2 Chronicles 32
1 After these things, and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fenced cities, and thought to win them for himself.
Après ces événements et ces preuves de zèle, Sennachérib, roi d’Assyrie, vint envahir Juda, assiégea les villes fortes et prétendit les forcer pour s’en emparer.
2 And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem,
Ezéchias, voyant que Sennachérib était venu avec l’intention d’attaquer Jérusalem,
3 he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city; and they helped him.
consulta ses chefs et ses héros sur l’idée de boucher les sources d’eau qui se trouvaient en dehors de la ville, et ils l’appuyèrent.
4 So there was gathered much people together, and they stopped all the fountains, and the brook that flowed through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water?
Alors ils se rassemblèrent en grand nombre et bouchèrent toutes les sources, ainsi que le torrent qui coulait dans le pays, en disant: "Pourquoi les rois d’Assyrie trouveraient-ils à leur arrivée quantité d’eau?"
5 And he took courage, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised it up to the towers, and the other wall without, and strengthened Millo [in] the city of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance.
Il s’enhardit et rebâtit toutes les brèches de la muraille; il suréleva les tours et l’autre muraille extérieure; il fortifia le Millo dans la cité de David et fabriqua un grand nombre d’armes de trait et des boucliers.
6 And he set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the broad place at the gate of the city, and spake comfortably to them, saying,
Il établit des chefs militaires à la tête du peuple, les assembla autour de lui sur la place à la porte de la ville et les encouragea en ces termes:
7 Be strong and of a good courage, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there is a greater with us than with him:
"Soyez forts et courageux, n’ayez crainte et ne vous laissez point effrayer par le roi d’Assyrie et toute la foule qui raccompagne, car il y a avec nous quelqu’un de plus grand qu’avec lui.
8 with him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
Avec lui est un bras de chair; avec nous est l’Eternel, notre Dieu, pour nous assister et combattre nos combats", et le peuple s’en rapporta aux paroles d’Ezéchias, roi de Juda.
9 After this did Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (now he was before Lachish, and all his power with him, ) unto Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,
Après cela Sennachérib, roi d’Assyrie, envoya ses serviteurs à Jérusalem, tandis qu’il était lui-même devant Lakhich avec toutes ses forces, vers Ezéchias, roi de Juda, et vers tous ceux de Juda qui se trouvaient à Jérusalem pour leur dire:
10 Thus saith Sennacherib king of Assyria, Whereon do ye trust, that ye abide the siege in Jerusalem?
"Ainsi parle Sennachérib, roi d’Assyrie: En quoi mettez-vous votre confiance pour rester ainsi bloqués dans Jérusalem?
11 Doth not Hezekiah persuade you, to give you over to die by famine and by thirst, saying, The LORD our God shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
Ne voyez-vous pas qu’Ezéchias vous abuse pour vous livrer à la mort par la famine et par la soif, quand il vous dit: L’Eternel, notre Dieu, nous sauvera de la main du roi d’Assyrie?
12 Hath not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and upon it shall ye burn incense?
N’Est-ce pas lui, Ezéchias, qui a fait disparaître ses hauts lieux et ses autels et qui a parlé en ces termes à Juda et à Jérusalem: Devant un seul autel vous vous prosternerez et ferez fumer l’encens?
13 Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands any ways able to deliver their land out of mine hand?
Ne savez-vous pas ce que j’ai fait, moi et mes pères, à tous les peuples des diverses contrées? Est-ce que les dieux des nations de ces contrées ont jamais pu soustraire leur pays à mon pouvoir?
14 Who was there among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand?
De tous les dieux de ces nations qu’ont anéanties mes pères, quel est celui qui a pu soustraire son peuple à mon pouvoir? Et votre Dieu pourrait vous arracher à ma domination!
15 Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you on this manner, neither believe ye him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?
Et maintenant, ne vous laissez pas abuser par Ezéchias ni séduire ainsi, ne croyez pas en lui, car aucun dieu d’aucune nation et royaume ne pourra soustraire son peuple à ma domination et à celle de mes pères, à plus forte raison votre Dieu ne pourra-t-il vous soustraire à mon pouvoir."
16 And his servants spake yet more against the LORD God, and against his servant Hezekiah.
Ses serviteurs continuèrent à déblatérer contre le Seigneur Dieu et contre Ezéchias, son serviteur.
