< Psalms 119 >
1 Happy they whose life is blameless, who walk by the law of the Lord.
Alleluia. Blessed are the immaculate in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord.
2 Happy they who keep his charges, and seek him with all their hearts;
Blessed are those who examine his testimonies. They seek him with their whole heart.
3 who have done no wrong, but walk in his ways.
For those who work iniquity have not walked in his ways.
4 You yourself have appointed your precepts to be kept with diligence.
You have ordered your commandments to be kept most diligently.
5 O to be steadily guided in the keeping of your statutes!
I wish that my ways may be directed so as to keep your justifications.
6 Then unashamed shall I be, when I look towards all your commandments.
Then I will not be confounded, when I will look into all your commandments.
7 I will thank you with heart unfeigned, when I learn your righteous judgments.
I will confess to you with honesty of heart. In this way, I have learned the judgments of your justice.
8 I will observe your statutes: O forsake me not utterly.
I will keep your justifications. Do not utterly abandon me.
9 How can a young person keep their life pure? By giving heed to your word.
By what does an adolescent correct his way? By keeping to your words.
10 With all my heart have I sought you, let me not stray from your commandments.
With my whole heart, I have sought you. Do not let me be driven away from your commandments.
11 In my heart have I treasured your word, to keep from sinning against you.
I have hidden your eloquence in my heart, so that I may not sin against you.
12 Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes.
Blessed are you, O Lord. Teach me your justifications.
13 With my lips have I rehearsed all the judgments of your mouth.
With my lips, I have pronounced all the judgments of your mouth.
14 I delight in the way of your charges, more than in riches of all sorts.
I have been delighted in the way of your testimonies, as if in all riches.
15 I will muse upon your precepts, and look to your paths.
I will be trained in your commandments, and I will consider your ways.
16 In your statutes I delight, I will not forget your word.
I will meditate on your justifications. I will not forget your words.
17 Grant that your servant may live, and I will observe your word.
Repay your servant, revive me; and I will keep your words.
18 Open my eyes, that I see wondrous things out of your law.
Reveal to my eyes, and I will consider the wonders of your law.
19 But a guest am I on the earth: hide not your commandments from me.
I am a sojourner on the earth. Do not hide your commandments from me.
20 My heart is crushed with longing for your ordinances, at all times.
My soul has longed to desire your justifications at all times.
21 You rebuke the proud, the accursed, who wander from your commandments.
You have rebuked the arrogant. Those who decline from your commandments are accursed.
22 Roll away from me scorn and contempt, for I have observed your charges.
Take me away from disgrace and contempt, for I have sought your testimonies.
23 Though princes sit plotting against me, your servant will muse on your statutes.
For even the leaders sat and spoke against me. But your servant has been trained in your justifications.
24 Your charges are my delight, they are my counsellors.
For your testimonies are also my (meditation) and your justifications are my counsel.
25 I lie grovelling in the dust; revive me, as you have promised.
My soul has adhered to the pavement. Revive me according to your word.
26 I told of my ways, you made answer; teach me your statutes.
I have declared my ways, and you have heeded me. Teach me your justifications.
27 Grant me insight into your precepts, and I will muse on your wonders.
Instruct me in the way of your justifications, and I will be trained in your wonders.
28 I am overcome with sorrow; raise me up, as you have promised.
My soul has slumbered because of weariness. Confirm me in your words.
29 Put the way of falsehood from me, and graciously grant me your law.
Remove the way of iniquity from me, and have mercy on me by your law.
30 I have chosen the way of fidelity, your ordinances I long for.
I have chosen the way of truth. I have not forgotten your judgments.
31 I hold fast to your charges: O put me not, Lord, to shame.
I have adhered to your testimonies, O Lord. Do not be willing to confound me.
32 I will run in the way of your commandments, for you give me room of heart.
I have run by way of your commandments, when you enlarged my heart.
33 Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes, and I will keep it to the end,
O Lord, place the law before me, the way of your justifications, and I will always inquire into it.
34 instruct me to keep your law, and I will observe it with all my heart.
Give me understanding, and I will examine your law. And I will keep it with my whole heart.
35 Guide me in the path of your commandments, for therein do I delight.
Lead me according to the path of your commandments, for I have desired this.
36 Incline my heart to your charges, and not to greed of gain.
Bend my heart with your testimonies, and not with avarice.
37 Turn away my eyes from vain sights, revive me by your word.
Turn my eyes away, lest they see what is vain. Revive me in your way.
