< Psalms 89 >
1 I will sing of the chesed ·loving-kindness· of Adonai forever. With my mouth, I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.
“A psalm of Ethan, the Ezrahite.” I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever; With my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations!
2 I indeed declare, “Love stands firm forever. You established the heavens. Your faithfulness is in them.”
For I know that thy mercy endureth for ever; Thou hast established thy truth like the heavens.
3 “I have made a covenant ·binding contract between two or more parties· with my chosen one, I have sworn to David [Beloved], my servant,
“I have made a covenant with my chosen; I have sworn to David, my servant:
4 ‘I will establish your offspring forever, and build up your throne to all generations.’” (Selah) ·contemplation with musical interlude·.
Thy family I will establish for ever, And build up thy throne to all generations.” (Pause)
5 The heavens will yadah ·extend hands in thankful praise· of your wonders, Adonai; your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones.
The heavens shall praise thy wonders, O LORD! And the assembly of the holy ones thy truth!
6 For who in the skies can be compared to Adonai? Who among the sons of the heavenly beings is like Adonai,
Who in the heavens can be compared to Jehovah? Who is like Jehovah among the sons of God?
7 a very awesome God in the council of the holy ones, to be feared above all those who are around him?
A God greatly to be feared in the assembly of the holy ones, And to be had in reverence above all who are around him?
8 Adonai, Elohim Tzva'ot [Yahweh, God Commander of heaven’s armies], who is a mighty one, like you? Yah, your faithfulness is around you.
O Jehovah, God of hosts! Who is mighty like thee, O Jehovah? And thy faithfulness is round about thee.
9 You rule the pride of the sea. When its waves rise up, you calm them.
Thou rulest the raging of the sea; When the waves thereof rise, thou stillest them!
10 You have broken Rahab in pieces, like one of the slain. You have scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.
Thou didst break Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain; Thou didst scatter thine enemies with thy mighty arm.
11 The heavens are yours. The earth also is yours; the world and its fullness. You have founded them.
The heavens are thine; thine also is the earth; The world and all that is therein, thou didst found them.
12 The north and the south, you have created them. Tabor and Hermon [Devoted to destruction] rejoice in your name.
The North and the South were created by thee; Tabor and Hermon rejoice in thy name.
13 You have a mighty arm. Your hand is strong, and your right hand is exalted.
Thine is a mighty arm; Strong is thy hand, and high thy right hand.
14 Righteousness and mishpat ·justice· are the foundation of your throne. Loving kindness and truth go before your face.
Justice and equity are the foundation of thy throne; Mercy and truth go before thy face.
15 Blessed are the people who learn to acclaim you. They walk in the light of your presence, Adonai.
Happy the people that know the trumpet's sound! They walk, O LORD! in the light of thy countenance;
16 In your name they rejoice all day. In your righteousness, they are exalted.
In thy name they daily rejoice, And in thy righteousness they glory!
17 For you are the glory of their strength. In your favor, our horn will be exalted.
For thou art the glory of their strength; Yea, through thy favor our horn exalteth itself!
18 For our shield belongs to Adonai; our king to haKadosh Isra'el [the Holy One of God prevails].
For from Jehovah is our shield, And from the Holy One of Israel is our king.
19 Then you spoke in vision to your saints, and said, “I have given strength to the warrior. I have exalted a young man from the people.
Once thou spakest in a vision to thy holy one, And saidst, —”I have laid help on one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen from the people;
20 I have found David [Beloved], my servant. I have anointed him with my holy oil,
I have found David, my servant; With my holy oil have I anointed him.
21 with whom my hand shall be established. My arm will also strengthen him.
With him shall my hand be established, And my arm shall strengthen him.
22 No enemy will tax him. No wicked man will oppress him.
The enemy shall not have power over him, Nor shall the unrighteous man oppress him.
23 I will beat down his adversaries before him, and strike those who hate him.
For I will beat down his foes before him, And overthrow them that hate him.
24 But my faithfulness and my chesed ·loving-kindness· will be with him. In my name, his horn will be exalted.
My faithfulness and mercy shall be with him, And through my name shall his horn be exalted.
25 I will set his hand also on the sea, and his right hand on the rivers.
I will extend his hand to the sea, And his right hand to the rivers.