17 He wrote also letters, to rail on the LORD, the God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of the lands which have not delivered their people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand.
Il avait écrit aussi des libelles injurieux pour l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, et s’exprimait sur lui en ces termes: "Tels les dieux des contrées qui n’ont pu soustraire leur peuple à mon pouvoir, ainsi le Dieu d’Ezéchias ne soustraira point son peuple à mon pouvoir."
18 And they cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language unto the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to affright them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city.
Ils s’adressaient à haute voix en judéen au peuple de Jérusalem qui était sur le rempart pour les effrayer et les troubler afin de s’emparer de la ville.
19 And they spake of the God of Jerusalem, as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men’s hands.
Ils parlaient du Dieu de Jérusalem comme des dieux des nations de la terre, œuvre des mains de l’homme.
20 And Hezekiah the king, and Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, prayed because of this, and cried to heaven.
Alors le roi Ezéchias et le prophète Isaïe, fils d’Amoç, se mirent à prier à ce sujet et ils implorèrent le Ciel.
21 And the LORD sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains, in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels slew him there with the sword.
L’Eternel envoya un ange, qui extermina tous les guerriers, princes et chefs, dans le camp du roi d’Assyrie, lequel s’en revint, plein de confusion, dans son pays. Il entra dans le temple de son dieu et là, il tomba sous le glaive de sa propre progéniture.
22 Thus the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all [other], and guided them on every side.
C’Est ainsi que l’Eternel sauva Ezéchias et les habitants de Jérusalem de la main de Sennachérib, roi d’Assyrie, et de la main de tous leurs ennemis et les protégea tout alentour.
23 And many brought gifts unto the LORD to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah: so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from thenceforth.
Puis, beaucoup apportèrent une offrande à l’Eternel à Jérusalem et des présents à Ezéchias, roi de Juda; et il fut élevé après cela aux yeux de tous les peuples.
24 In those days Hezekiah was sick even unto death: and he prayed unto the LORD; and he spake unto him, and gave him a sign.
En ce temps-là Ezéchias fut atteint d’une maladie mortelle. Il implora le Seigneur, qui lui parla et lui accorda un prodige.
25 But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
Mais Ezéchias n’agit pas comme il aurait dû en retour de cette faveur, car son cœur s’enorgueillit, et la colère divine fut excitée contre lui et contre Juda et Jérusalem.
26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.
Mais Ezéchias s’humilia dans son cœur orgueilleux, lui et les habitants de Jérusalem, et la colère de l’Eternel ne les atteignit pas du temps d’Ezéchias.
27 And Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour: and he provided him treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of goodly vessels;
Ezéchias eut des richesses et des honneurs en grande abondance; il se fit des trésors pour l’argent, l’or et les pierres précieuses, pour les aromates, les boucliers et tous les objets de prix,
28 storehouses also for the increase of corn and wine and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts, and flocks in folds.
des magasins pour les récoltes de blé, pour le moût et l’huile, des étables pour tous les animaux domestiques et des troupeaux pour les étables.
29 Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance: for God had given him very much substance.
Il se bâtit des villes, s’acquit du menu et du gros bétail en quantité, car Dieu lui avait donné des richesses très considérables.
30 This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper spring of the waters of Gihon, and brought them straight down on the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.
Ce fut Ezéchias qui boucha l’issue supérieure des eaux du Ghihôn et les dirigea par en bas du côté occidental vers la cité de David, et Ezéchias réussit dans toutes ses entreprises.
31 Howbeit in [the business of] the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent unto him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.
Pourtant, dans l’affaire des conseillers des princes de Babylone qui lui avaient envoyé une ambassade pour s’informer du prodige qui avait eu lieu dans le pays, Dieu l’abandonna afin de le mettre à l’épreuve et connaître tous les sentiments de son cœur.
32 Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his good deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
Pour les autres faits concernant Ezéchias et ses mérites, tout cela est consigné dans les prophéties d’Isaïe, fils d’Amoç et dans le livre des rois de Juda et d’Israël.
33 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent of the sepulchres of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
Ezéchias s’endormit avec ses pères; on l’ensevelit sur la montée des tombeaux de la famille de David, et des honneurs lui furent rendus à sa mort par tout Juda et par les habitants de Jérusalem. Il eut pour successeur son fils Manassé.
