< Luke 12 >

1 Meanwhile the people had gathered in thousands, so that they trod on one another, when Jesus, addressing himself to his disciples, began by saying to them, “Be on your guard against the leaven – that is, the hypocrisy – of the Pharisees.
Ἐν οἷς ἐπισυναχθεισῶν τῶν μυριάδων τοῦ ὄχλου ὥστε καταπατεῖν ἀλλήλους ἤρξατο λέγειν πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ πρῶτον· προσέχετε ἑαυτοῖς ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης ἥτις ἐστὶν ὑπόκρισις τῶν Φαρισαίων.
2 There is nothing, however covered up, which will not be uncovered, nor anything kept secret which will not become known.
Οὐδὲν δὲ συγκεκαλυμμένον ἐστὶν ὃ οὐκ ἀποκαλυφθήσεται, καὶ κρυπτὸν ὃ οὐ γνωσθήσεται.
3 So all that you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have spoken in the ear, within closed doors, will be proclaimed on the housetops.
ἀνθ᾽ ὧν ὅσα ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ εἴπατε ἐν τῷ φωτὶ ἀκουσθήσεται, καὶ ὃ πρὸς τὸ οὖς ἐλαλήσατε ἐν τοῖς ταμείοις κηρυχθήσεται ἐπὶ τῶν δωμάτων.
4 To you who are my friends I say, Do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but after that can do no more.
Λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν τοῖς φίλοις μου· μὴ φοβηθῆτε ἀπὸ τῶν ἀποκτεινόντων τὸ σῶμα καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα μὴ ἐχόντων περισσότερόν τι ποιῆσαι.
5 I will show you of whom you should be afraid. Be afraid of him who, after killing you, has the power to fling you into Gehenna. Yes, I say, be afraid of him. (Geenna g1067)
ὑποδείξω δὲ ὑμῖν τίνα φοβηθῆτε· φοβήθητε τὸν μετὰ τὸ ἀποκτεῖναι ἔχοντα ἐξουσίαν ἐμβαλεῖν εἰς τὴν γέενναν. ναὶ λέγω ὑμῖν· τοῦτον φοβήθητε. (Geenna g1067)
6 Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? Yet not one of them has escaped God’s notice.
οὐχὶ πέντε στρουθία (πωλοῦνται *N(k)O*) ἀσσαρίων δύο; καὶ ἓν ἐξ αὐτῶν οὐκ ἔστιν ἐπιλελησμένον ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ·
7 No, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.
ἀλλὰ καὶ αἱ τρίχες τῆς κεφαλῆς ὑμῶν πᾶσαι ἠρίθμηνται. μὴ (οὖν *K*) φοβεῖσθε· πολλῶν στρουθίων διαφέρετε.
8 Everyone, I tell you, who publicly acknowledges me, the Son of Man, also, will acknowledge before God’s angels;
Λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν· πᾶς ὃς ἂν (ὁμολογήσῃ *NK(o)*) ἐν ἐμοὶ ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων, καὶ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ὁμολογήσει ἐν αὐτῷ ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀγγέλων τοῦ θεοῦ·
9 but the person who publicly disowns me will be altogether disowned before God’s angels.
ὁ δὲ ἀρνησάμενός με ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀπαρνηθήσεται ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀγγέλων τοῦ θεοῦ.
10 Everyone who will say anything against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but for the person who slanders the Holy Spirit there will be no forgiveness.
καὶ πᾶς ὃς ἐρεῖ λόγον εἰς τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, ἀφεθήσεται αὐτῷ· τῷ δὲ εἰς τὸ ἅγιον πνεῦμα βλασφημήσαντι οὐκ ἀφεθήσεται.
11 Whenever they take you before the synagogue Courts or the magistrates or other authorities, do not be anxious as to how you will defend yourselves, or what your defense will be, or what you will say;
Ὅταν δὲ (εἰσφέρωσιν *N(k)O*) ὑμᾶς ἐπὶ τὰς συναγωγὰς καὶ τὰς ἀρχὰς καὶ τὰς ἐξουσίας, μὴ (μεριμνήσητε *N(k)O*) πῶς ἢ τί ἀπολογήσησθε ἢ τί εἴπητε·
12 for the Holy Spirit will show you at the moment what you ought to say.”
