< Luke 24 >

1 But very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb, taking with them the spices that they had prepared.
On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared.
2 They found that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb;
They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
3 and, on going into it, they could not find the body.
but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 While they were at a loss to account for this, all at once two men stood beside them, in dazzling clothing.
While they were puzzling over this, suddenly two men in radiant apparel stood beside them.
5 But, when in their fear the women bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why are you looking among the dead for him who is living?
As the women bowed their faces to the ground in terror, the two men asked them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?
6 Remember how he spoke to you before he left Galilee –
He is not here; He has risen! Remember how He told you while He was still in Galilee:
7 How he said that the Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of wicked men, and be crucified, and rise again on the third day.”
‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’”
8 Then they remembered the words of Jesus,
Then they remembered His words.
9 and, on returning from the tomb, they told all this to the Eleven and to all the rest.
And when they returned from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.
10 There were Mary of Magdala, and Joanna, and Mary, the mother of James. The other women, too, spoke about this to the apostles.
It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles.
11 What they said seemed to the apostles mere nonsense, and they did not believe them.
But their words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women.
Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. And after bending down and seeing only the linen cloths, he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
13 It happened that very day that two of the disciples were going to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem,
That same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.
14 talking together, as they went, about all that had just taken place.
They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.
15 While they were talking about these things and discussing them, Jesus himself came up and went on their way with them;
And as they talked and deliberated, Jesus Himself came up and walked along with them.
16 but their eyes were blinded so that they could not recognize him.
But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him.
17 “What is this that you are saying to each other as you walk along?” Jesus asked. They stopped, with sad looks on their faces,
He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?” They stood still, with sadness on their faces.
18 and then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, said to Jesus, “Are you staying by yourself at Jerusalem, that you have not heard of the things that have happened there within the last few days?”
One of them, named Cleopas, asked Him, “Are You the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in recent days?”
19 “What things do you mean?” asked Jesus. “Why, about Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered, “who, in the eyes of God and all the people, was a prophet, whose power was felt in both his words and actions;
“What things?” He asked. “The events involving Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. “This man was a prophet, powerful in speech and action before God and all the people.
20 and how the chief priests and our leading men gave him up to be sentenced to death, and afterward crucified him.
Our chief priests and rulers delivered Him up to the sentence of death, and they crucified Him.
21 But we were hoping that he was the Destined Deliverer of Israel; yes, and besides all this, it is now three days since these things occurred.
But we were hoping He was the One who would redeem Israel. And besides all this, it is the third day since these things took place.
22 And what is more, some of the women among us have greatly astonished us. They went to the tomb at daybreak
Furthermore, some of our women astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning,
23 And, not finding the body of Jesus there, came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels who told them that he was alive.
but they did not find His body. They came and told us they had seen a vision of angels, who said that Jesus was alive.
24 So some of our number went to the tomb and found everything just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”
Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had described. But Him they did not see.”
25 Then Jesus said to them, “Foolish men, slow to accept all that the prophets have said!
Then Jesus said to them, “O foolish ones, how slow are your hearts to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
26 Was not the Christ bound to undergo this suffering before entering into his glory?”
Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and then to enter His glory?”
27 Then, beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them all through the scriptures the passages that referred to himself.
And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was written in all the Scriptures about Himself.
28 When they got near the village to which they were walking, Jesus appeared to be going further;
As they approached the village where they were headed, He seemed to be going farther.
29 but they pressed him not to do so. “Stay with us,” they said, “for it is getting towards evening, and the sun is already low.” So Jesus went in to stay with them.
But they pleaded with Him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So He went in to stay with them.
30 After he had taken his place at the table with them, he took the bread and said the blessing, and broke it, and gave it to them.
While He was reclining at the table with them, He took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to them.
31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him; but he disappeared from their sight.
Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus—and He disappeared from their sight.
32 “How our hearts glowed,” the disciples said to each other, “while he was talking to us on the road, and when he explained the scriptures to us!”
They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us as He spoke with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
33 Then they immediately got up and returned to Jerusalem, where they found the Eleven and their companions all together,
And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, gathered together
34 who told them that the Master had really risen, and had appeared to Simon.
and saying, “The Lord has indeed risen and has appeared to Simon!”
35 So they also related what had happened during their walk, and how they had recognized Jesus at the breaking of the bread.
Then the two told what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread.
36 While they were still talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them.
While they were describing these events, Jesus Himself stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”
37 In their terror and alarm they thought they saw a ghost,
But they were startled and frightened, thinking they had seen a spirit.
38 but Jesus said to them, “Why are you so startled? And why do doubts arise in your minds?
“Why are you troubled,” Jesus asked, “and why do doubts arise in your hearts?
39 Look at my hands and my feet, and you will know that it is I. Feel me, and look at me, for a ghost has not flesh and bones, as you see that I have.”
Look at My hands and My feet. It is I Myself. Touch Me and see—for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”
And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and feet.
41 While they were still unable to believe it all, overcome with joy, and were wondering if it were true, Jesus said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?”
While they were still in disbelief because of their joy and amazement, He asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”
42 They handed him a piece of broiled fish,
So they gave Him a piece of broiled fish,
43 and he took it and ate it before their eyes.
and He took it and ate it in front of them.
44 “This is what I told you,” he said, “when I was still with you – that everything that had been written about me in the Law of Moses, the prophets, and the Psalms, must be fulfilled.”
Jesus said to them, “These are the words I spoke to you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms.”
45 Then he enabled them to understand the meaning of the scriptures, saying to them,
Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
46 “Scripture says that the Christ will suffer, and that he will rise again from the dead on the third day,
And He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed on his authority to all the nations – beginning at Jerusalem.
and in His name repentance and forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem.
48 You yourselves are to be witnesses to all this.
You are witnesses of these things.
49 And now I am myself about to send you that which my Father has promised. But you must remain in the city until you have been invested with power from above.”
And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you. But remain in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
50 After this, Jesus led them out as far as Bethany, and there raised his hands and blessed them.
When Jesus had led them out as far as Bethany, He lifted up His hands and blessed them.
51 As he was in the act of blessing them, he left them.
While He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven.
52 They returned to Jerusalem full of joy;
And they worshiped Him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
53 and they were constantly in the Temple Courts, blessing God.
praising God continually in the temple.
