1 Samuel 5
1 Now the Philistines had taken the ark of God, and they brought it from Eben-ezer unto Ashdod.
Or. les Philistins prirent l’arche de Dieu, et la transportèrent de la pierre du Secours à Azot.
2 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
Ainsi les Philistins prirent l’arche de Dieu, et ils la portèrent dans le temple de Dagon, et la placèrent auprès de Dagon.
3 And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
Et lorsque les Azotiens se furent levés le lendemain au point du jour, voilà que Dagon gisait renversé contre terre devant l’arche du Seigneur; et ils prirent Dagon, et le rétablirent à sa place.
4 And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands [lay] cut off upon the threshold; only [the stump of] Dagon was left to him.
Et de nouveau se levant de matin le jour suivant, ils trouvèrent Dagon gisant sur sa face contre terre, devant l’arche du Seigneur; mais la tête de Dagon et les deux paumes de ses mains coupées étaient sur le seuil de la porte,
5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon’s house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod, unto this day.
Et le tronc seul de Dagon était demeuré à sa place. Pour ce motif, les prêtres de Dagon et tous ceux qui entrent dans son temple, ne mettent pas le pied sur le seuil de la porte de Dagon à Azot jusqu’au présent jour.
6 But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with tumours, even Ashdod and the borders thereof.
Or, la main du Seigneur s’appesantit sur les Azotiens, et il les désola; et il frappa Azot et ses confins à la partie la plus secrète du corps. Et les villages et les champs au milieu de cette contrée fourmillèrent de rats qui naquirent, et la confusion causée par une grande mortalité régna dans la ville.
7 And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon as, and upon Dagon our god.
Cependant les hommes d’ Azot voyant une plaie de cette sorte, dirent: Que l’arche du Dieu d’Israël ne demeure pas chez nous, parce que sa main pèse sur nous et sur Dagon notre Dieu.
8 They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about [thither].
Et ils envoyèrent chercher, et rassemblèrent tous les satrapes des Philistins auprès d’eux, et dirent: Que ferons-nous de l’arche du Dieu d’Israël? Et les Géthéens répondirent: Que l’arche du Dieu d’Israël soit conduite autour du pays. Et ils conduisirent l’arche du Dieu d’Israël autour du pays.
9 And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great discomfiture: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and tumours brake out upon them.
Or, eux la conduisant ainsi, la main du Seigneur faisait dans chaque cité un très grand carnage, et il frappait les hommes de chacune de ces villes, depuis le petit jusqu’au grand, et leurs intestins sortant, se pourrissaient. Aussi les Géthéens tinrent conseil et se firent des sièges de peaux.
10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.
Ils envoyèrent donc l’arche de Dieu à Accaron. Et lorsque l’arche de Dieu fut venue à Accaron, les Accaronites s’écrièrent, disant: Ils nous ont amené l’arche du Dieu d’Israël, pour qu’elle nous tue, nous et notre peuple.
11 They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and they said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to its own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly discomfiture throughout all the city, the hand of God was very heavy there.
C’est pourquoi ils envoyèrent chercher et rassemblèrent tous les satrapes des Philistins, qui dirent: Renvoyez l’arche du Dieu d’Israël, et qu’elle retourne en son lieu, et qu’elle ne nous tue pas avec notre peuple.
12 And the men that died not were smitten with the tumours: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
Car la frayeur de la mort se répandait dans chaque ville, et la main de Dieu devenait extrêmement pesante; les hommes aussi, qui n’étaient pas morts, étaient frappés à la partie la plus secrète du corps; et le cri lamentable de chaque cité montait jusqu’au ciel.