τὸ γὰρ ἅγιον πνεῦμα διδάξει ὑμᾶς ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἃ δεῖ εἰπεῖν.
13 “Teacher,” a man in the crowd said to Jesus, “tell my brother to share the property with me.”
Εἶπεν δέ τις ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου αὐτῷ· διδάσκαλε, εἰπὲ τῷ ἀδελφῷ μου μερίσασθαι μετ᾽ ἐμοῦ τὴν κληρονομίαν.
14 But Jesus said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or an arbiter between you?”
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· ἄνθρωπε, τίς με κατέστησεν (κριτὴν *N(k)O*) ἢ μεριστὴν ἐφ᾽ ὑμᾶς;
15 And then he added, “Take care to keep yourselves free from every form of covetousness; for even in the height of their prosperity a person’s true life does not depend on what they have.”
Εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς· ὁρᾶτε καὶ φυλάσσεσθε ἀπὸ (πάσης *N(k)O*) πλεονεξίας, ὅτι οὐκ ἐν τῷ περισσεύειν τινὶ ἡ ζωὴ (αὐτοῦ *NK(o)*) ἐστιν ἐκ τῶν ὑπαρχόντων (αὐτῷ. *N(k)O*)
16 Then Jesus told them this parable – “There was once a rich man whose land was very fertile;
Εἶπεν δὲ παραβολὴν πρὸς αὐτοὺς λέγων· ἀνθρώπου τινὸς πλουσίου εὐφόρησεν ἡ χώρα.
17 and he began to ask himself ‘What will I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?
καὶ διελογίζετο ἐν ἑαυτῷ λέγων· τί ποιήσω ὅτι οὐκ ἔχω ποῦ συνάξω τοὺς καρπούς μου;
18 This is what I will do,’ he said; ‘I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and store all my grain and my goods in them;
καὶ εἶπεν· τοῦτο ποιήσω· καθελῶ μου τὰς ἀποθήκας καὶ μείζονας οἰκοδομήσω καὶ συνάξω ἐκεῖ πάντα (τὸν σῖτον *N(k)O*) (μου *k*) καὶ τὰ ἀγαθά μου
19 and I will say to myself, Now you have plenty of good things put by for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.’
καὶ ἐρῶ τῇ ψυχῇ μου· ψυχή, ἔχεις πολλὰ ἀγαθὰ κείμενα εἰς ἔτη πολλά. ἀναπαύου, φάγε, πίε, εὐφραίνου.
20 But God said to the man ‘Fool! This very night your life is being demanded; and as for all you have prepared – who will have it?’
εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ θεός· ἄφρων, ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ τὴν ψυχήν σου (ἀπαιτοῦσιν *NK(o)*) ἀπὸ σοῦ. ἃ δὲ ἡτοίμασας, τίνι ἔσται;
21 So it is with those who lay by wealth for themselves and are not rich to the glory of God.”
οὕτως ὁ θησαυρίζων ἑαυτῷ καὶ μὴ εἰς θεὸν πλουτῶν.
22 And Jesus said to his disciples, “That is why I say to you, Do not be anxious about the life here – what you can get to eat; or about your body – what you can get to wear.
εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ· διὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν· μὴ μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ (ὑμῶν *k*) τί φάγητε, μηδὲ τῷ σώματι (ὑμῶν *o*) τί ἐνδύσησθε.
23 For life is more than food, and the body than its clothes.
ἡ (γὰρ *no*) ψυχὴ πλεῖόν ἐστιν τῆς τροφῆς, καὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος.
24 Think of the ravens – they neither sow nor reap; they have neither storehouse nor barn; and yet God feeds them! And how much more precious are you than birds!
