< 1 Peter 4 >
1 Forasmuch then as Christ suffered in the flesh, arm ye yourselves also with the same mind; for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
Therefore, since Christ has suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same mentality, because whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,
2 that ye no longer should live the rest of your time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
so as to live his remaining time in the flesh no longer for the evil desires of men, but for the will of God.
3 For the time past may suffice to have wrought the desire of the Gentiles, and to have walked in lasciviousness, lusts, winebibbings, revellings, carousings, and abominable idolatries:
For we have spent enough of our lives doing what the Gentiles like to do, walking in sensual indulgences, evil desires, excesses of wine, revelries, drinking bouts, and illicit idolatries.
4 wherein they think it strange that ye run not with [them] into the same excess of riot, speaking evil of [you]:
They are surprised when you do not run with them into the same flood of debauchery, so they revile you.
5 who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
But they will give an account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
6 For unto this end was the gospel preached even to the dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to the dead, so that, though they have been judged in the flesh as men are, they might live in the spirit as God does.
7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore of sound mind, and be sober unto prayer:
The end of all things has drawn near. Therefore be alert and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.
8 above all things being fervent in your love among yourselves; for love covereth a multitude of sins:
Above all, maintain a deep love for one another, because love will cover a multitude of sins.
9 using hospitality one to another without murmuring:
Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.
10 according as each hath received a gift, ministering it among yourselves, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God;
As each of you has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
11 if any man speaketh, [speaking] as it were oracles of God; if any man ministereth, [ministering] as of the strength which God supplieth: that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, whose is the glory and the dominion for ever and ever. Amen. (aiōn )
If anyone speaks, he should do so as one who speaks the oracles of God; if anyone serves, he should do so as one who serves from strength as God supplies it, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. (aiōn )
12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial among you, which cometh upon you to prove you, as though a strange thing happened unto you:
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial that has come upon you to test you, as though a strange thing were happening to you.
13 but insomuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings, rejoice; that at the revelation of his glory also ye may rejoice with exceeding joy.
But insofar as you share in the sufferings of Christ, rejoice, so that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.
14 If ye are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed [are ye]; because the [Spirit] of glory and the Spirit of God resteth upon you.
If you are reproached for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part he is blasphemed, but on your part he is glorified.
15 For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evil-doer, or as a meddler in other men’s matters:
None of you should suffer as a murderer, thief, evildoer, or meddler,
16 but if [a man suffer] as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this name.
but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he should not be ashamed, but should glorify God in this matter.
17 For the time [is come] for judgment to begin at the house of God: and if [it begin] first at us, what [shall be] the end of them that obey not the gospel of God?
For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God, and if it begins first with us, what will be the outcome for those who are disobedient to the gospel of God?
18 And if the righteous is scarcely saved, where shall the ungodly and sinner appear?
And, “If the righteous man is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly man and sinner?”
19 Wherefore let them also that suffer according to the will of God commit their souls in well-doing unto a faithful Creator.
Therefore, those who suffer according to the will of God should entrust their souls to him as their faithful Creator while doing what is good.
