Matthew 15
1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the Law came to Jesus, and said,
Τότε προσέρχονται τῷ Ἰησοῦ (οἱ *k*) ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων Φαρισαῖοι καὶ γραμματεῖς λέγοντες·
2 “How is it that your disciples break the traditions of our ancestors? For they do not wash their hands when they eat food.”
διὰ τί οἱ μαθηταί σου παραβαίνουσιν τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων; οὐ γὰρ νίπτονται τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῶν ὅταν ἄρτον ἐσθίωσιν.
3 His reply was, “How is it that you on your side break God’s commandments out of respect for your own traditions?
Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· διὰ τί καὶ ὑμεῖς παραβαίνετε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν;
4 For God said – ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who abuses his father or mother shall suffer death,’
ὁ γὰρ θεὸς (εἶπεν *N(k)O*) (λέγων· *k*) τίμα τὸν πατέρα (σοῦ *k*) καὶ τὴν μητέρα, καὶ ὁ κακολογῶν πατέρα ἢ μητέρα θανάτῳ τελευτάτω.
5 but you say ‘Whenever anyone says to his father or mother “Whatever of mine might have been of service to you is set apart for God,”
ὑμεῖς δὲ λέγετε· ὃς ἂν εἴπῃ τῷ πατρὶ ἢ τῇ μητρί· δῶρον ὃ ἐὰν ἐξ ἐμοῦ ὠφεληθῇς,
6 he is in no way bound to honor his father.’ In this way you have nullified the words of God for the sake of your traditions.
(καὶ *k*) οὐ μὴ (τιμήσει *N(k)O*) τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ (ἢ τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ, *KO*) καὶ ἠκυρώσατε (τὸν *N(k)O*) (λόγον *N(K)O*) τοῦ θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν.
7 Hypocrites! It was well said by Isaiah when he prophesied about you –
Ὑποκριταί, καλῶς ἐπροφήτευσεν περὶ ὑμῶν Ἠσαΐας λέγων·
8 ‘This is a people that honor me with their lips, While their hearts are far removed from me;
(Ἐγγίζει μοι *K*) Ὁ λαὸς οὗτος (τῷ στόματι αὐτῶν καὶ *K*) τοῖς χείλεσίν με τιμᾷ, ἡ δὲ καρδία αὐτῶν πόρρω ἀπέχει ἀπ᾽ ἐμοῦ.
9 but vainly do they worship me, For they teach but human precepts.’”
μάτην δὲ σέβονταί με διδάσκοντες διδασκαλίας, ἐντάλματα ἀνθρώπων.
10 Then Jesus called the people to him, and said, “Listen, and mark my words.
Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τὸν ὄχλον εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· ἀκούετε καὶ συνίετε·
11 It is not what enters a person’s mouth that defiles them, but what comes out from their mouth – that does defile them!”
οὐ τὸ εἰσερχόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον, ἀλλὰ τὸ ἐκπορευόμενον ἐκ τοῦ στόματος, τοῦτο κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον.
12 His disciples came up to him, and said, “Do you know that the Pharisees were shocked on hearing what you said?”
Τότε προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ (αὐτοῦ *ko*) (λέγουσιν *N(k)O*) αὐτῷ· οἶδας ὅτι οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες τὸν λόγον ἐσκανδαλίσθησαν;
13 “Every plant,” Jesus replied, “that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up.
Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν· πᾶσα φυτεία ἣν οὐκ ἐφύτευσεν ὁ πατήρ μου ὁ οὐράνιος ἐκριζωθήσεται.
14 Leave them be; they are but blind guides; and, if one blind person guides another, both of them will fall into a ditch.”
ἄφετε αὐτούς· τυφλοί εἰσιν ὁδηγοί τυφλῶν. τυφλὸς δὲ τυφλὸν ἐὰν ὁδηγῇ, ἀμφότεροι εἰς βόθυνον πεσοῦνται.
