1 Chronicles 17
1 And it came to pass, when David dwelt in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD [dwelleth] under curtains.
Or, comme David vivait tranquillement en sa demeure, il dit à Nathan, le prophète: "Vois, j’habite un palais de cèdre, et l’arche d’alliance du Seigneur est logée sous une tente!"
2 And Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in thine heart; for God is with thee.
Nathan répondit à David: "Tout ce qui est dans ta pensée, exécute-le, car le Seigneur est avec toi."
3 And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying,
Cependant cette nuit même, la parole de Dieu s’adressa ainsi à Nathan:
4 Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith the LORD, Thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in:
"Va dire à David, mon serviteur: Ainsi a parlé l’Eternel: Ce n’est pas toi qui me construiras un temple pour ma résidence!
5 for I have not dwelt in an house since the day that I brought up Israel, unto this day; but have gone from tent to tent, and from [one] tabernacle [to another].
Pourtant je n’ai pas demeuré dans un temple depuis le jour où je tirai Israël de l’Egypte jusqu’à ce jour, mais j’ai voyagé sous une tente et dans un pavillon.
6 In all places wherein I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people, saying, Why have ye not built me an house of cedar?
Tout le temps que j’ai marché au milieu d’Israël, ai-je dit à un seul des Juges d’Israël que j’avais donnés pour pasteurs à mon peuple, ai-je dit: Pourquoi ne me bâtissez-vous pas une maison de cèdre?
7 Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be prince over my people Israel:
Donc, parle de la sorte à mon serviteur David: Ainsi a parlé l’Eternel-Cebaot: Je t’ai tiré du bercail où tu gardais les brebis, pour que tu deviennes chef de mon peuple Israël.
8 and I have been with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee; and I will make thee a name, like unto the name of the great ones that are in the earth.
Je t’ai assisté dans toutes tes voies, j’ai détruit devant toi tous tes ennemis, et je t’ai fait un nom égal aux plus grands noms de la terre.
9 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the first,
J’Ai assigné à mon peuple Israël une résidence où je l’ai implanté et où il se maintiendra et ne sera plus inquiété; des gens pervers ne le molesteront plus comme précédemment.
10 and [as] from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel; and I will subdue all thine enemies. Moreover I tell thee that the LORD will build thee an house.
Depuis l’époque où j’ai préposé des Juges à mon peuple, j’ai fait plier tous tes ennemis et je t’ai annoncé par là même que c’est l’Eternel qui t’érigera une maison.
11 And it shall come to pass, when thy days be fulfilled that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom.
Quand tes jours seront accomplis et que tu auras rejoint tes pères, j’élèverai à ta place ta progéniture un de tes fils et j’affermirai son empire.
12 He shall build me an house, and I will establish his throne for ever.
C’Est lui qui m’édifiera un temple, et moi, j’assurerai à jamais son trône.
13 I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee:
Je lui serai un père, et lui me sera un fils; je ne lui retirerai jamais ma grâce comme je l’ai retirée à celui qui t’a précédé.
14 but I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be established for ever.
Je le maintiendrai pour toujours dans ma maison et dans mon royaume, et son trône sera stable pour l’éternité."
15 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.
Toutes ces paroles et toute cette vision, Nathan les rapporta à David.
16 Then David the king went in, and sat before the LORD; and he said, Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my house, that thou hast brought me thus far?
Le roi David alla se mettre en présence du Seigneur et il dit: "Qui suis-je, Seigneur Dieu, et qu’est-ce que ma famille, pour que tu m’aies amené jusqu’ici?
17 And this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God; but thou hast spoken of thy servant’s house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O LORD God.
Encore était-ce trop peu à tes yeux, ô Dieu, et tu as annoncé, dans un lointain avenir, le sort de ma famille, me considérant comme un personnage de marque, Seigneur Dieu!
18 What can David [say] yet more unto thee concerning the honour which is done to thy servant? for thou knowest thy servant.
Que pourrait te dire encore de plus David sur l’honneur fait à ton serviteur? Ton serviteur, tu le connais bien!
19 O LORD, for thy servant’s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou wrought all this greatness, to make known all [these] great things.
Seigneur, c’est en faveur de ton serviteur et selon ta volonté que tu as accompli ces grandes choses, de manière à faire connaître tous tes exploits.
20 O LORD, there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
Seigneur, nul n’est comme toi, point de Dieu hormis toi, ainsi que nous l’avons entendu de nos oreilles.
21 And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem unto himself for a people, to make thee a name by great and terrible things, in driving out nations from before thy people, which thou redeemedst out of Egypt?
Et y a-t-il comme ton peuple Israël une seule nation sur la terre que Dieu lui-même soit allé délivrer, pour en faire son peuple et t’assurer un nom grand et redoutable, en chassant des nations devant ton peuple que tu as délivré de l’Egypte?
22 For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people for ever; and thou, LORD, becamest their God.
Tu t’es consacré ton peuple Israël comme un peuple à toi pour toujours, et toi, ô Eternel, tu es devenu son Dieu.
23 And now, O LORD, let the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, be established for ever, and do as thou hast spoken.
Et maintenant, ô Seigneur, puisse la parole que tu as dite au sujet de ton serviteur et de sa maison se confirmer à tout jamais! Puisses-tu faire comme tu l’as dit!
24 And let thy name be established and magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and the house of David thy servant is established before thee.
Oui, qu’elle se réalise, et que ton nom soit exalté à jamais par cette parole: "L’Eternel-Cebaot, le Dieu d’Israël, est un Dieu puissant pour Israël!" Et que la maison de ton serviteur David se maintienne devant toi!
25 For thou, O my God, hast revealed to thy servant that thou wilt build him an house: therefore hath thy servant found [in his heart] to pray before thee.
Puisque toi-même, mon Dieu, tu as révélé à l’oreille de ton serviteur ta volonté de lui édifier une maison, ton serviteur s’est trouvé enhardi à t’adresser cette prière.
26 And now, O LORD, thou art God, and hast promised this good thing unto thy servant:
Or, Seigneur, tu es le vrai Dieu, et toi-même tu as promis ce bien à ton serviteur.
27 and now it hath pleased thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee: for thou, O LORD, hast blessed, and it is blessed for ever.
Veuille donc bénir la maison de ton serviteur: qu’elle subsiste constamment devant toi, puisque aussi bien, si toi, Eternel, tu la bénis, elle restera bénie à tout jamais!"
