< 1 Samuel 17 >

1 Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and they were gathered together at Socoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.
Pea naʻe tānaki ʻe he kakai Filisitia ʻa ʻenau ngaahi tau ke tau, pea naʻe kātoa fakataha ʻakinautolu ʻi Soko ʻaia ʻoku ʻo Siuta, ʻonau ʻapitanga ʻi he vahaʻa ʻo Soko mo ʻAseka ʻi ʻEfesi-Tamemi.
2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched in the vale of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.
Pea kuo kātoa fakataha ʻa Saula mo e kau tangata ʻo ʻIsileli, ʻonau ʻapitanga ʻi he teleʻa ʻo Ila, ʻonau fakanofonofo ʻae tau ke tauʻi ʻae kakai Filisitia.
3 And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.
Pea naʻe tuʻu ʻae kau Filisitia ʻi he moʻunga ʻi he potu ʻe taha, pea tuʻu ʻa ʻIsileli ʻi he moʻunga ʻi he potu kehe: pea naʻe ai ʻae teleʻa ʻi hona vahaʻa.
4 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
Pea naʻe ʻalu atu mei he ʻapitanga ʻoe kau Filisitia ʻae tangata toʻa, ko Kolaiate ʻo Kati hono hingoa, ko e hanga ʻe hongofulu ma tolu hono māʻolunga.
5 And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was clad with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.
Pea naʻe ʻi hono ʻulu ʻae tatā palasa, pea naʻe kofu ia ʻaki ʻae kofu palasa: pea ko e fakatatau ʻo hono kofu ko e sikeli palasa ʻe nima afe.
6 And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a javelin of brass between his shoulders.
Pea naʻe kofuʻaki ʻae palasa ʻa hono vaʻe pea naʻe ʻi he vahaʻa ʻo hono uma ha sifa palasa.
7 And the staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; and his spear’s head [weighed] six hundred shekels of iron: and his shield-bearer went before him.
8 And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.
Pea naʻe tuʻu ia ʻo kalanga ki he ngaahi tau ʻo ʻIsileli, ʻo ne pehē kiate kinautolu, “Ko e hā kuo mou haʻu ke fakatoka ai ʻae tau? ʻIkai ko e Filisitia au, pea mo kimoutolu ko e kau tamaioʻeiki kia Saula? Fili ha tangata maʻamoutolu, pea tuku ke ʻalu hifo ia kiate au.
9 If he be able to fight with me, and kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.
Kapau ʻoku mafai ʻe ia ke ma tau mo au, pea ne tāmateʻi au, pehē te mau hoko ho hoʻomou kau tamaioʻeiki: pea kapau te u mālohi au kiate ia, ʻo tāmateʻi ia, te mou hoko ko ʻemau kau tamaioʻeiki, pea te mou tauhi ʻakimautolu.”
10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.
Pea naʻe pehē ʻe he tangata Filisitia, “ʻOku ou sipitau ki he ngaahi tau ʻo ʻIsileli he ʻaho ni; tuku mai ha tangata ke ma fai mo au.”
11 And when Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.
Pea ʻi he fanongo ʻa Saula mo ʻIsileli kotoa pē ki he ngaahi lea ko ia ʻae tangata Filisitia, naʻa nau ilifia mo manavahē lahi.
12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Beth-lehem-judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man was an old man in the days of Saul, stricken [in years] among men.
Pea ko Tevita ko e foha ia ʻoe tangata ʻo Efalata ʻo Petelihema, ko hono hingoa ko Sese; pea naʻe ʻiate ia ʻae foha ʻe toko valu: pea naʻe lau ʻae tangata ko ia mo e kau mātuʻa ʻi he ngaahi ʻaho ʻo Saula.
13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse had gone after Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
Pea naʻe muimui ʻia Saula ki he tau ʻae ngaahi foha ʻe toko tolu ʻo Sese naʻe tuʻukimuʻa; pea ko e hingoa ʻo hono foha ʻe toko tolu naʻe ʻalu ki he tau, ko Iliape ko e ʻuluaki ia, pea naʻe hoko mo ia ʻa ʻApinatapi, pea ko hono toko tolu ko Sama.
14 And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.
Pea ko e kimui ʻa Tevita: pea naʻe muimui ʻia Saula ʻae taʻokete ʻe toko tolu.
15 Now David went to and fro from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Beth-lehem.
Ka naʻe hiki ʻa Tevita meia Saula ke toe ʻalu ʻo tauhi ʻae fanga sipi ʻa ʻene tamai ʻi Petelihema.
16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
Pea naʻe ʻunuʻunu mai ʻae tangata Filisitia ʻi he pongipongi mo e efiafi, ʻo ne fakahā ia ʻi he ʻaho ʻe fāngofulu.