15 Peter spoke up, “Explain this saying to us.”
ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ· φράσον ἡμῖν τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην.
16 “What, do even you understand nothing yet?” Jesus exclaimed.
Ὁ δὲ (Ἰησοῦς *k*) εἶπεν· ἀκμὴν καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀσύνετοί ἐστε;
17 “Don’t you see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is afterward expelled?
(οὐ *N(K)O*) νοεῖτε ὅτι πᾶν τὸ εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν χωρεῖ καὶ εἰς ἀφεδρῶνα ἐκβάλλεται;
18 But the things that come out of the mouth proceed from the heart, and it is these that defile a person;
τὰ δὲ ἐκπορευόμενα ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ἐκ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχεται, κἀκεῖνα κἀκεῖνα κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον.
19 for out of the heart proceed evil thoughts – murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, perjury, slander.
ἐκ γὰρ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχονται διαλογισμοὶ πονηροί, φόνοι, μοιχεῖαι, πορνεῖαι, κλοπαί, ψευδομαρτυρίαι, βλασφημίαι.
20 These are the things that defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a person.”
ταῦτά ἐστιν τὰ κοινοῦντα τὸν ἄνθρωπον· τὸ δὲ ἀνίπτοις χερσὶν φαγεῖν οὐ κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον.
21 On going away from that place, Jesus went to the country around Tyre and Sidon.
Καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἐκεῖθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν εἰς τὰ μέρη Τύρου καὶ Σιδῶνος.
22 There, a Canaanite woman of that district came out and began calling to Jesus, “Take pity on me, Master, Son of David; my daughter is grievously possessed by a demon.”
καὶ ἰδοὺ γυνὴ Χαναναία ἀπὸ τῶν ὁρίων ἐκείνων ἐξελθοῦσα (ἔκραζεν *N(k)O*) (αὐτῷ *k*) λέγουσα· ἐλέησόν με, κύριε (υἱὸς *N(k)O*) Δαυίδ. ἡ θυγάτηρ μου κακῶς δαιμονίζεται.
23 But Jesus did not answer her a word; and his disciples came up and begged him to send her away. “She keeps calling out after us,” they said.
Ὁ δὲ οὐκ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῇ λόγον. καὶ προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἠρώτουν αὐτὸν λέγοντες· ἀπόλυσον αὐτήν, ὅτι κράζει ὄπισθεν ἡμῶν.
24 “I was not sent,” replied Jesus, “to anyone except the lost sheep of Israel.”
Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν· οὐκ ἀπεστάλην εἰ μὴ εἰς τὰ πρόβατα τὰ ἀπολωλότα οἴκου Ἰσραήλ.
25 But the woman came, and, bowing to the ground before him, said, “Master, help me.”
Ἡ δὲ ἐλθοῦσα (προσεκύνει *NK(o)*) αὐτῷ λέγουσα· κύριε, βοήθει μοι.
26 “It is not fair,” replied Jesus, “to take the children’s food and throw it to dogs.”
Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν· οὐκ ἔστιν καλὸν λαβεῖν τὸν ἄρτον τῶν τέκνων καὶ βαλεῖν τοῖς κυναρίοις.
27 “Yes, Master,” she said, “for even dogs do feed on the scraps that fall from their owners’ table.”
Ἡ δὲ εἶπεν· ναὶ κύριε· καὶ γὰρ τὰ κυνάρια ἐσθίει ἀπὸ τῶν ψιχίων τῶν πιπτόντων ἀπὸ τῆς τραπέζης τῶν κυρίων αὐτῶν.
28 “Your faith is great,” was his reply to the woman, “it will be as you wish!” And her daughter was cured that very hour.
Τότε ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῇ· ὦ γύναι, μεγάλη σου ἡ πίστις· γενηθήτω σοι ὡς θέλεις. καὶ ἰάθη ἡ θυγάτηρ αὐτῆς ἀπὸ τῆς ὥρας ἐκείνης.