κατανοήσατε τοὺς κόρακας ὅτι οὐ σπείρουσιν οὐδὲ θερίζουσιν οἷς οὐκ ἔστιν ταμεῖον οὐδὲ ἀποθήκη, καὶ ὁ θεὸς τρέφει αὐτούς· πόσῳ μᾶλλον ὑμεῖς διαφέρετε τῶν πετεινῶν;
25 But which of you, by being anxious, can prolong your life a moment?
τίς δὲ ἐξ ὑμῶν μεριμνῶν δύναται ἐπὶ τὴν ἡλικίαν αὐτοῦ προσθεῖναι πῆχυν (ἕνα; *ko*)
26 And, if you cannot do even the smallest thing, why be anxious about other things?
εἰ οὖν (οὐδὲ *N(k)O*) ἐλάχιστον δύνασθε, τί περὶ τῶν λοιπῶν μεριμνᾶτε;
27 Think of the lilies, and how they grow. They neither toil nor spin; yet, I tell you, even Solomon in all his splendor was not robed like one of these.
κατανοήσατε τὰ κρίνα πῶς αὐξάνει· οὐ κοπιᾷ οὐδὲ νήθει. λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν· οὐδὲ Σολομὼν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ δόξῃ αὐτοῦ περιεβάλετο ὡς ἓν τούτων.
28 If, even in the field, God so clothes the grass which is living today and tomorrow will be thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, you of little faith!
εἰ δὲ ἐν (τῷ *ko*) ἀγρῷ τὸν χόρτον ὄντα σήμερον καὶ αὔριον εἰς κλίβανον βαλλόμενον ὁ θεὸς οὕτως (ἀμφιέζει, *N(k)O*) πόσῳ μᾶλλον ὑμᾶς, ὀλιγόπιστοι;
29 And you – do not be always seeking what you can get to eat or what you can get to drink; and do not waver.
καὶ ὑμεῖς μὴ ζητεῖτε τί φάγητε (καὶ *N(k)O*) τί πίητε, καὶ μὴ μετεωρίζεσθε.
30 These are the things for which all the nations of the world are seeking, and your Father knows that you need them.
ταῦτα γὰρ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη τοῦ κόσμου (ἐπιζητοῦσιν· *N(k)O*) ὑμῶν δὲ ὁ πατὴρ οἶδεν ὅτι χρῄζετε τούτων.
31 No, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added for you.
πλὴν ζητεῖτε τὴν βασιλείαν (τοῦ *k*) (αὐτοῦ *N(K)O*) καὶ ταῦτα (πάντα *K*) προστεθήσεται ὑμῖν.
32 So do not be afraid, my little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.
Μὴ φοβοῦ, τὸ μικρὸν ποίμνιον, ὅτι εὐδόκησεν ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν δοῦναι ὑμῖν τὴν βασιλείαν.
33 “Sell what belongs to you, and give in charity. Make yourselves purses that will not wear out – an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near, or moth works ruin.
πωλήσατε τὰ ὑπάρχοντα ὑμῶν καὶ δότε ἐλεημοσύνην· ποιήσατε ἑαυτοῖς βαλλάντια μὴ παλαιούμενα, θησαυρὸν ἀνέκλειπτον ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς ὅπου κλέπτης οὐκ ἐγγίζει οὐδὲ σὴς διαφθείρει·
34 For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.
ὅπου γάρ ἐστιν ὁ θησαυρὸς ὑμῶν, ἐκεῖ καὶ ἡ καρδία ὑμῶν ἔσται.
35 Make yourselves ready, with your lamps alight;
Ἔστωσαν ὑμῶν αἱ ὀσφύες περιεζωσμέναι καὶ οἱ λύχνοι καιόμενοι,
36 and be like servants who are waiting for their Master’s return from his wedding, so that, when he comes and knocks, they may open the door for him at once.
καὶ ὑμεῖς ὅμοιοι ἀνθρώποις προσδεχομένοις τὸν κύριον ἑαυτῶν πότε (ἀναλύσῃ *N(k)O*) ἐκ τῶν γάμων, ἵνα ἐλθόντος καὶ κρούσαντος εὐθέως ἀνοίξωσιν αὐτῷ.
37 Happy are those servants whom, on his return, the Master will find watching. I tell you that he will make himself ready, and have them take their places at the table, and will come and serve them.
μακάριοι οἱ δοῦλοι ἐκεῖνοι οὓς ἐλθὼν ὁ κύριος εὑρήσει γρηγοροῦντας· ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι περιζώσεται καὶ ἀνακλινεῖ αὐτούς, καὶ παρελθὼν διακονήσει αὐτοῖς.
38 Whether it is late at night, or in the early morning that he comes, if he finds all as it should be, then happy are they.
