John 5
1 Sometime after this there was a Jewish Festival; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Après cela se trouvait la fête des Juifs, et Jésus monta à Jérusalem.
2 There is in Jerusalem, near the sheep-gate, a bath with five colonnades round it. It is called in Hebrew “Bethesda.”
Or il y a à Jérusalem une piscine probatique appelée en hébreu Bethsaïda, et ayant cinq portiques.
3 In these colonnades a large number of sick people were lying – blind, lame, and crippled.
Sous lesquels gisait une grande multitude de malades, d’aveugles, de boiteux, de paralytiques, attendant le mouvement des eaux.
Car un ange du Seigneur descendait en un certain temps dans la piscine, et l’eau s’agitait. Et celui qui le premier descendait dans la piscine après le mouvement de l’eau, était guéri de quelque maladie qu’il fût affligé.
5 One man who was there had been crippled for thirty-eight years.
Or il y avait là un homme qui était malade depuis trente-huit ans.
6 Jesus saw the man lying there, and, finding that he had been in this state a long time, said to him, ‘Do you wish to be cured?’
Lorsque Jésus le vit couché et qu’il sut qu’il était malade depuis longtemps, il lui dit: Veux-tu être guéri?
7 ‘I have no one, Sir,’ the sick man answered, ‘to put me into the bath when there is a troubling of the water, and, while I am getting to it, someone else steps down before me.’
Le malade lui répondit: Seigneur, je n’ai personne qui, lorsque l’eau est agitée, me jette dans la piscine; car, tandis que je viens, un autre descend avant moi.
8 ‘Stand up,’ said Jesus, ‘take up your mat, and walk.’
Jésus lui dit: Lève-toi, prends ton grabat et marche.
9 The man was cured immediately, and took up his mat and began walking.
Et aussitôt cet homme fut guéri, et il prit son grabat, et il marchait. Or c’était un jour de sabbat.
10 Now it was the Sabbath. So the religious authorities said to the man who had been cured, ‘This is the Sabbath; you must not carry your mat.’
Les Juifs donc disaient à celui qui avait été guéri: C’est un jour de sabbat, il ne t’est pas permis d’emporter ton grabat.
11 ‘The man who cured me,’ he answered, ‘said to me “Take up your mat and walk.”’
Il leur répondit: Celui qui m’a guéri m’a dit lui-même: Prends ton grabat et marche.
12 ‘Who was it,’ they asked, ‘that said to you “Take up your mat and walk”?’
Alors ils lui demandèrent: Qui est cet homme qui t’a dit: Prends ton grabat et marche?
13 But the man who had been restored did not know who it was; for Jesus had moved away, because there was a crowd there.
Mais celui qui avait été guéri ne savait qui il était; car Jésus s’était retiré de la foule assemblée en ce lieu.
14 Afterwards Jesus found the man in the Temple Courts, and said to him, ‘You are cured now; do not sin again, or something worse may happen to you.’
Jésus ensuite le trouva dans le temple, et lui dit: Voilà que tu es guéri, ne pèche plus, de peur qu’il ne t’arrive quelque chose de pis.
15 The man went away, and told the authorities that it was Jesus who had cured him.
Cet homme s’en alla et annonça aux Juifs que c’était Jésus qui l’avait guéri.
16 And that was why they began to persecute Jesus – because he did things of this kind on the Sabbath.
C’est pourquoi les Juifs persécutaient Jésus, parce qu’il faisait ces choses un jour de sabbat.
17 But Jesus replied, ‘My Father works to this very hour, and I work also.’
Mais Jésus leur répondit: Mon Père agit sans cesse, et moi j’agis aussi.
18 This made the authorities all the more eager to kill him, because not only was he doing away with the Sabbath, but he actually called God his own Father – putting himself on an equality with God.
Sur quoi les Juifs cherchaient encore plus à le faire mourir; parce que non seulement il violait le sabbat, mais qu’il disait que Dieu était son Père, se faisant ainsi égal à Dieu. Jésus répondant, leur dit:
19 So Jesus made this further reply, ‘In truth I tell you, the Son can do nothing of himself; he does only what he sees the Father doing; whatever the Father does, the Son does also.
En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, le Fils ne peut rien faire de lui-même, si ce n’est ce qu’il voit que le Père fait; car tout ce que le Père fait, le Fils le fait pareillement.
20 For the Father loves his Son, and shows him everything that he is doing; and he will show him still greater things – so that you will be filled with wonder.
Car le Père aime le Fils, et lui montre tout ce qu’il fait; et il lui montrera des œuvres encore plus grandes que celles-ci, de sorte que vous en serez vous-mêmes dans l’admiration.
21 For, just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he pleases.
Car, comme le Père réveille les morts et les rend à la vie, ainsi le Fils vivifie ceux qu’il veut.
22 The Father himself does not judge any one, but has entrusted the work of judging entirely to his Son,
Le Père ne juge personne, mais il a remis tout jugement à son Fils.
23 so that everyone may honour the Son, just as they honour the Father. The person who does not honour the Son fails to honour the Father who sent him.
