Acts 10
1 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in the regiment known as the ‘Italian Regiment,’
さて、カイザリヤにコルネリオという名の人がいた。イタリヤ隊と呼ばれた部隊の百卒長で、
2 A religious man and one who reverenced God, with all his household. He was liberal in his charities to the people, and prayed to God constantly.
信心深く、家族一同と共に神を敬い、民に数々の施しをなし、絶えず神に祈をしていた。
3 One afternoon, about three o’clock, he distinctly saw in a vision an angel from God come to him, and call him by name.
ある日の午後三時ごろ、神の使が彼のところにきて、「コルネリオよ」と呼ぶのを、幻ではっきり見た。
4 Cornelius fixed his eyes on him and, in great alarm, said, “What is it, Lord?” “Your prayers and your charities,” the angel answered, “have been an acceptable offering to God.
彼は御使を見つめていたが、恐ろしくなって、「主よ、なんでございますか」と言った。すると御使が言った、「あなたの祈や施しは神のみ前にとどいて、おぼえられている。
5 And now, send messengers to Joppa and fetch a man called Simon, who is also known as Peter.
ついては今、ヨッパに人をやって、ペテロと呼ばれるシモンという人を招きなさい。
6 He is lodging with a tanner named Simon, who has a house near the sea.”
この人は、海べに家をもつ皮なめしシモンという者の客となっている」。
7 When the angel, who had spoken to him, had gone, Cornelius called two servants and a religious soldier, who was one of his constant attendants,
このお告げをした御使が立ち去ったのち、コルネリオは、僕ふたりと、部下の中で信心深い兵卒ひとりとを呼び、
8 and, after telling them the whole story, sent them to Joppa.
いっさいの事を説明して聞かせ、ヨッパへ送り出した。
9 On the next day, while these men were on their way, just as they were nearing the town, Peter went up on the housetop about midday to pray.
翌日、この三人が旅をつづけて町の近くにきたころ、ペテロは祈をするため屋上にのぼった。時は昼の十二時ごろであった。
10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat; but while it was being prepared, he fell into a trance,
彼は空腹をおぼえて、何か食べたいと思った。そして、人々が食事の用意をしている間に、夢心地になった。
11 and saw that the heavens were open, and that something like a great sail was descending, let down by its four corners towards the earth.
すると、天が開け、大きな布のような入れ物が、四すみをつるされて、地上に降りて来るのを見た。
12 In it were all kinds of quadrupeds, reptiles, and birds.
その中には、地上の四つ足や這うもの、また空の鳥など、各種の生きものがはいっていた。
13 Then he was aware of a voice which said – “Stand up, Peter, kill something, and eat.”
そして声が彼に聞えてきた、「ペテロよ。立って、それらをほふって食べなさい」。
14 “No, Lord, I cannot,” answered Peter, “for I have never eaten anything defiled and unclean.”
ペテロは言った、「主よ、それはできません。わたしは今までに、清くないもの、汚れたものは、何一つ食べたことがありません」。
15 Again he was aware of a voice which said – “What God has pronounced clean, do not regard as defiled.”
すると、声が二度目にかかってきた、「神がきよめたものを、清くないなどと言ってはならない」。
16 This happened three times, and then suddenly it was all taken up into the heavens.
こんなことが三度もあってから、その入れ物はすぐ天に引き上げられた。
17 While Peter was still perplexed as to the meaning of the vision that he had seen, the men sent by Cornelius, having enquired the way to Simon’s house, came up to the gate,
ペテロが、いま見た幻はなんの事だろうかと、ひとり思案にくれていると、ちょうどその時、コルネリオから送られた人たちが、シモンの家を尋ね当てて、その門口に立っていた。
18 and called out and asked if the Simon, who was also known as Peter, was lodging there.
そして声をかけて、「ペテロと呼ばれるシモンというかたが、こちらにお泊まりではございませんか」と尋ねた。
19 Peter was still pondering over the vision, when the Spirit said to him, “There are two men looking for you at this moment.
ペテロはなおも幻について、思いめぐらしていると、御霊が言った、「ごらんなさい、三人の人たちが、あなたを尋ねてきている。
20 Go down at once and do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.”
さあ、立って下に降り、ためらわないで、彼らと一緒に出かけるがよい。わたしが彼らをよこしたのである」。
21 Peter went down to the men and said, “I am the person you are looking for. What is your reason for coming?”
そこでペテロは、その人たちのところに降りて行って言った、「わたしがお尋ねのペテロです。どんなご用でおいでになったのですか」。
22 The men replied, “Our centurion, Cornelius, a pious man who reverences God and is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, has been instructed by a holy angel to send for you to his house, and to listen to what you have to say.”
彼らは答えた、「正しい人で、神を敬い、ユダヤの全国民に好感を持たれている百卒長コルネリオが、あなたを家に招いてお話を伺うようにとのお告げを、聖なる御使から受けましたので、参りました」。
23 So Peter invited them in and entertained them. The next day he lost no time in setting out with them, accompanied by some of the Lord’s followers from Joppa;
そこで、ペテロは、彼らを迎えて泊まらせた。翌日、ペテロは立って、彼らと連れだって出発した。ヨッパの兄弟たち数人も一緒に行った。
24 and the day following he entered Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them, and had invited his relatives and intimate friends to meet them.
その次の日に、一行はカイザリヤに着いた。コルネリオは親族や親しい友人たちを呼び集めて、待っていた。
25 So, when Peter entered the city, Cornelius met him, and, throwing himself at Peter’s feet, bowed to the ground.
ペテロがいよいよ到着すると、コルネリオは出迎えて、彼の足もとにひれ伏して拝した。
26 Peter, however, lifted him up, saying as he did so, “Stand up, I am only human like yourself.”
するとペテロは、彼を引き起して言った、「お立ちなさい。わたしも同じ人間です」。
27 Talking with him as he went, Peter entered the house, where he found a large gathering of people, to whom he said,
それから共に話しながら、へやにはいって行くと、そこには、すでに大ぜいの人が集まっていた。
28 “You are doubtless aware that it is forbidden for a Jew to be intimate with a foreigner, or even to enter his house; and yet God has shown me that I ought not to call anyone defiled or unclean.
