< Luke 5 >
1 Once, when the people were pressing round Jesus as they listened to God’s message, he happened to be standing by the shore of the Lake of Gennesaret, and saw two boats close to the shore.
AND it came to pass, as the multitude were thronging upon him, in order to hear the word of God, that he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret:
2 The fishermen had gone away from them and were washing the nets.
and he saw two vessels a-ground near the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and washing their nets.
3 So, getting into one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, Jesus asked him to push off a little way from the shore, and then sat down and taught the people from the boat.
Then he went on board one of the vessels, which was Simon’s, and desired him to put off a little from the land: and sitting down, he taught the multitudes out of the vessel.
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Push off into deep water, and throw out your nets for a haul.’
And when he ceased speaking, he said to Simon, Go off into deep water, and shoot your nets for a draught.
5 ‘We have been hard at work all night, Sir,’ answered Simon, ‘and have not caught anything, but, at your bidding, I will throw out the nets.’
And Simon answering, said unto him, Sir, we have been toiling all night, and have taken nothing: but at thy command I will shoot the net.
6 They did so, and enclosed such a great shoal of fish that their nets began to break.
And having done so, they inclosed a prodigious multitude of fishes; and their net was broken.
7 So they signalled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them; and they came and filled both the boats so full of fish that they were almost sinking.
And they made signals to their partners in the other vessels, that they should come to their assistance. And they came, and filled both the vessels, so that they were ready to founder.
8 When Simon Peter saw this, he threw himself down at Jesus’ knees, exclaiming, ‘Master, leave me, for I am a sinful man!’
Then Simon Peter seeing it, fell down on his knees before Jesus, saying, Go from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord!
9 For he and all who were with him were lost in amazement at the haul of fish which they had made;
For amazement had seized on him, and on all who were with him, at the draught of fishes which they had taken:
10 and so, too, were James and John, Zebedee’s sons, who were Simon’s partners. ‘Do not be afraid,’ Jesus said to Simon, ‘from today you will catch people.’
as also on James and John the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, Fear not: henceforward thou shalt catch men.
11 And, when they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything, and followed him.
And when they had brought their vessels on shore, they left all, and followed him.
12 On one occasion Jesus was staying in a town, when he saw a man who was covered with leprosy. When the leper saw Jesus, he threw himself on his face and implored his help, ‘Master, if only you are willing, you are able to make me clean.’
And it came to pass as he was just at one of the cities, behold, a man full of leprosy! and seeing Jesus, he fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
13 Stretching out his hand, Jesus touched him, saying as he did so, ‘I am willing; become clean.’ Instantly the leprosy left the man;
And he stretching out his hand touched him, saying, I will: be thou cleansed. And instantly the leprosy departed from him.
14 and then Jesus impressed on him that he was not to say a word to anyone, ‘but,’ he added, ‘set out and show yourself to the priest, and make the offerings for your cleansing, in the manner directed by Moses, as evidence of your cure.’
And he commanded him to tell no man: but go shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy purification, as Moses enjoined, for a testimony unto them.
15 However, the story about Jesus spread all the more, and great crowds came together to listen to him, and to be cured of their illnesses;
Now the discourse concerning him more and more spread through the country: and vast multitudes came together to hear him, and to be cured by him of their disorders.
16 but Jesus used to withdraw to lonely places and pray.
But he himself was in the desert for retirement and prayer.
17 On one of those days, when Jesus was teaching, some Pharisees and Doctors of the Law were sitting near by. (They had come from all the villages in Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was on Jesus, so that he could work cures.)
And on a certain day it happened that he was teaching, and there were sitting Pharisees, and doctors of the law, who had come from every town of Galilee, and Judea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord for healing them was exercised.
18 And there some men brought on a bed a man who was paralysed. They tried to get him in and lay him before Jesus;
And behold, men carried on a couch a man who was a paralytic; and sought to bring him into the house, and to place him before him.