17 And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and carry [them] quickly to the camp to thy brethren;
Pea naʻe pehē ʻe Sese ki hono foha ko Tevita, “Ko eni, ke ke ʻave ki ho ngaahi taʻokete ʻae efa ʻe taha ʻoe uite tunu ni, mo e foʻi mā ʻe hongofulu, pea ke lele ki he ʻapitanga ki ho kāinga;
18 and bring these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.
Pea ke ʻave ʻae ngaahi siisi ʻe hongofulu ki he ʻeiki ʻo ʻenau toko afe, pea vakai, pe ʻoku fēfē ʻa ho ngaahi taʻokete, pea ke maʻu ʻenau popōaki.
19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the vale of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
Pea ko eni, ko Saula mo kinautolu, mo e kau tangata kotoa pē ʻo ʻIsileli, naʻa nau ʻi he teleʻa ʻo Ila, ke tau mo e kakai Filisitia.”
20 And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the place of the wagons, as the host which was going forth to the fight shouted for the battle.
Pea naʻe tuʻu hengihengi hake ʻa Tevita ʻi he ʻapongipongi, ʻo ne tuku ʻae fanga sipi ki he tangata ke leʻohi, pea naʻe teu, ʻo ʻalu ia, ʻo hangē ko e fekau ʻa Sese kiate ia; pea naʻe hoko atu ia ki he keli, ʻo feʻunga mo ʻene ʻalu atu ʻae tau ke tau, mo ʻenau kaila ki he tau.
21 And Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army.
He naʻe ʻosi hono fakaʻotu ʻae tau ʻe ʻIsileli mo e kakai Filisitia, pea naʻe fehāngaaki ʻae tau ki he tau.
22 And David left his baggage in the hand of the keeper of the baggage, and ran to the army, and came and saluted his brethren.
Pea naʻe tuku ʻe Tevita ʻae ngaahi meʻa naʻe tokonaki ki he nima ʻoe tangata leʻo koloa, ka ka lele ia ki he tau, pea naʻe hoko atu ia ʻo ne feʻiloaki mo hono ngaahi taʻokete.
23 And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.
Pea ʻi heʻenau kei talanoa, vakai, naʻe ʻalu hake ʻae fuʻu toʻa ko e tangata Filisitia ʻo Kati, ko Kolaiate hono hingoa, mei he ngaahi tau ʻoe kakai Filisitia, pea naʻe lea ia ʻo fakatatau ki heʻene ngaahi lea muʻa: pea naʻe fanongo ki ai ʻa Tevita.
24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.
Pea ʻi he mamata kiate ia ʻae kau tangata kotoa pē ʻo ʻIsileli, naʻa nau hola meiate ia, pea manavahē lahi.
25 And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel.
Pea naʻe pehē ʻe he kau tangata ʻo ʻIsileli, “Kuo mou mamata ki he tangata ni kuo ʻalu hake? Ko e moʻoni kuo ʻalu hake ia ke luki ki ʻIsileli: ka ʻe ʻilonga ʻae tangata ʻe tāmateʻi ia, ʻe fakakoloa ia ʻe he tuʻi ʻaki ʻae koloa lahi, pea ʻe foaki kiate ia hono ʻofefine, pea ʻe fakatauʻatāina ʻae fale ʻo ʻene tamai ʻi ʻIsileli.”
26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
Pea naʻe lea ʻa Tevita ki he kau tangata naʻe tuʻu ʻi ai, ʻo pehē, “Ko e hā ʻe fai ki he tangata ʻoku ne tāmateʻi ʻae Filisitia ko eni, pea ʻave ke mamaʻo ʻae manuki mei ʻIsileli? He ko hai ʻae Filisitia taʻekamu ni koeʻuhi ke tuʻu ia ʻo luki ki he ngaahi kautau ʻae ʻOtua moʻui?”
27 And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.
Pea naʻe lea ʻae kakai kiate ia ʻo fakatatau mo ia kuo lau, ʻo pehē, ʻE pehē pe hono fai ki he tangata te ne tāmateʻi ia.
28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why art thou come down? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.
Pea naʻe fanongo ʻa Iliape ko hono taʻokete ʻi heʻene lea ki he kau tangata; pea naʻe tupu ai ʻae ʻita ʻa Iliape kia Tevita, pea pehē ʻe ia, “Ko e hā naʻa ke omi ai ki heni? Pea kuo ke tuku kia hai ʻae fanga sipi siʻi na ʻi he toafa? ʻOku ou ʻilo hoʻo fielahi, mo e kovi lahi ʻo ho loto; he kuo ke haʻu ki heni koeʻuhi ke ke mamata ki he tau.”
29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?
Pea naʻe pehē ʻe Tevita, “Ko eni ko e hā kuo u fai? ʻIkai ʻoku ai hono ʻuhinga?”