29 On leaving that place, Jesus went to the shore of the Sea of Galilee; and then went up the hill, and sat down.
Καὶ μεταβὰς ἐκεῖθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἦλθεν παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας, καὶ ἀναβὰς εἰς τὸ ὄρος ἐκάθητο ἐκεῖ.
30 Great crowds of people came to him, bringing with them those who were lame, crippled, blind, or dumb, and many others. They put them down at his feet, and he cured them;
καὶ προσῆλθον αὐτῷ ὄχλοι πολλοὶ ἔχοντες μεθ᾽ ἑαυτῶν χωλούς, τυφλούς, κυλλούς, κωφούς, καὶ ἑτέρους πολλοὺς καὶ ἔρριψαν αὐτοὺς παρὰ τοὺς πόδας (αὐτοῦ *N(k)O*) (Ἰησοῦ· *k*) καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν αὐτοὺς
31 and the crowds were astonished, when they saw the dumb talking, the cripples made sound, the lame walking about, and the blind with their sight restored; and they praised the God of Israel.
ὥστε (τὸν ὄχλον *N(k)O*) θαυμάσαι βλέποντας κωφοὺς λαλοῦντας, κυλλοὺς ὑγιεῖς, (καὶ *no*) χωλοὺς περιπατοῦντας, καὶ τυφλοὺς βλέποντας. καὶ ἐδόξασαν τὸν θεὸν Ἰσραήλ.
32 Afterward Jesus called his disciples to him, and said, “My heart is moved at the sight of all these people, for they have already been with me three days and they have nothing to eat; and I am unwilling to send them away hungry; they might faint on the way home.”
Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς προσκαλεσάμενος τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ εἶπεν· σπλαγχνίζομαι ἐπὶ τὸν ὄχλον ὅτι ἤδη (ἡμέραι *N(k)O*) τρεῖς προσμένουσίν μοι καὶ οὐκ ἔχουσιν τί φάγωσιν. καὶ ἀπολῦσαι αὐτοὺς νήστεις οὐ θέλω μήποτε μήποτε ἐκλυθῶσιν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ.
33 “Where can we,” his disciples asked, “in a lonely place find enough bread for such a crowd as this?”
καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί (αὐτοῦ· *ko*) πόθεν ἡμῖν ἐν ἐρημίᾳ ἄρτοι τοσοῦτοι ὥστε χορτάσαι ὄχλον τοσοῦτον;
34 “How many loaves have you?” said Jesus. “Seven,” they answered, “and a few small fish.”
Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· πόσους ἄρτους ἔχετε; οἱ δὲ εἶπαν· ἑπτὰ καὶ ὀλίγα ἰχθύδια.
35 Telling the crowd to sit down on the ground,
καὶ (παραγγείλας τῷ ὄχλῳ *N(k)O*) ἀναπεσεῖν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν
36 Jesus took the seven loaves and the fish, and, after saying the thanksgiving, broke them, and gave them to the disciples; and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
(καὶ *k*) (ἔλαβεν *N(k)O*) τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς ἰχθύας, (καὶ *no*) εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ (ἐδίδου *N(k)O*) τοῖς μαθηταῖς (αὐτοῦ, *ko*) οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ (τοῖς ὄχλοις. *N(k)O*)
37 Everyone had sufficient to eat, and they picked up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left.
καὶ ἔφαγον πάντες καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν, καὶ τὸ περισσεῦον τῶν κλασμάτων ἦραν, ἑπτὰ σπυρίδας πλήρεις.
38 The men who ate were four thousand in number without counting women and children.
οἱ δὲ ἐσθίοντες ἦσαν τετρακισχίλιοι ἄνδρες χωρὶς γυναικῶν καὶ παιδίων.
39 Then, after dismissing the crowds, Jesus got into the boat, and went to the region of Magadan.
Καὶ ἀπολύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἐνέβη εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς τὰ ὅρια (Μαγαδάν. *N(k)O*)
