and Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
17 So the whole number of generations from Abraham to David is fourteen; from David to the Exile to Babylon fourteen; and from the Exile to Babylon to the Christ fourteen.
So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David to the Babylonian exile fourteen generations, and from the Babylonian exile to the Christ fourteen generations.
18 This is how Jesus Christ was born: His mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but, before the marriage took place, she found herself to be pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was this way. For his mother Mary, who was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found having in her womb from the Holy Spirit.
19 Her husband, Joseph, was a just man and, since he did not want to disgrace her publicly, he resolved to put an end to their engagement privately.
But Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not wanting to expose her to public disgrace, intended to dismiss her privately.
20 He had been thinking this over, when an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. ‘Joseph, son of David,’ the angel said, ‘do not be afraid to take Mary for your wife, for her child has been conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit.
But while he considered these things, behold, an agent of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take Mary to be thy wife, for that which was begotten in her is from the Holy Spirit.
21 She will give birth to a son; name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’
And she will bring forth a son, and thou shall call his name JESUS, for he will save his people from their sins.
22 All this happened in fulfilment of these words of the Lord through the prophet, where he says –
Now all this has come to pass, so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, which says,
23 “The virgin will conceive and will give birth to a son, and they will give him the name Immanuel” – a word which means “God is with us.”
Behold, the virgin will have in her womb, and will bring forth a son. And they will call his name Immanuel, which is, being interpreted, God with us.
24 When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord had directed him.
And Joseph, being roused from his sleep, did as the agent of the Lord ordered him. And he took his wife,
25 He made Mary his wife, but they did not sleep together before the birth of her son; and to this son he gave the name Jesus.
and knew her not until she brought forth her son, the firstborn. And he called his name JESUS.