ペテロは彼らに言った、「あなたがたが知っているとおり、ユダヤ人が他国の人と交際したり、出入りしたりすることは、禁じられています。ところが、神は、どんな人間をも清くないとか、汚れているとか言ってはならないと、わたしにお示しになりました。
29 That was why I came, when I was sent for, without raising any objection. And now I ask your reason for sending for me.”
お招きにあずかった時、少しもためらわずに参ったのは、そのためなのです。そこで伺いますが、どういうわけで、わたしを招いてくださったのですか」。
30 “Just three days ago this very hour,” Cornelius said, “I was in my house, saying the Afternoon Prayers, when a man in dazzling clothing suddenly stood before me.
これに対してコルネリオが答えた、「四日前、ちょうどこの時刻に、わたしが自宅で午後三時の祈をしていますと、突然、輝いた衣を着た人が、前に立って申しました、
31 ‘Cornelius,’ he said, ‘your prayer has been heard, and your charities have been accepted, by God.
『コルネリオよ、あなたの祈は聞きいれられ、あなたの施しは神のみ前におぼえられている。
32 Therefore send to Joppa, and invite the Simon, who is also known as Peter, to come here. He is lodging in the house of Simon the tanner, near the sea.’
そこでヨッパに人を送ってペテロと呼ばれるシモンを招きなさい。その人は皮なめしシモンの海沿いの家に泊まっている』。
33 Accordingly I sent to you at once, and you have been so good as to come. And now we are all here in the presence of God, to listen to all that you have been instructed by the Lord to say.”
それで、早速あなたをお呼びしたのです。ようこそおいで下さいました。今わたしたちは、主があなたにお告げになったことを残らず伺おうとして、みな神のみ前にまかり出ているのです」。
34 Then Peter began. “I see, beyond all doubt,” he said, “that God does not show partiality,
そこでペテロは口を開いて言った、「神は人をかたよりみないかたで、
35 but that in every nation he who reverences him and does what is right is acceptable to him.
神を敬い義を行う者はどの国民でも受けいれて下さることが、ほんとうによくわかってきました。
36 God has sent his message to the Israelites and told them, through Jesus Christ, the good news of peace – and Jesus is Lord of all!
あなたがたは、神がすべての者の主なるイエス・キリストによって平和の福音を宣べ伝えて、イスラエルの子らにお送り下さった御言をご存じでしょう。
37 You yourselves know the story which spread through all Judea, how, beginning form Galilee, after the baptism which John proclaimed –
それは、ヨハネがバプテスマを説いた後、ガリラヤから始まってユダヤ全土にひろまった福音を述べたものです。
38 the story, I mean, of Jesus of Nazareth, and how God consecrated him his Christ by enduing him with the Holy Spirit and with power; and how he went about doing good and curing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
神はナザレのイエスに聖霊と力とを注がれました。このイエスは、神が共におられるので、よい働きをしながら、また悪魔に押えつけられている人々をことごとくいやしながら、巡回されました。
39 We are ourselves, too, witnesses to all that he did in Judea and in Jerusalem; yet they put him to death by hanging him on a cross!
わたしたちは、イエスがこうしてユダヤ人の地やエルサレムでなさったすべてのことの証人であります。人々はこのイエスを木にかけて殺したのです。
40 This Jesus God raised on the third day, and enabled him to appear,
しかし神はイエスを三日目によみがえらせ、
41 not indeed to everyone, but to witnesses chosen beforehand by God – to us, who ate and drank with him after his resurrection from the dead.
全部の人々にではなかったが、わたしたち証人としてあらかじめ選ばれた者たちに現れるようにして下さいました。わたしたちは、イエスが死人の中から復活された後、共に飲食しました。
42 Further, God charged us to proclaim to the people, and solemnly affirm, that it is Jesus who has been appointed by God judge of the living and the dead.
それから、イエスご自身が生者と死者との審判者として神に定められたかたであることを、人々に宣べ伝え、またあかしするようにと、神はわたしたちにお命じになったのです。
43 To him it is that all the prophets bear witness, when they say that everyone who believes in him receives through his name forgiveness of sins.”
預言者たちもみな、イエスを信じる者はことごとく、その名によって罪のゆるしが受けられると、あかしをしています」。
44 Before Peter had finished saying these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all who were listening to the message.
ペテロがこれらの言葉をまだ語り終えないうちに、それを聞いていたみんなの人たちに、聖霊がくだった。
45 Those converts from Judaism, who had come with Peter, were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been bestowed even on the Gentiles;
割礼を受けている信者で、ペテロについてきた人たちは、異邦人たちにも聖霊の賜物が注がれたのを見て、驚いた。
46 for they heard them speaking in different languages and extolling God. At this Peter asked,
それは、彼らが異言を語って神をさんびしているのを聞いたからである。そこで、ペテロが言い出した、
47 “Can anyone refuse the water for the baptism of these people, now that they have received the Holy Spirit as we did ourselves?”
「この人たちがわたしたちと同じように聖霊を受けたからには、彼らに水でバプテスマを授けるのを、だれがこばみ得ようか」。
48 And he directed that they should be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ; after which they asked him to stay there a few days longer.
こう言って、ペテロはその人々に命じて、イエス・キリストの名によってバプテスマを受けさせた。それから、彼らはペテロに願って、なお数日のあいだ滞在してもらった。
