Daniel 1
1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
यहूदिया के राजा यहोइयाकिम के शासन के तीसरे वर्ष में, बाबेल के राजा नबूकदनेज्ज़र ने आकर येरूशलेम को घेर लिया.
2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god: and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
और प्रभु ने यहूदिया के राजा यहोइयाकिम को परमेश्वर के मंदिर के कुछ पात्रों सहित नबूकदनेज्ज़र के अधीन कर दिया. इन चीज़ों को वह शीनार देश में अपने देवता के मंदिर में ले आया और वह उन्हें अपने देवता के कोषागार में रख दिया.
3 And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in [certain] of the children of Israel, even of the seed royal and of the nobles;
तब राजा ने अपने दरबार के अधिकारियों के प्रधान ऐशपेनाज को आदेश दिया कि राजपरिवार और कुलीन वर्ग के कुछ इस्राएलियों को राजा की सेवा में लाया जाय—
4 youths in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability to stand in the king’s palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
ये ऐसे जवान हों, जिनमें किसी प्रकार का शारीरिक खोट न हो, सुंदर हों, हर प्रकार की बात सीखने की सामर्थ्य हो, अच्छे जानकार हों, तुरंत समझनेवाले हों, और राजा के महल में सेवा करने की योग्यता हो. राजा ने प्रधान को आदेश दिया कि इन्हें बाबेलवासियों की भाषा और साहित्य की शिक्षा दे.
5 And the king appointed for them a daily portion of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years; that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
राजा ने अपने स्वयं के भोजन पदार्थों में से उन्हें प्रतिदिन का भोजन और दाखमधु देने की आज्ञा दी. राजा ने यह भी कहा कि उन्हें तीन वर्ष तक प्रशिक्षित किया जाए, और उसके बाद उन्हें राजा के सेवा में लाया जाय.
6 Now among these were, of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
जो चुने गये थे, उनमें से कुछ यहूदाह के वंश के थे: दानिएल, हननियाह, मिषाएल तथा अज़रियाह.
7 And the prince of the eunuchs gave names unto them: unto Daniel he gave [the name of] Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, [of] Shadrach; and to Mishael, [of] Meshach; and to Azariah, [of] Abed-nego.
प्रधान अधिकारी ने उन्हें नये नाम दिये: दानिएल को बैलशत्सर, हननियाह को शद्रख, मिषाएल को मेशेख तथा अज़रियाह को अबेद-नगो.
8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
पर दानिएल ने यह निश्चय कर लिया कि वह शाही भोजन और दाखमधु सेवन करने के द्वारा स्वयं को अशुद्ध नहीं करेगा और इस प्रकार से अपने आपको अशुद्ध न करने के लिये उसने प्रधान अधिकारी से अनुमति मांगी.
9 Now God made Daniel to find favour and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.
परमेश्वर ने अधिकारी के मन में यह बात डाल दी कि वह दानिएल के प्रति कृपादृष्टि एवं दया दिखाये,
10 And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Darnel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the youths which are of your own age? so should ye endanger my head with the king.
पर अधिकारी ने दानिएल से कहा, “मुझे अपने प्रभु राजा का भय है, जिन्होंने तुम्हारे खाने-पीने की वस्तुओं का निर्धारण किया है. कहीं ऐसा न हो कि वह तुम्हें तुम्हारे उम्र के दूसरे जवानों से कमजोर देखे? और तब तुम्हारे कारण, राजा मुझे मार डाले.”
11 Then said Daniel to the steward, whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
तब दानिएल ने उस पहरेदार से कहा, जिसे प्रधान अधिकारी ने दानिएल, हननियाह, मिषाएल तथा अज़रियाह के देखभाल के लिए ठहराया था,
12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
“कृपा कर आप दस दिन तक अपने सेवकों को परखकर देखें: खाने के लिये हमें सिर्फ साग-पात और पीने के लिये सिर्फ पानी दिया जाए.
13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the youths that eat of the king’s meat; and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.
तब हमारे शरीर से उन जवानों की तुलना किया जाए, जो शाही भोजन खाते हैं, और उसके बाद आपको जैसा दिखे उसके अनुसार आप अपने सेवकों से व्यवहार करें.”
14 So he hearkened unto them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
पहरेदार ने उसकी बात मान ली और दस दिन तक उन्हें परखकर देखा.
15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths which did eat of the king’s meat.
दस दिन के बाद वे उन जवानों से ज्यादा स्वस्थ और हृष्ट-पुष्ट दिखे, जो शाही भोजन करते थे.
16 So the steward took away their meat, and the wine that they should drink, and gave them pulse.
इसलिये पहरेदार ने उनके लिए ठहराए उत्तम भोजन और दाखमधु को हटाकर उन्हें बदले में साग-पात देने लगा.
17 Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
इन चारों जवानों को परमेश्वर ने सब प्रकार के साहित्य और विद्या का ज्ञान और समझ दी. और दानिएल सब प्रकार के दर्शनों तथा स्वप्नों को भी समझ लेता था.
18 And at the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
तब जितने दिन बाद राजा ने उन जवानों को अपनी सेवा में लाने के लिये कहा था, उतने दिनों के पूरे होने पर प्रधान अधिकारी उन्हें नबूकदनेज्ज़र के सामने ले गया.
19 And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.
राजा ने सब जवानों से बातें की और उसकी नजर में दानिएल, हननियाह, मिषाएल और अज़रियाह के बराबर कोई अन्य जवान न ठहरा; इसलिये वे राजा की सेवा में चुन लिये गए.
20 And in every matter of wisdom and understanding, concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his realm.
बुद्धि और समझ के बारे में राजा ने उनसे जितने भी प्रश्न किए, वे राजा के सारे राज्य के सब ज्योतिषियों एवं तांत्रिकों से दस गुणा उत्तम पाये गए.
21 And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
और दानिएल राजा कोरेश के शासनकाल के पहले साल तक वहां सेवा करता रहा.