26 He will call to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the rock of my yishu'ah ·salvation·!’
He shall say to me, 'Thou art my father, My God, and the rock of my salvation!'
27 I will also appoint him my firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.
I will also make him my first-born, Highest of the kings of the earth.
28 I will keep my chesed ·loving-kindness· for him forever more. My covenant ·binding contract between two or more parties· will stand firm with him.
My mercy I will continue to him for ever; My covenant with him shall be steadfast.
29 I will also make his offspring endure forever, and his throne as the days of heaven.
I will make his family to endure for ever; And his throne shall be as lasting as the heavens.
30 If his children forsake my Torah ·Teaching·, and don’t walk in my judgments;
Should his children forsake my law, And walk not in my statutes,
31 if they break my regulations, and don’t keep my mitzvot ·instructions·;
Should they break my commandments, And observe not my precepts,
32 then I will punish their rebellious breach of relationship with the rod, and their depravity (moral evil) with stripes.
I will punish their transgressions with a rod, And their iniquity with stripes.
33 But I will not completely take my chesed ·loving-kindness· from him, nor allow my faithfulness to fail.
But my kindness will I not withdraw from him, Nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.
34 I will not break my covenant ·binding contract between two or more parties·, nor alter what my lips have uttered.
I will not break my covenant, Nor alter what hath gone from my lips.
35 Once have I sworn by my holiness, I will not lie to David [Beloved].
Once have I sworn in my holiness, That I will not be false unto David.
36 His offspring will endure forever, his throne like the sun before me.
His family shall endure for ever, And his throne as the sun before me.
37 It will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky.” (Selah) ·contemplation with musical interlude·.
It shall be established for ever like the moon; Like the faithful witness in the sky.”
38 But you have rejected and spurned. You have been angry with your anointed.
But now thou forsakest and abhorrest, And art angry with, thine anointed.
39 You have renounced the covenant ·binding contract between two or more parties· of your servant. You have defiled his crown in the dust.
Thou hast made void the covenant with thy servant; Thou hast cast his crown to the ground.
40 You have broken down all his hedges. You have brought his strongholds to ruin.
Thou hast broken down all his hedges; Thou hast brought his strongholds to ruin.
41 All who pass by the way rob him. He has become a reproach to his neighbors.
All who pass by plunder him; He is a reproach to his neighbors.
42 You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries. You have made all of his enemies rejoice.
Thou hast lifted up the right hand of his enemies; Thou hast made all his adversaries to rejoice.
43 Yes, you turn back the edge of his sword, and haven’t supported him in battle.
Yea, thou hast turned the edge of his sword, And made him unable to stand in battle.
44 You have ended his splendor, and thrown his throne down to the ground.
Thou hast brought his glory to an end, And hast cast down his throne to the ground.
45 You have shortened the days of his youth. You have covered him with shame. (Selah) ·contemplation with musical interlude·.
Thou hast shortened the days of his youth; Thou hast covered him with shame.
46 How long, Adonai? Will you hide yourself forever? Will your wrath burn like fire?
How long, O LORD! wilt thou hide thyself for ever? How long shall thine anger burn like fire?
47 Remember how short my time is! For what vanity have you created all the children of men!
Remember how short is my life, To what frailty thou hast created all men!
48 What man is he who shall live and not see death, who shall deliver his soul from the power of Sheol ·Place of the dead·? (Selah) ·contemplation with musical interlude·. (Sheol )
What man liveth, and seeth not death? Who can deliver himself from the underworld? (Sheol )
49 Lord, where are your former chesed ·loving-kindnesses·, which you swore to David [Beloved] in your faithfulness?
Where, Lord, is thy former loving-kindness Which thou didst swear to David in thy truth?
50 Remember, Lord, the reproach of your servants, how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the mighty peoples,
Remember, O Lord! the reproach of thy servants, How I bear in my bosom the taunts of all the many nations,
51 With which your enemies have mocked, Adonai, with which they have mocked the footsteps of your anointed one.
With which thine enemies have reproached me, O LORD! With which they have reproached the footsteps of thine anointed!
52 Blessed be Adonai forever more. Amen v'Amen ·So be it and So be it·.
[Praised be Jehovah for ever! Amen, yea, amen!]