κἂν κἂν (ἔλθῃ *k*) ἐν τῇ δευτέρᾳ (φυλακῇ *k*) (κἂν κἂν *N(k)O*) ἐν τῇ τρίτῃ φυλακῇ ἔλθῃ καὶ εὕρῃ οὕτως, μακάριοί εἰσιν (οἱ *ko*) (δοῦλοι *KO*) ἐκεῖνοι.
39 This you do know, that, had the owner of the house known at what time the thief was coming, he would have been on the watch, and would not have let his house be broken into.
Τοῦτο δὲ γινώσκετε ὅτι εἰ ᾔδει ὁ οἰκοδεσπότης ποίᾳ ὥρᾳ ὁ κλέπτης ἔρχεται, οὐκ (ἐγρηγόρησεν *KO*) (ἂν *K*) (καὶ *KO*) ἂν ἀφῆκεν (διορυχθῆναι *N(k)O*) τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ.
40 You must also prepare, for when you are least expecting him the Son of Man will come.”
καὶ ὑμεῖς (οὖν *K*) γίνεσθε ἕτοιμοι, ὅτι ᾗ ὥρᾳ οὐ δοκεῖτε ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἔρχεται.
41 “Master,” said Peter, “are you telling this parable with reference to us or to everyone?”
Εἶπεν δὲ (αὐτῷ *k*) ὁ Πέτρος· κύριε, πρὸς ἡμᾶς τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην λέγεις ἢ καὶ πρὸς πάντας;
42 “Who, then,” replied the Master, “is that trustworthy steward, the careful man, who will be placed by his master over his establishment, to give them their rations at the proper time?
(καὶ *no*) εἶπεν (δὲ *k*) ὁ κύριος· τίς ἄρα ἐστὶν ὁ πιστὸς οἰκονόμος (ὁ *N(k)O*) φρόνιμος ὃν καταστήσει ὁ κύριος ἐπὶ τῆς θεραπείας αὐτοῦ τοῦ διδόναι ἐν καιρῷ τὸ σιτομέτριον;
43 Happy will that servant be whom his master, when he comes home, will find doing this.
μακάριος ὁ δοῦλος ἐκεῖνος ὃν ἐλθὼν ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ εὑρήσει ποιοῦντα οὕτως.
44 His master, I tell you, will put him in charge of the whole of his property.
ἀληθῶς λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐπὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς ὑπάρχουσιν αὐτοῦ καταστήσει αὐτόν.
45 But should that servant say to himself ‘My master is a long time coming,’ and begin to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk,
Ἐὰν δὲ εἴπῃ ὁ δοῦλος ἐκεῖνος ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ· χρονίζει ὁ κύριός μου ἔρχεσθαι, καὶ ἄρξηται τύπτειν τοὺς παῖδας καὶ τὰς παιδίσκας ἐσθίειν τε καὶ πίνειν καὶ μεθύσκεσθαι,
46 that servant’s master will come on a day when he does not expect him, and at an hour of which he is unaware, and will flog him severely and assign him his place among the untrustworthy.
ἥξει ὁ κύριος τοῦ δούλου ἐκείνου ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ᾗ οὐ προσδοκᾷ καὶ ἐν ὥρᾳ ᾗ οὐ γινώσκει καὶ διχοτομήσει αὐτὸν καὶ τὸ μέρος αὐτοῦ μετὰ τῶν ἀπίστων θήσει.
47 The servant who knows his master’s wishes and yet does not prepare and act accordingly will receive many lashes;
Ἐκεῖνος δὲ ὁ δοῦλος ὁ γνοὺς τὸ θέλημα τοῦ κυρίου (αὐτοῦ *N(k)O*) καὶ μὴ ἑτοιμάσας (ἢ *N(k)O*) ποιήσας πρὸς τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ δαρήσεται πολλάς.
48 while one who does not know his master’s wishes, but acts so as to deserve a flogging, will receive but few. From everyone to whom much has been given much will be expected, and from the man to whom much has been entrusted the more will be demanded.