30 And he turned away from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.
Pea ne tafoki ia meiate ia ʻo hanga ki he tokotaha, ʻo toe lea ʻo pehē pe: pea naʻe toe tala kiate ia, ʻo hangē ko e fuofua lea.
31 And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul; and he sent for him.
Pea ʻi heʻene ongoongo atu ʻae ngaahi lea naʻe lea ʻaki ʻe Tevita, naʻa nau fakahā ia ʻi he ʻao ʻo Saula: pea naʻa ne fekau ke ʻomi ia.
32 And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
Pea naʻe pehē ʻe Saula kia Tevita, “ʻOku ʻikai te ke mafai ke ʻalu ke tuʻu hake ʻo tauʻi ʻae Filisitia ni: he ko e tamasiʻi pe koe, ka ko e tangata tau pe ia talu ʻene kei siʻi.”
34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep; and when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock,
Ka naʻe pehē ʻe Tevita kia Saula, “Naʻe tauhi ʻe hoʻo tamaioʻeiki ʻae fanga sipi ʻa ʻene tamai, mo ʻene haʻu ʻae laione mo e pea, ʻo puke ʻo ʻave ʻae ʻuhikiʻi lami mei he fanga sipi:
35 I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
Pea naʻaku tuli ia ʻi tuaʻā, ʻo taaʻi ia, pea u fakamoʻui ia mei hono ngutu: pea ʻi heʻene tuʻu ki ʻolunga kiate au, naʻaku puke ia ʻi hono fakapau, pea tā ia ʻo tāmateʻi.
36 Thy servant smote both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
Naʻe tāmateʻi fakatouʻosi pe ʻe hoʻo tamaioʻeiki ʻae laione mo e pea: pea ko e Filisitia taʻekamu ni, ʻe tatau ia mo ha taha ʻo kinaua, ko e meʻa ʻi heʻene pole ki he ngaahi tau ʻae ʻOtua ʻo ʻIsileli.”
37 And David said, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD shall be with thee.
Pea naʻe lea foki ʻa Tevita ʻo pehē, “Ko Sihova ʻaia naʻa ne fakamoʻui au mei he pesipesi ʻoe laione, mo e pesipesi ʻoe pea, te ne fakamoʻui au mei he nima ʻoe Filisitia ni.” Pea naʻe pehē ʻe Saula kia Tevita, “ʻAlu, pea ke ʻiate koe ʻa Sihova.
38 And Saul clad David with his apparel, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head, and he clad him with a coat of mail.
Pea naʻe fakakofu tau ʻe Saula ʻa Tevita, “Pea ne ʻai ʻae tatā palasa ki hono ʻulu; pea ne ʻai kiate ia foki ʻae kofu palasa.
39 And David girded his sword upon his apparel, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
Pea naʻe nonoʻo ʻe Tevita ʻene heletā ʻituʻa ki he kofu tau, ʻo ne ʻahiʻahi ke ʻalu; he naʻe teʻeki ai te ne ʻahiʻahiʻi ia. Pea naʻe pehē ʻe Tevita kia Saula, “ʻOku ʻikai te u faʻa ʻalu mo e nāunau ni: he kuo ʻikai te u ʻahiʻahiʻi ia.” Pea naʻe vete ia ʻe Tevita ʻo ne tuku ia.
40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the shepherd’s bag which he had, even in his scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.
Pea naʻe toʻo ʻe ia hono tokotoko, ʻi hono nima, ʻo ne fili ʻae foʻi maka molemole ʻe nima mei he tafeʻanga, vai, ʻo ne ʻai ia ki he kato ʻae tauhi sipi naʻe ʻiate ia, ʻaia ko e kato siʻi; pea naʻe ʻi hono nima ʻene makatā: pea naʻe ʻunuʻunu atu ia ki he tangata Filisitia.
41 And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.
Pea naʻe haʻu ʻae tangata Filisitia ʻo ne ʻunuʻunu ke ofi kia Tevita: pea ko e tangata naʻe fua ʻae pā naʻe ʻalu muʻomuʻa ia ʻi hono ʻao.
42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and withal of a fair countenance.
Pea ʻi he fesiofaki ʻae tangata Filisitia, ʻo ne mamata kia Tevita, naʻa ne manuki kiate ia: he naʻe kei tamasiʻi pe ia, pea totototo, pea matamatalelei hono mata.
43 And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
Pea pehē ʻe he tangata Filisitia kia Tevita, “Ko e kulī au, kuo ke haʻu ai kiate au mo e ngaahi ʻakau?” Pea kapeʻi ʻe he tangata Filisitia ʻa Tevita ʻi hono ngaahi ʻotua.
44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.