38 Confirm to your servant the promise which is given to those who fear you.
Station your eloquence with your servant, along with your fear.
39 Remove the reproach which I dread, because your judgments are good.
Cut off my disgrace, which I have taken up, for your judgments are delightful.
40 Behold, I long for your precepts. Quicken me in your righteousness.
Behold, I have longed for your commandments. Revive me in your fairness.
41 Visit me, Lord, with your love and salvation, as you have promised.
And let your mercy overwhelm me, O Lord: your salvation according to your eloquence.
42 So shall I answer my slanderers, for my trust is in your word.
And I will respond to those who reproach me by word, for I have hoped in your words.
43 Snatch not from my mouth the word of truth, for in your judgments I hope.
And do not utterly take away the word of truth from my mouth. For in your judgments, I have hoped beyond hope.
44 I will keep your law continually, for ever and evermore.
And I will always keep your law, in this age and forever and ever.
45 So shall I walk in wide spaces, for I give my mind to your precepts.
And I have wandered far and wide, because I was seeking your commandments.
46 I will speak of your charge before kings, and will not be ashamed thereof.
And I spoke of your testimonies in the sight of kings, and I was not confounded.
47 Your commandments are my delight, I love them exceedingly.
And I meditated on your commandments, which I loved.
48 I will lift up my hands to your commandments, and muse upon your statutes.
And I lifted up my hands to your commandments, which I loved. And I was trained in your justifications.
49 Remember your word to your servant, on which you have made me to hope.
Be mindful of your word to your servant, by which you have given me hope.
50 This is my comfort in trouble, that your word gives life to me.
This has consoled me in my humiliation, for your word has revived me.
51 The arrogant utterly scorn me, but I have not declined from your law.
The arrogant act altogether iniquitously, but I have not turned aside from your law.
52 When I think of your judgments of old, O Lord, I take to me comfort.
I called to mind your judgments of antiquity, O Lord, and I was consoled.
53 I am seized with glowing anger at the wicked who forsake your law.
Faintness has taken hold of me, because of the sinners, those who abandon your law.
54 Your statutes have been to me songs in the house of my pilgrimage.
Your justifications were the subject of my worthy singing, in the place of my pilgrimage.
55 I remember your name in the night, O Lord and observe your law.
During the night, I remembered your name, O Lord, and I kept your law.
56 My lot has been this, that I have kept your precepts.
This has happened to me because I sought your justifications.
57 My portion are you, O Lord: I have promised to keep your words.
O Lord, my portion, I have said that I would keep your law.
58 I entreat you with all my heart; grant me your promised favor.
I have beseeched your face with my whole heart. Be merciful to me according to your word.
59 I have thought upon my ways, and turned my feet to your charges.
I have considered my ways, and I have turned my feet toward your testimonies.
60 I hasted and tarried not to give heed to your commandments.
I have been prepared, and I have not been disturbed, so that I may keep your commandments.
61 Though the godless have wound their cords round me, I have not forgotten your law.
The ropes of the impious have encircled me, and I have not forgotten your law.
62 At midnight I rise to praise you because of your righteous judgments.
I arose in the middle of the night to confess to you, over the judgments of your justification.
63 With all those who fear you I company, aid with those who observe your precepts.
I am a partaker with all those who fear you and who keep your commandments.
64 The earth, Lord, is full of your kindness; teach me your Statutes.
The earth, O Lord, is full of your mercy. Teach me your justifications.
65 Well have you dealt with your servant, as you have promised, O Lord.
You have done well with your servant, O Lord, according to your word.
66 Teach me discretion and knowledge, for I have believed your commandments.
Teach me goodness and discipline and knowledge, for I have trusted your commandments.
67 Till trouble came I was a wanderer, but now I observe your word.
Before I was humbled, I committed offenses; because of this, I have kept to your word.
68 You are good and do good; teach me your statutes.
You are good, so in your goodness teach me your justifications.
69 The proud have forged lies against me, but I keep your precepts with all my heart.
The iniquity of the arrogant has been multiplied over me. Yet I will examine your commandments with all my heart.
70 Their heart is gross like fat, but I delight in your law.
Their heart has been curdled like milk. Truly, I have meditated on your law.
71 It was good for me to be humbled, that I should learn your statutes.
It is good for me that you humbled me, so that I may learn your justifications.
72 The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.
The law of your mouth is good for me, beyond thousands of gold and silver pieces.
