Matthew 14
1 At that time Prince Herod heard of the fame of Jesus,
In illo tempore audivit Herodes tetrarcha famam Iesu:
2 and said to his attendants, “This must be John the Baptist; he must be risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are active in him.”
et ait pueris suis: Hic est Ioannes Baptista: ipse surrexit a mortuis, et ideo virtutes operantur in eo.
3 For Herod had arrested John, put him in chains, and shut him up in prison, to please Herodias, the wife of Herod’s brother Philip.
Herodes enim tenuit Ioannem, et alligavit eum: et posuit in carcerem propter Herodiadem uxorem fratris sui.
4 For John had said to him ‘You have no right to be living with her.’
Dicebat enim illi Ioannes: Non licet tibi habere eam.
5 Yet, though Herod wanted to put him to death, he was afraid of the people, because they looked on John as a prophet.
Et volens illum occidere, timuit populum: quia sicut prophetam eum habebant.
6 But, when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before his guests, and so pleased Herod,
Die autem natalis Herodis saltavit filia Herodiadis in medio, et placuit Herodi.
7 that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
Unde cum iuramento pollicitus est ei dare quodcumque postulasset ab eo.
8 Prompted by her mother, the girl said ‘Give me here, on a dish, the head of John the Baptist.’
At illa praemonita a matre sua, Da mihi, inquit, hic in disco caput Ioannis Baptistae.
9 The king was distressed at this; yet, because of his oath and of the guests at his table, he ordered it to be given her.
Et contristatus est rex: propter iusiurandum autem, et eos, qui pariter recumbebant, iussit dari.
10 He had John beheaded in the prison
Misitque et decollavit Ioannem in carcere.
11 and his head was brought on a dish and given to the girl, and she took it to her mother.
Et allatum est caput eius in disco, et datum est puellae, et attulit matri suae.
12 Then John’s disciples came, and took the body away, and buried it; and went and told Jesus.
Et accedentes discipuli eius, tulerunt corpus eius, et sepelierunt illud: et venientes nunciaverunt Iesu.
13 When Jesus heard of it, he left privately in a boat to a lonely spot. The people, however, heard of his going, and followed him in crowds from the towns on foot.
Quod cum audisset Iesus, secessit inde in naviculam, in locum desertum seorsum: et cum audissent turbae, secutae sunt eum pedestres de civitatibus.
14 On getting out of the boat, Jesus saw a great crowd, and his heart was moved at the sight of them; and he cured all the sick among them.
Et exiens vidit turbam multam, et misertus est eis, et curavit languidos eorum.
15 In the evening the disciples came up to him, and said, “This is a lonely spot, and the day is now far advanced; send the crowds away so that they can go to the villages, and buy themselves food.”
Vespere autem facto, accesserunt ad eum discipuli eius, dicentes: Desertus est locus, et hora iam praeteriit: dimitte turbas, ut euntes in castella, emant sibi escas.
16 But Jesus said, “They need not go away, it is for you to give them something to eat.”
Iesus autem dixit eis: Non habent necesse ire: date illis vos manducare.
17 “We have nothing here,” they said, “except five loaves and two fish.”
Responderunt ei: Non habemus hic nisi quinque panes, et duos pisces.
18 “Bring them here to me,” was his reply.
Qui ait eis: Afferte mihi illos huc.
19 Jesus ordered the people to take their seats on the grass; and, taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and said the blessing, and, after he had broken the loaves, gave them to his disciples; and they gave them to the crowds.
Et cum iussisset turbam discumbere super foenum, acceptis quinque panibus, et duobus piscibus, aspiciens in caelum benedixit, et fregit, et dedit discipulis panes, discipuli autem dederunt turbis.
20 Everyone had sufficient to eat, and they picked up enough of the broken pieces that were left to fill twelve baskets.
Et manducaverunt omnes, et saturati sunt. Et tulerunt reliquias, duodecim cophinos fragmentorum plenos.
21 The men who ate were about five thousand in number, without counting women and children.
Manducantium autem fuit numerus, quinque millia virorum, exceptis mulieribus, et parvulis.
22 Immediately afterward Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and cross over in advance of him, while he dismissed the crowds.
Et statim compulit Iesus discipulos ascendere in naviculam, et praecedere eum trans fretum, donec dimitteret turbas.
23 After dismissing the crowds, he went up the hill by himself to pray; and, when evening fell, he was there alone.
Et dimissa turba, ascendit in montem solus orare. Vespere autem facto solus erat ibi.
24 The boat was by this time some miles from shore, laboring in the waves, for the wind was against her.
navicula autem in medio mari iactabatur fluctibus: erat enim contrarius ventus.
25 Three hours after midnight, however, Jesus came towards the disciples, walking on the water.
Quarta enim vigilia noctis, venit ad eos ambulans supra mare.
26 But, when they saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they exclaimed, and cried out in fear.
Et videntes eum supra mare ambulantem, turbati sunt, dicentes: Quia phantasma est. Et prae timore clamaverunt.
27 But Jesus at once spoke to them. “Courage!” he said, “It is I; do not be afraid!”
Statimque Iesus locutus est eis, dicens: Habete fiduciam: ego sum, nolite timere.
28 “Master,” Peter exclaimed, “if it is you, tell me to come to you on the water.”
Respondens autem Petrus dixit: Domine, si tu es, iube me ad te venire super aquas.
29 Jesus said, “Come.” So Peter got down from the boat, and walked on the water, and went towards Jesus;
At ipse ait: veni. Et descendens Petrus de navicula, ambulabat super aquam ut veniret ad Iesum.
30 but, when he felt the wind, he was frightened, and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Master! Save me!”
Videns vero ventum validum, timuit: et cum coepisset mergi, clamavit dicens: Domine, salvum me fac.
31 Instantly Jesus stretched out his hand, and caught hold of him. “You of little faith!” he said, “Why did you falter?”
Et continuo Iesus extendens manum, apprehendit eum: et ait illi: Modicae fidei, quare dubitasti?
32 When they had got into the boat, the wind dropped.
Et cum ascendisset in naviculam, cessavit ventus.
33 But the men in the boat threw themselves on their faces before him, and said, “You are indeed God’s Son.”
Qui autem in navicula erant, venerunt, et adoraverunt eum, dicentes: Vere filius Dei es.
34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.
Et cum transfretassent, venerunt in terram Genesar.
35 But the people of that place, recognizing Jesus, sent out to the whole country around, and brought to him all who were ill,
Et cum cognovissent eum viri loci illius, miserunt in universam regionem illam, et obtulerunt ei omnes male habentes:
36 begging him merely to let them touch the tassel of his cloak; and all who touched were made perfectly well.
et rogabant eum ut vel fimbriam vestimenti eius tangerent. Et quicumque tetigerunt, salvi facti sunt.