Afin que tous honorent le Fils comme ils honorent le Père: qui n’honore point le Fils n’honore point le Père qui l’a envoyé.
24 In truth I tell you that the person who listens to my message and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and does not come under condemnation, but has already passed out of death into life. (aiōnios g166)
En vérité, en vérité, je vous dis que celui qui écoute ma parole et croit à celui qui m’a envoyé, a la vie éternelle et ne’ vient pas en jugement; mais il a passé de la mort à la vie. (aiōnios g166)
25 In truth I tell you that a time is coming, indeed it is already here, when the dead will listen to the voice of the Son of God, and when those who listen will live.
En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, vient une heure, et elle est déjà venue, où les morts entendront la voix du Fils de Dieu, et ceux qui l’auront entendue, vivront.
26 For, just as the Father has inherent life within him, so also he has granted to the Son to have inherent life within him;
Car, comme le Père a la vie en lui-même, ainsi il a donné au Fils d’avoir la vie en lui-même;
27 and, because he is Son of Man, he has also given him authority to act as judge.
Et il lui a donné le pouvoir de juger, parce qu’il est Fils de l’homme.
28 Do not wonder at this; for the time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice,
Ne vous en étonnez pas, parce que vient l’heure où tous ceux qui sont dans les sépulcres entendront la voix du Fils de Dieu,
29 and will come out – those who have done good rising to life, and those who have lived evil lives rising for condemnation.
Et en sortiront, ceux qui auront faille bien, pour ressusciter à la vie; mais ceux qui auront fait le mal, pour ressusciter à leur condamnation.
30 I can do nothing of myself; I judge as I am taught; and the judgment that I give is just, because my aim is not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
Je ne puis rien faire de moi-même. Selon que j’entends, je juge; et mon jugement est juste, parce que je ne cherche point ma volonté, mais la volonté de celui qui m’a envoyé.
31 ‘If I bear testimony to myself, my testimony is not trustworthy;
Si je rends témoignage de moi-même, mon témoignage n’est pas vrai.
32 it is another who bears testimony to me, and I know that the testimony which he bears to me is trustworthy.
C’est un autre qui rend témoignage de moi, et je sais que le témoignage qu’il rend de moi est véritable.
33 You have yourselves sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.
Vous, vous avez envoyé vers Jean, et il a rendu témoignage à la vérité.
34 But the testimony which I receive is not from people; I am saying this for your salvation.
Pour moi, ce n’est pas d’un homme que je reçois témoignage; mais je dis ceci afin que vous soyez sauvés.
35 He was the Lamp that was burning and shining, and you were ready to rejoice, for a time, in his light.
Il était la lampe ardente et luisante, et un moment vous avez voulu vous réjouir à sa lumière.
36 But the testimony which I have is of greater weight than John’s; for the work that the Father has given me to carry out – the work that I am doing – is in itself proof that the Father has sent me as his messenger.
Mais moi, j’ai un témoignage plus grand que celui de Jean. Car les œuvres que mon Père m’a données à accomplir, ces œuvres que je fais moi-même, rendent témoignage de moi, que le Père m’a envoyé.
37 The Father who has sent me has himself borne testimony to me. You have neither listened to his voice, not seen his form;
Et mon Père qui m’a envoyé a rendu lui-même témoignage de moi; vous n’avez jamais entendu sa voix ni vu sa figure;
38 and you have not taken his message home to your hearts, because you do not believe him whom he sent as his messenger.
Et vous n’avez pas sa parole demeurant en vous, parce que vous ne croyez pas à celui qu’il a envoyé.
39 You search the scriptures, because you think that you find in them immortal life; and, though it is those scriptures that bear testimony to me, (aiōnios g166)
Scrutez les Ecritures, puisque vous pensez avoir en elles la vie éternelle, car ce sont elles qui rendent témoignage de moi; (aiōnios g166)
40 you refuse to come to me to have life.
Mais vous ne voulez pas venir à moi pour avoir la vie.
41 ‘I do not receive honour from people,
Je n’accepte point une gloire venant des hommes.
42 but I know this of you, that you have not the love of God in your hearts.
Mais j’ai reconnu que vous n’avez pas l’amour de Dieu en vous.
43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him.
Je suis venu moi-même au nom de mon Père, et vous ne me recevez point; si un autre vient en son nom, vous le recevrez.
44 How can you believe in me, when you receive honour from one another and do not desire the honour which comes from the only God?
Comment pouvez-vous croire, vous qui recevez la gloire l’un de l’autre, et ne cherchez point la gloire qui vient de Dieu seul?
45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father; your accuser is Moses, on whom you have been resting your hopes.
Ne pensez pas que ce soit moi qui doive vous accuser devant le Père: celui qui vous accuse, c’est Moïse, en qui vous espérez.
46 For, had you believed Moses, you would have believed me, for it was of me that Moses wrote;
Car si vous croyiez à Moïse, vous croiriez sans doute à moi aussi, parce que c’est de moi qu’il a écrit.
47 but, if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my teaching?’
Mais si vous ne croyez point à ses écrits, comment croirez-vous à mes paroles?