73 Your hands have made me and fashioned me; make me wise to learn your commandments.
Your hands have created me and formed me. Give me understanding, and I will learn your commandments.
74 Those who fear you shall see me with joy, for in your word have I hoped.
Those who fear you will see me, and they will rejoice. For I have greatly hoped in your words.
75 I know, O Lord, that your judgments are right, and in faithfulness you have afflicted me.
I know, O Lord, that your judgments are fairness. And in your truth, you have humbled me.
76 Let your love be a comfort to me, for so have you promised your servant.
Let it be your mercy that consoles me, according to your eloquence to your servant.
77 Visit me with your quickening pity, for your law is my delight.
Let your compassion draw near to me, and I will live. For your law is my (meditation)
78 Put the proud to shame, who have wronged me falsely: I will muse on your precepts.
Let the arrogant be confounded, for unjustly they have done iniquity to me. But I will be trained in your commandments.
79 Let those turn to me who fear you, that they may learn your charges.
Let those who fear you turn to me, along with those who know your testimonies.
80 Let my heart be sound in your statutes, that I may not be put to shame.
Let my heart be immaculate in your justifications, so that I may not be confounded.
81 My long for you to rescue me, I put my hope in your word.
My soul has faltered in your salvation, yet in your word, I have hoped beyond hope.
82 My eyes pine away for your promise: saying, “When will you comfort me?”
My eyes have failed in your eloquence, saying, “When will you console me?”
83 Though shrivelled like wine-skin in smoke, your statutes I have not forgotten.
For I have become like a wineskin in the frost. I have not forgotten your justifications.
84 How few are the days of your servant! When will you judge those who harass me?
How many are the days of your servant? When will you bring judgment against those who persecute me?
85 Proud people have dug for me pits people who do not conform to your law.
The iniquitous have spoken fables to me. But these are unlike your law.
86 All your commandments are trusty. With falsehood they harass me: help me.
All your commandments are truth. They have been persecuting me unjustly: assist me.
87 They had nearly made an end of me, yet I did not forget your precepts.
They have nearly consumed me on earth. Yet I have not forsaken your commandments.
88 Spare me in your kindness, and I will observe the charge of your mouth.
Revive me according to your mercy. And I will keep the testimonies of your mouth.
89 Forever, O Lord, is your word fixed firmly in the heavens.
O Lord, your word remains firm in heaven, for all eternity.
90 Your truth endures age after age; it is established on earth, and it stands.
Your truth is from generation to generation. You have founded the earth, and it remains firm.
91 By your appointment they stand this day, for all are your servants.
By your ordinance, the day perseveres. For all things are in service to you.
92 Had not your law been my joy, in my misery then had I perished.
If your law had not been my (meditation) then perhaps I would have perished in my humiliation.
93 I will never forget your precepts, for through them you have put life in me.
I will not forget your justifications, for eternity. For by them, you have enlivened me.
94 I am yours, O save me, for I give my mind to your precepts.
I am yours. Accomplish my salvation. For I have inquired into your justifications.
95 The wicked lay wait to destroy me, but I give heed to your charge.
The sinners have waited for me, in order to destroy me. I have understood your testimonies.
96 I have seen a limit to all things: but your commandment is spacious exceedingly.
I have seen the end of the consummation of all things. Your commandment is exceedingly broad.
97 O how I love your law! All the day long I muse on it.
How have I loved your law, O Lord? It is my meditation all day long.
98 Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies: for it is mine forever.
By your commandment, you have made me able to see far, beyond my enemies. For it is with me for eternity.
99 I am prudent above all my teachers, for your charges are my (meditation)
I have understood beyond all my teachers. For your testimonies are my (meditation)
100 I have insight more than the aged, because I observe your precepts.
I have understood beyond the elders. For I have searched your commandments.
101 I refrain my foot from all wicked ways, that I may keep your word.
I have prohibited my feet from every evil way, so that I may keep your words.
102 I turn not aside from your judgments, for you yourself are my teacher.
I have not declined from your judgments, because you have stationed a law for me.
103 How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
How sweet is your eloquence to my palate, more so than honey to my mouth!
104 Insight I win through your precepts, therefore every false way I hate.
I obtained understanding by your commandments. Because of this, I have hated every way of iniquity.
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my paths.
106 I have sworn an oath, and will keep it, to observe your righteous judgments.
I have sworn it, and so I am determined to keep the judgments of your justice.
107 I am afflicted sorely: revive me, O Lord, as you said.
I have been altogether humbled, Lord. Revive me according to your word.