Pea pehē ʻe he tangata Filisitia kia Tevita, “Haʻu kiate au, pea te u ʻatu ho kakano ki he fanga manu ʻoe ʻatā, pea ki he fanga manu ʻoe vao.”
45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a javelin: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, which thou hast defied.
Pea pehē ʻe Tevita ki he tangata Filisitia, “ʻOku ke haʻu kiate au ʻaki ʻae heletā, mo e tao, pea mo e pā: ka ʻoku ou ʻalu atu kiate koe ʻi he huafa ʻo Sihova ʻoe ngaahi kautau, ko e ʻOtua ʻoe ngaahi tau ʻa ʻIsileli, ʻaia kuo ke polepole ki ai.
46 This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from off thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel:
‌ʻE tuku koe ʻe Sihova he ʻaho ni ki hoku nima; pea te u taaʻi koe ʻo toʻo ho ʻulu meiate koe; pea te u foaki ʻae ngaahi ʻangaʻanga ʻoe tau ʻae kakai Filisitia he ʻaho ni ki he fanga manu ʻoe ʻatā, pea ki he fanga manu kaivao ʻoe fonua, koeʻuhi ke hoko ʻo ʻilo ʻe māmani kotoa pē, ʻoku ai ha ʻOtua ʻo ʻIsileli.
47 and that all this assembly may know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hand.
Pea ʻe hoko ʻo ʻilo ʻe he fakataha ni kotoa pē, ʻoku ʻikai fakamoʻui ʻe Sihova ʻaki ʻae heletā mo e tao; he ʻoku ʻa Sihova ʻae tau, pea te ne tuku ʻakimoutolu ki homau nima.”
48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
Pea naʻe hoko ʻo pehē, ʻi he tuʻu hake ʻae tangata Filisitia, pea haʻu ke ʻunuʻunu mai ke fakafetaulaki kia Tevita, naʻe fai vave ʻa Tevita ʻo lele atu ki he fuʻu tau ke fakafetaulaki atu ki he Filisitia.
49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead; and the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell upon his face to the earth.
Pea naʻe ala ʻe Tevita hono nima ki heʻene kato, ʻo ne toʻo mei ai ʻae foʻi maka, ʻo ne makataaʻi ia, ʻo ne taaʻi ʻae Filisitia ʻi hono foʻi laʻē, pea naʻe ngalo hifo ʻae maka ʻi hono ʻulu; pea ne tō ʻo tuʻu hono mata ki he kelekele.
50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.
51 Then David ran, and stood over the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.
Pea ko ia naʻe lele ai ʻa Tevita ʻo tuʻu ki he tangata Filisitia, ʻo ne puke ʻene heletā ʻaʻana, ʻo unuhi ia mei hono ʻaiʻanga, ʻo tāmateʻi ia ʻo ne tutuʻu ʻaki ia ʻa hono ʻulu. Pea ʻi he mamata ʻae kau Filisitia kuo mate honau toʻa, naʻa nau hola.
52 And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou comest to Gai, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.
53 And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their camp.
Pea naʻe liu mai ʻae fānau ʻa ʻIsileli mei heʻenau tuli ki he kakai Filisitia, ʻonau maumauʻi honau ngaahi fale ʻapitanga.
54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.
Pea naʻe toʻo ʻe Tevita ʻae ʻulu ʻoe tangata Filisitia, ʻo ne ʻomi ia ki Selūsalema; ka naʻa ne ʻai ʻene mahafutau ki hono fale fehikitaki.
55 And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.
Pea ʻi he mamata ʻa Saula ki he ʻalu atu ʻa Tevita ke tauʻi ʻae tangata Filisitia, naʻe pehē ʻe ia kia ʻApina ko e ʻeiki ʻo ʻene tau, ʻApina, “Ko e foha ʻo hai ʻae tamasiʻi ni?” Pea pehē ʻe ʻApina, “Hangē ʻoku moʻui ho laumālie, ʻE tuʻi, ʻoku ʻikai te u ʻiloa.”
56 And the king said, Inquire thou whose son the stripling is.
Pea pehē ʻe he tuʻi, “Ke ke fehuʻi koe, pe ko e foha ʻo hai ʻae tangata siʻi ni.”
57 And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
Pea ʻi he liu mai ʻa Tevita mei he tāmateʻi ʻoe tangata Filisitia, naʻe maʻu ia ʻe ʻApina, ʻo ne ʻomi ia ki he ʻao ʻo Saula mo e ʻulu ʻoe Filisitia naʻe ʻi hono nima.
58 And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Beth-lehemite.
Pea naʻe pehē ʻe Saula kiate ia, “Ko e foha koe ʻo hai?” Pea naʻe pehēange ʻe Tevita, “Ko e foha [au ]ʻo hoʻo tamaioʻeiki ko Sese ko e tangata Petelihema.”