19 but, finding no way of getting him in owing to the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him through the tiles, with his pallet, into the middle of the people and in front of Jesus.
And not discovering by what means they could introduce him, because of the crowd, they went up to the roof, and through the tiling let him down with his little couch into the midst, before Jesus.
20 When he saw their faith, Jesus said, ‘Friend, your sins have been forgiven you.’
And seeing their faith, he saith to him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.
21 The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees began debating about this. ‘Who is this man who speaks so blasphemously?’ they asked. ‘Who can forgive sins except God?’
And the scribes and Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this that speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?
22 When Jesus became aware of the way in which they were debating, he turned to them and exclaimed, ‘What are you debating with yourselves?
And Jesus knowing their reasoning, in reply said to them, Why do ye reason in your hearts?
23 Which is the easier? – to say “Your sins have been forgiven you”? Or to say “Get up, and walk”?
for which is the easier? to say, Thy sins are forgiven; or to say, Arise and walk?
24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins’ – he spoke to the paralysed man – ‘To you I say, Get up, and take up your pallet, and go to your home.’
But that ye may know that the Son of man hath authority upon earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the paralytic, ) I say to thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thy house.
25 Instantly the man stood up before their eyes, took up what he had been lying on, and went to his home, praising God.
And instantly he rose up before them, took up that on which he had lain, and went away to his house, giving glory to God.
26 The people, one and all, were lost in amazement, and praised God; and in great awe they said, ‘We have seen marvellous things today!’
And an extacy of admiration seized upon them all, and they glorified God; and they were filled with awe, saying, We have seen wondrously strange things to-day.
27 After this, Jesus went out; and he noticed a tax-gatherer, named Levi, sitting in the tax office, and said to him, ‘Follow me.’
And after these things he went out, and saw a farmer of the taxes, named Levi, sitting at the custom-house: and he said unto him, Follow me.
28 Levi left everything and got up and followed him.
And leaving all behind, he rose, and followed him.
29 And Levi gave a great banquet at his house, in honour of Jesus; and a large number of tax collectors and others were having dinner with them.
And Levi made him a great entertainment at his house and there was a great number of publicans and others, sitting at table with them.
30 The Pharisees and the teachers of the Law belonging to their party complained of this to the disciples of Jesus.
And their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?
31 In answer Jesus said, ‘It is not those who are well who need a doctor, but those who are ill.
And Jesus answering said unto them, They who are well, have no need of a physician: but they who have illness.
32 I have not come to call the religious, but the outcast, to repent.’
I came not to call righteous men, but sinners, to repentance.
33 ‘John’s disciples,’ they said to Jesus, ‘Often fast and say prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, while yours are eating and drinking!’
Then said they unto him, Why do the disciples of John observe frequent fasts, and make prayers; but thine are eating and drinking?
34 But Jesus answered them, ‘Can you make the groom’s friends fast while the groom is with them?
And he said unto them, Can you make the children of the bridechamber fast, as long as the bridegroom is with them?
35 But the days will come – a time when the groom will be taken away from them; and they will fast then, when those days come.’
But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, then shall they fast in those days.
36 Then, as an illustration, Jesus said to them, ‘No one ever tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old one; for, if they do, they will not only tear the new garment, but the piece from the new one will not match the old.
Then he spake a parable unto them, No man putteth a patch of new cloth on an old garment; but if otherwise, both the new makes a rent, and the patch from the new is not of a piece with the old.
37 And no one puts new wine into old wine-skins; for, if they do, the new wine will burst the skins, and the wine itself will run out, and the skins be lost.
And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; for if he doth, the new wine will burst the bottles, and it will itself be spilled, and the bottles be destroyed.
38 But new wine must be put into fresh skins.
But new wine should be put into new bottles; then both are preserved.
39 No one after drinking old wine wishes for new. “No,” they say, “the old is excellent.”’
And no man drinking old wine, immediately desires new: for he saith, The old is better.