108 Accept, Lord, my willing praise, and teach me your judgments.
Make the willing offerings of my mouth well pleasing, Lord, and teach me your judgments.
109 My life is in ceaseless peril; but I do not forget your law.
My soul is always in my hands, and I have not forgotten your law.
110 The wicked set traps for me, yet I do not stray from your precepts.
Sinners have set a snare for me, yet I have not strayed from your commandments.
111 In your charges are my everlasting inheritance, they are the joy of my heart.
I have acquired your testimonies as an inheritance unto eternity, because they are the exultation of my heart.
112 I am resolved to perform your statutes forever, to the utmost.
I have inclined my heart to do your justifications for eternity, as a recompense.
113 I hate people of divided heart, but your law do I love.
I have hated the iniquitous, and I have loved your law.
114 You are my shelter and shield: in your word do I hope.
You are my helper and my supporter. And in your word, I have greatly hoped.
115 Begone, you wicked people, I will keep the commands of my God.
Turn away from me, you malignant ones. And I will examine the commandments of my God.
116 Uphold me and spare me, as you have promised: O disappoint me not.
Uphold me according to your eloquence, and I will live. And let me not be confounded in my expectation.
117 Hold me up, and I shall be saved: and your statutes shall be my unceasing delight.
Help me, and I will be saved. And I will meditate always on your justifications.
118 All who swerve from your statutes you spurn: their cunning is in vain.
You have despised all those who fell away from your judgments. For their intention is unjust.
119 All the wicked of earth you count as dross, therefore I love your charges.
I have considered all the sinners of the earth to be transgressors. Therefore, I have loved your testimonies.
120 My flesh, for fear of you, shudders, and I stand in awe of your judgments.
Pierce my flesh with your fear, for I am afraid of your judgments.
121 Justice and right have I practised, do not leave me to my oppressors.
I have accomplished judgment and justice. Do not hand me over to those who slander me.
122 Be your servant’s surety for good, let not the proud oppress me.
Uphold your servant in what is good. And do not allow the arrogant to slander me.
123 My eyes pine for your salvation, and for your righteous promise.
My eyes have failed in your salvation and in the eloquence of your justice.
124 Deal in your love with your servant, and teach me your statutes.
Deal with your servant according to your mercy, and teach me your justifications.
125 Your servant am I; instruct me, that I may know your charges.
I am your servant. Give me understanding, so that I may know your testimonies.
126 It is time for the Lord to act: they have violated your law.
It is time to act, O Lord. They have dissipated your law.
127 Therefore I love your commandments above gold, above fine gold.
Therefore, I have loved your commandments beyond gold and topaz.
128 So by all your precepts I guide me, and every false way I hate.
Because of this, I was directed toward all your commandments. I held hatred for every iniquitous way.
129 Your decrees are wonderful, gladly I keep them.
Your testimonies are wonderful. Therefore, my soul has been examined by them.
130 When your word is unfolded, light breaks; it imparts to the simple wisdom.
The declaration of your words illuminates, and it gives understanding to little ones.
131 With open mouth I pant with longing for your commandments.
I opened my mouth and drew breath, for I desired your commandments.
132 Turn to me with your favor, as is just to those who love you.
Gaze upon me and be merciful to me, according to the judgment of those who love your name.
133 Steady my steps by your word, so that sin have no power over me.
Direct my steps according to your eloquence, and let no injustice rule over me.
134 Set me free from those who oppress me, and I shall observe your precepts.
Redeem me from the slanders of men, so that I may keep your commandments.
135 Shine with your face on your servant, and teach me your statutes.
Make your face shine upon your servant, and teach me your justifications.
136 My eyes run down with rills of water, because your law is not kept.
My eyes have gushed like springs of water, because they have not kept your law.
137 Righteous are you, O Lord, and right are your ordinances.
You are just, O Lord, and your judgment is right.
138 The laws you has ordered are just, and trusty exceedingly.
You have commanded justice: your testimonies and your truth even more so.
139 My jealousy has undone me, that my foes have forgotten your words.
My zeal has caused me to pine away, because my enemies have forgotten your words.
140 Your word has been tested well; and your servant loves it.
Your eloquence has been greatly enflamed, and your servant has loved it.
141 I am little and held in contempt, but your precepts I have not forgotten.
I am young and treated with contempt. But I have not forgotten your justifications.
142 Just is your justice forever, and trusty is your law.
Your justice is justice for all eternity, and your law is truth.