ὁ δὲ μὴ γνοὺς ποιήσας δὲ ἄξια πληγῶν δαρήσεται ὀλίγας. παντὶ δὲ ᾧ ἐδόθη πολύ, πολὺ ζητηθήσεται παρ᾽ αὐτοῦ· καὶ ᾧ παρέθεντο πολύ, περισσότερον αἰτήσουσιν αὐτόν.
49 I came to cast fire on the earth; and what more can I wish, if it is already kindled?
Πῦρ ἦλθον βαλεῖν (ἐπὶ *N(k)O*) τὴν γῆν καὶ τί θέλω εἰ ἤδη ἀνήφθη.
50 There is a baptism that I must undergo, and how great is my distress until it is over!
βάπτισμα δὲ ἔχω βαπτισθῆναι καὶ πῶς συνέχομαι ἕως (ὅτου *N(k)O*) τελεσθῇ.
51 Do you think that I am here to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but to cause division.
δοκεῖτε ὅτι εἰρήνην παρεγενόμην δοῦναι ἐν τῇ γῇ; οὐχί, λέγω ὑμῖν, ἀλλ᾽ ἢ διαμερισμόν.
52 For from this time, if there are five people in a house, they will be divided, three against two, and two against three.
ἔσονται γὰρ ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν πέντε ἐν ἑνὶ οἴκῳ διαμεμερισμένοι, τρεῖς ἐπὶ δυσὶν καὶ δύο ἐπὶ τρισὶν
53 Father will be opposed to son and son to father, mother to daughter and daughter to mother, mother-in-law to her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law to her mother-in-law.”
(διαμερισθήσονται, *N(k)O*) πατὴρ ἐπὶ υἱῷ καὶ υἱὸς ἐπὶ πατρί, μήτηρ ἐπὶ (τὴν *no*) (θυγατέρα *N(k)O*) καὶ θυγάτηρ ἐπὶ (τὴν *no*) (μητέρα, *N(k)O*) πενθερὰ ἐπὶ τὴν νύμφην αὐτῆς καὶ νύμφη ἐπὶ τὴν πενθεράν (αὐτῆς. *k*)
54 And to the people Jesus said, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once ‘There is a storm coming,’ and come it does.
Ἔλεγεν δὲ καὶ τοῖς ὄχλοις· ὅταν ἴδητε τὴν νεφέλην ἀνατέλλουσαν (ἐπὶ *N(k)O*) δυσμῶν, εὐθέως λέγετε (ὅτι *no*) ὄμβρος ἔρχεται, καὶ γίνεται οὕτως.
55 And when you see that the wind is in the south, you say ‘It will be burning hot,’ and so it proves.
καὶ ὅταν νότον πνέοντα, λέγετε ὅτι καύσων ἔσται, καὶ γίνεται.
56 Hypocrites! You know how to judge of the earth and the sky; how is it, then, that you cannot judge of this time?
ὑποκριταί, τὸ πρόσωπον τῆς γῆς καὶ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ οἴδατε δοκιμάζειν, τὸν καιρὸν δὲ τοῦτον πῶς οὐκ (οἴδατε *no*) (δοκιμάζειν; *N(k)O*)
57 Why don’t you yourselves decide what is right?
τί δὲ καὶ ἀφ᾽ ἑαυτῶν οὐ κρίνετε τὸ δίκαιον;
58 When, for instance, you are going with your opponent before a magistrate, on your way to the court do your best to be quit of him; otherwise he might drag you before the judge, then the judge will hand you over to the bailiff of the court, and the bailiff throw you into prison.
ὡς γὰρ ὑπάγεις μετὰ τοῦ ἀντιδίκου σου ἐπ᾽ ἄρχοντα, ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ δὸς ἐργασίαν ἀπηλλάχθαι ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ μήποτε μήποτε κατασύρῃ σε πρὸς τὸν κριτήν, καὶ ὁ κριτής σε (παραδώσει *N(k)O*) τῷ πράκτορι, καὶ ὁ πράκτωρ σε (βαλεῖ *N(k)(o)*) εἰς φυλακήν.
59 You will not, I tell you, come out until you have paid the very last cent.”
λέγω σοι· οὐ μὴ ἐξέλθῃς ἐκεῖθεν ἕως (οὗ *k*) καὶ (τὸ *N(k)O*) ἔσχατον λεπτὸν ἀποδῷς.
