1 Corinthians 13
1 Though I speak in the ‘tongues’ of people, or even of angels, yet have not love, I have become mere echoing brass, or a clanging cymbal!
QUAND'anche io parlassi [tutti] i linguaggi degli uomini e degli angeli se non ho carità, divengo un rame risonante, ed un tintinnante cembalo.
2 Even though I have the gift of preaching, and fathom all hidden truths and all the depths of knowledge; even though I have such faith as might move mountains, yet have not love, I am nothing!
E quantunque io avessi profezia, e intendessi tutti i misteri, e tutta la scienza; e benchè io avessi tutta la fede, talchè io trasportassi i monti, se non ho carità, non son nulla.
3 Even though I dole my substance to the poor, even though I sacrifice my body in order to boast, yet have not love, it avails me nothing!
E quand'anche io spendessi in nudrire [i poveri] tutte le mie facoltà, e dessi il mio corpo ad essere arso; se non ho carità, quello niente mi giova.
4 Love is long-suffering, and kind; love is never envious, never boastful, never conceited, never behaves unbecomingly;
La carità è lenta all'ira, è benigna; la carità non invidia, non procede perversamente, non si gonfia.
5 love is never self-seeking, never provoked, never reckons up her wrongs;
Non opera disonestamente, non cerca le cose sue proprie, non s'inasprisce, non divisa il male.
6 love never rejoices at evil, but rejoices in the triumph of truth;
Non si rallegra dell'ingiustizia, ma congioisce della verità.
7 love bears with all things, ever trustful, ever hopeful, ever patient.
Scusa ogni cosa, crede ogni cosa, spera ogni cosa, sopporta ogni cosa.
8 Love never fails. But, whether it be the gift of preaching, it will end; whether it be the gift of ‘tongues,’ it will cease; whether it be knowledge, it, too, will vanish.
La carità non iscade giammai; ma le profezie saranno annullate, e le lingue cesseranno, e la scienza sarà annullata.
9 For our knowledge is incomplete, and our preaching is incomplete,
Poichè noi conosciamo in parte, ed in parte profetizziamo.
10 but, when the perfect has come, that which is incomplete will end.
Ma, quando la perfezione sarà venuta, allora quello [che è solo] in parte sarà annullato.
11 When I was a child, I talked as a child, I felt as a child, I reasoned as a child; now that I am a man, I have done with childish ways.
Quando io era fanciullo, io parlava come fanciullo, io avea senno da fanciullo, io ragionava come fanciullo; ma, quando son divenuto uomo, io ho dismesse le cose da fanciullo, come non essendo più d'alcuno uso.
12 As yet we see, in a mirror, dimly, but then – face to face! As yet my knowledge is incomplete, but then I will know in full, as I have been fully known.
Perciocchè noi veggiamo ora per ispecchio, in enimma; ma allora [vedremo] a faccia a faccia; ora conosco in parte, ma allora conoscerò come ancora sono stato conosciuto.
13 Meanwhile faith, hope, and love endure – these three, but the greatest of these is love.
Or queste tre cose durano al presente; fede, speranza, e carità; ma la maggiore di esse [è] la carità.
