ne jette la frayeur dans le cœur de ses frères, comme il est lui-même frappé de crainte.

9 And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall appoint captains of hosts at the head of the people.

Et lorsque les chefs de l’armée auront cessé de parler, chacun préparera ses bataillons à combattre.

10 When thou drawest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.

Si quelquefois tu t’approches pour assiéger une ville, tu lui offriras d’abord la paix.

11 And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall become tributary unto thee, and shall serve thee.

Si elle l’accepte et t’ouvre ses portes, tout le peuple qui est en elle sera sauvé, et te servira en te payant le tribut.

12 And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it:

Mais si elle ne veut point faire alliance, et qu’elle commence contre toi la guerre, tu l’assiégeras.

13 and when the LORD thy God delivereth it into thine hand, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:

Et lorsque le Seigneur ton Dieu l’aura livrée en ta main, tu frapperas tout ce qui est en elle du sexe masculin, du tranchant du glaive,

14 but the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take for a prey unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.

Hormis les femmes, les enfants, les bestiaux, et tout le reste qui sera dans la ville. Tu partageras tout le butin à l’armée, et tu mangeras les dépouilles de tes ennemis que le Seigneur ton Dieu t’aura données.

15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.

C’est ainsi que tu feras à toutes les cités qui sont très éloignées de toi, et qui ne sont pas de ces villes que tu vas posséder.

16 But of the cities of these peoples, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:

Mais quant à ces villes qui te seront données, tu ne laisseras vivre absolument personne,

17 but thou shalt utterly destroy them; the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee:

Mais tu tueras par le tranchant du glaive, savoir: l’Héthéen, l’Amorréhen, le Chananéen, le Phéréséen, l’Hévéen, et le Jébuséen, comme t’a ordonné le Seigneur ton Dieu;

18 that they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the LORD your God.

Afin qu’il ne vous apprennent pas à faire toutes ces abominations qu’ils ont commises eux-mêmes pour leurs dieux, et que vous ne péchiez pas contre le Seigneur votre Dieu.

19 When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by wielding an axe against them; for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged of thee?

Quand tu assiégeras une ville longtemps et que tu l’entoureras de circonvallations, afin de la réduire, tu ne couperas point les arbres du fruit desquels on peut se nourrir, et tu ne dois point ravager avec des cognées la contrée d’alentour; parce que c’est du bois et non pas des hommes, et qu’il ne peut accroître le nombre de ceux qui combattent contre toi.

20 Only the trees which thou knowest that they be not trees for meat, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it fall.

Mais si quelques-uns de ces arbres ne sont pas fruitiers, mais sauvages et propres à tous les autres usages, coupe-les, et construis-en des machines, jusqu’à ce que tu aies pris la ville qui combat contre toi.