143 Stress and strain are upon me, but your commandments are my delight.
Tribulation and anguish have found me. Your commandments are my (meditation)
144 Right are your charges forever, instruct me that I may live.
Your testimonies are fairness unto eternity. Give me understanding, and I will live.
145 With my whole heart I cry; O answer me. I would keep your statutes, O Lord.
I cried out with my whole heart. Heed me, O Lord. I will ask for your justifications.
146 I cry to you: O save me, and I will observe your charges.
I cried out to you. Save me, so that I may keep your commandments.
147 Before dawn I cry for your help: in your word do I hope.
I arrived first in maturity, and so I cried out. For in your words, I have hoped beyond hope.
148 Awake I meet the night-watches, to muse upon your sayings.
My eyes preceded the dawn for you, so that I might meditate on your eloquence.
149 Hear my voice in your kindness: O Lord, by your judgments revive me.
Hear my voice according to your mercy, O Lord. And revive me according to your judgment.
150 Near me are wicked tormentors, who are far from thoughts of your law;
Those who persecute me have drawn near to iniquity, but they have been brought far from your law.
151 but near, too, are you, O Lord, and all your commandments are trusty.
You are near, O Lord, and all your ways are truth.
152 Long have I known from your charges that you have founded them for all time.
I have known from the beginning about your testimonies. For you founded them in eternity.
153 Look on my misery, and rescue me; for I do not forget your law.
See my humiliation and rescue me, for I have not forgotten your law.
154 Defend my cause and redeem me: revive me, as you have promised.
Judge my judgment and redeem me. Revive me because of your eloquence.
155 Salvation is far from the wicked, for their mind is not in your statutes.
Salvation is far from sinners, because they have not inquired about your justifications.
156 Great is your pity, O Lord: Revive me, as you have ordained.
Many are your mercies, O Lord. Enliven me according to your judgment.
157 My foes and tormentors are many, but I have not declined from your charges.
Many are those who persecute me and who trouble me. I have not turned away from your testimonies.
158 I behold the traitors with loathing, for they do not observe your word.
I saw the prevaricators, and I pine away. For they have not kept your word.
159 Behold how I love your precepts: revive me, O Lord!, in your kindness.
O Lord, see how I have loved your commandments. Revive me in your mercy.
160 The sum of your word is truth, all your laws are just and eternal.
The beginning of your words is truth. All the judgments of your justice are for eternity.
161 Princes have harassed me wantonly: but my heart stands in awe of your word.
The leaders have persecuted me without cause. And my heart has been awed by your words.
162 Over your word I rejoice as one who finds great spoil.
I will rejoice over your eloquence, like one who has found many spoils.
163 Falsehood I hate and abhor, but your law do I love.
I have held hatred for iniquity, and I have abhorred it. Yet I have loved your law.
164 Seven times a day do I praise you because of your righteous judgments.
Seven times a day, I uttered praise to you about the judgments of your justice.
165 Right well do they fare who love your law: they go on their way without stumbling.
Those who love your law have great peace, and there is no scandal for them.
166 I hope for your salvation; O Lord I do your commandments.
I have waited for your salvation, O Lord. And I have loved your commandments.
167 I observe your charges: I love them greatly.
My soul has kept to your testimonies and has loved them exceedingly.
168 I observe your precepts and charges: all my ways are before you.
I have served your commandments and your testimonies. For all my ways are before your sight.
169 Let my cry come before you, O Lord: give me insight, as you have promised.
O Lord, let my supplication draw near in your sight. Grant understanding to me according to your eloquence.
170 Let my prayer enter into your presence: deliver me, as you have said.
Let my petition enter before you. Rescue me according to your word.
171 My lips shall be fountains of praise, that you teach me your statutes.
A hymn will burst forth from my lips, when you will teach me your justifications.
172 My tongue shall sing of your word, for all your commandments are right.
My tongue will pronounce your eloquence. For all your commandments are fairness.
173 Let your hand be ready to help me, for your precepts have been my choice.
Let it be your hand that saves me. For I have chosen your commandments.
174 I long, Lord, for your salvation, and your law is my delight.
O Lord, I have longed for your salvation, and your law is my (meditation)
175 Revive me that I may praise you, and let your precepts help me.
My soul will live and will praise you, and your judgments will assist me.
176 I have strayed like a wandering sheep seek your servant, because I do not forget your commandments.
I have gone astray like a sheep that is lost. Seek out your servant, for I have not forgotten your commandments.
