Matthew 2
1 After the birth of Jesus at Bethlehem in Judea, in the reign of King Herod, some astrologers from the East arrived in Jerusalem, asking,
さて，イエスがヘロデ王の時代にユダヤのベツレヘムで生まれた時，見よ，東方からの賢者たちがエルサレムに来て，こう言った。
2 ‘Where is the newborn king of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him.’
「ユダヤ人の王としてお生まれになった方はどこにおられますか。わたしたちは東方でその方の星を見たので，その方を拝むために来たのです」。
3 When King Herod heard of this, he was much troubled, and so too was all Jerusalem.
それを聞いてヘロデ王は動揺し，彼と共に全エルサレムも動揺した。
4 He called together all the chief priests and teachers of the Law in the nation, and questioned them as to where the Christ was to be born.
彼は祭司長たちと民の律法学者たちとをすべて集め寄せ，キリストがどこで生まれることになっているのかを彼らに尋ねた。
5 ‘At Bethlehem in Judea,’ was their answer, ‘for it is said in the prophet –
彼らは彼に言った，「ユダヤのベツレヘムです。預言者を通してこのように書かれているからです。
6 “And you, Bethlehem in Judah’s land, are in no way least among the chief cities of Judah, for out of you will come a ruler – who will shepherd my people Israel.”’
『ユダの地のベツレヘムよ，あなたは決してユダの君主たちの間で最も小さいものではない。あなたから一人の統治者が出て，わたしの民イスラエルを牧するからだ』」。
7 Then Herod secretly sent for the astrologers. He found out from them the time of the appearance of the star.
そこで，ヘロデは賢者たちをひそかに呼んで，星が現われた時期を詳しく聞き出した。
8 Sending them to Bethlehem he said, ‘Go and make a careful search for the child. When you have found him, bring word back to me, so that I, too, can go and worship him.’
彼らをベツレヘムに遣わして言った，「行って，その幼子のことを念入りに調べよ。見つけたら，わたしに報告せよ。わたしも行って拝むためだ」。
9 The astrologers heard what the king had to say, and then continued their journey. The star which they had seen in the east led them on, until it reached and stood over the place where the child was.
王の言葉を聞いてから，彼らは出かけて行った。すると見よ，東方で見た星が彼らの先を行き，ついに幼子のいる場所の上にやって来て，止まった。
10 At the sight of the star they were filled with joy.
その星を見て，彼らは非常に大きな喜びをもって喜んだ。
11 Entering the house, they saw the child with his mother, Mary, and fell at his feet and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasure chests, and offered to the child presents of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
家の中に入ると，その母マリアと共にいる幼子を見，ひれ伏して彼を拝んだ。自分たちの宝箱を開いて，金と乳香と没薬を贈り物としてささげた。
12 But afterwards, having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their own country by another road.
夢でヘロデのもとに戻らないよう告げられたので，別の道を通って自分たちの国へ帰って行った。
13 After they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and seek refuge in Egypt; and stay there until I tell you to return, for Herod is about to search for the child, to put him to death.’
さて，彼らが去って行くと，見よ，主のみ使いが夢の中でヨセフに現われて，こう言った。「起きて，幼子とその母を連れてエジプトに逃げ，わたしが告げるまではそこにとどまりなさい。ヘロデがこの幼子を探し出して滅ぼそうとしているからだ」。
14 Joseph woke up, and taking the child and his mother by night, went into Egypt,
彼は起きて，夜のうちに幼子とその母を連れてエジプトに去って行った。
15 and there he stayed until Herod’s death. This was in fulfilment of these words of the Lord in the prophet, where he says – “Out of Egypt I called my Son.”
そしてヘロデが死ぬまでそこにいた。それは，預言者を通して主によって語られたことが果たされるためであった。こう言われていた。「エジプトから，わたしは自分の子を呼び出した」。
16 When Herod found out that the astrologers had tricked him, he flew into a rage. He sent and put to death all the boys in Bethlehem and the whole of that region, who were two years old or under, guided by the time which he had learned from the astrologers.
それからヘロデは，賢者たちにだまされたことを知って非常に腹を立て，人を遣わして，賢者たちから詳しく聞き出した時期に基づき，ベツレヘムとその周囲の全地域にいる二歳以下の男の子をすべて殺させた。
17 Then were fulfilled these words spoken in the prophet Jeremiah, where he says –
その時，預言者エレミヤによって語られたことが果たされた。こう言われていた。
18 “A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and mourning loudly; Rachel, weeping for her children, refusing all comfort for they were dead.”
「ラマで声が聞こえた，泣いて，大いに悲しむ悲嘆の声が。ラケルは自分の子供たちのために泣き，慰めてもらおうとしない。彼らがもういないからだ」。
19 But, on the death of Herod, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said,
しかし，ヘロデが死ぬと，見よ，主のみ使いがエジプトにいるヨセフに夢の中で現われて，こう言った。
20 ‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and go into the Land of Israel, for those who sought to take the child’s life are dead.’
「起きて，幼子とその母を連れてイスラエルの地に入りなさい。幼子の命を求めていた者たちは死んだからだ」。
21 He woke up, and taking the child and his mother, went into the Land of Israel.
彼は起きて，幼子とその母を連れてイスラエルの地に入った。
22 But, hearing that Archelaus had succeeded his father Herod as king of Judea, he was afraid to go back there; and having been warned in a dream, he went into the part of the country called Galilee.
しかしアルケラオスがその父ヘロデの代わりにユダを治めていると聞き，そこに行くのを恐れた。夢の中で告げられて，ガリラヤ地方に退いた。
23 There he settled in the town of Nazareth, in fulfilment of these words in the prophets – “He will be called a Nazarene.”
そして，ナザレと呼ばれる町に来て住んだ。預言者たちを通して，「彼はナザレ人と呼ばれるだろう」と語られたことが果たされるためであった。
