Leviticus 16
1 Adonai spoke to Moses [Drawn out], after the death of the two sons of Aaron [Light-bringer], when they came near before Adonai, and died;
Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen post mortem duorum filiorum Aaron, quando offerentes ignem alienum interfecti sunt:
2 and Adonai said to Moses [Drawn out], “Tell Aaron [Light-bringer] your brother, not to come at all times into the Most Holy Place within the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark; lest he die: for I will appear in the cloud on the mercy seat.
et praecepit ei, dicens: Loquere ad Aaron fratrem tuum, ne omni tempore ingrediatur Sanctuarium, quod est intra velum coram propitiatorio quo tegitur arca, ut non moriatur (quia in nube apparebo super oraculum)
3 “Aaron [Light-bringer] shall come into the sanctuary with a young bull for a habitual sin ·miss the mark· offering, and a ram for a burnt offering.
nisi haec ante fecerit: Vitulum pro peccato offeret, et arietem in holocaustum.
4 He shall put on the holy linen coat. He shall have the linen breeches on his body, and shall put on the linen sash, and he shall be clothed with the linen turban. They are the holy garments. He shall bathe his body in water, and put them on.
Tunica linea vestietur, feminalibus lineis verenda celabit: accingetur zona linea, cidarim lineam imponet capiti: haec enim vestimenta sunt sancta: quibus cunctis, cum lotus fuerit, induetur.
5 He shall take from the congregation of the children of Israel [God prevails] two male goats for a habitual sin ·miss the mark· offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.
Suscipietque ab universa multitudine filiorum Israel duos hircos pro peccato, et unum arietem in holocaustum.
6 “Aaron [Light-bringer] shall offer the bull of the habitual sin ·miss the mark· offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house.
Cumque obtulerit vitulum, et oraverit pro se et pro domo sua,
7 He shall take the two goats, and set them before Adonai at the door of the Tent of Meeting.
duos hircos stare faciet coram Domino in ostio tabernaculi testimonii:
8 Aaron [Light-bringer] shall cast lots for the two goats; one lot for Adonai, and the other lot for the scapegoat.
mittensque super utrumque sortem, unam Domino, alteram capro emissario:
9 Aaron [Light-bringer] shall present the goat on which the lot fell for Adonai, and offer him for a habitual sin ·miss the mark· offering.
cuius exierit sors Domino, offeret illum pro peccato:
10 But the goat, on which the lot fell for the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before Adonai, to make atonement for him, to send him away for the scapegoat into the wilderness.
cuius autem in caprum emissarium, statuet eum vivum coram Domino, ut fundat preces super eo, et emittat eum in solitudinem.
11 “Aaron [Light-bringer] shall present the bull of the habitual sin ·miss the mark· offering, which is for himself, and shall make atonement for himself and for his house, and shall kill the bull of the habitual sin ·miss the mark· offering which is for himself.
His rite celebratis, offeret vitulum et rogans pro se et pro domo sua, immolabit eum:
12 He shall take a censer full of coals of fire from off the altar before Adonai, and two handfuls of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the veil:
assumptoque thuribulo, quod de prunis altaris impleverit, et hauriens manu compositum thymiama in incensum, ultra velum intrabit in Sancta:
13 and he shall put the incense on the fire before Adonai, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is on the testimony, so that he will not die.
ut positis super ignem aromatibus, nebula eorum et vapor operiat oraculum, quod est supra testimonium, et non moriatur.
14 He shall take some of the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it with his finger on the mercy seat on the east; and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.
Tollet quoque de sanguine vituli, et asperget digito septies contra propitiatorium ad orientem.
15 “Then he shall kill the goat of the habitual sin ·miss the mark· offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the veil, and do with his blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat.
Cumque mactaverit hircum pro peccato populi, inferet sanguinem eius intra velum, sicut praeceptum est de sanguine vituli, ut aspergat e regione oraculi,
16 He shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel [God prevails], and because of their rebellious breaches of relationships, even all their habitual sins ·missing the marks·; and so he shall do for the Tent of Meeting, that dwells with them in the middle of their uncleanness.
et expiet Sanctuarium ab immunditiis filiorum Israel, et a praevaricationibus eorum, cunctisque peccatis. Iuxta hunc ritum faciet tabernaculo testimonii, quod fixum est inter eos in medio sordium habitationis eorum.
17 No one shall be in the Tent of Meeting when he enters to make atonement in the Holy Place, until he comes out, and has made atonement for himself and for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel [God prevails].
Nullus hominum sit in tabernaculo quando pontifex Sanctuarium ingreditur, ut roget pro se et pro domo sua, et pro universo coetu Israel donec egrediatur.
18 “He shall go out to the altar that is before Adonai and make atonement for it, and shall take some of the bull’s blood, and some of the goat’s blood, and put it around on the horns of the altar.
Cum autem exierit ad altare quod coram Domino est, oret pro se, et sumptum sanguinem vituli atque hirci fundat super cornua eius per gyrum:
19 He shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and make it holy from the uncleanness of the children of Israel [God prevails].
aspergensque digito septies, expiet, et sanctificet illud ab immunditiis filiorum Israel.
20 “When he has finished atoning for the Holy Place, the Tent of Meeting, and the altar, he shall present the live goat.
Postquam emundaverit Sanctuarium, et tabernaculum, et altare, tunc offerat hircum viventem:
21 Aaron [Light-bringer] shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and yadah ·extend hands in confession· over him confessing all the depravities (moral evils) of the children of Israel [God prevails], and all their rebellious breaches of relationships, even all their habitual sins ·missing the marks·; and he shall put them on the head of the goat, and shall send him away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is in readiness.
et posita utraque manu super caput eius, confiteatur omnes iniquitates filiorum Israel, et universa delicta atque peccata eorum: quae imprecans capiti eius, emittet illum per hominem paratum, in desertum.
22 The goat shall carry all their depravities (moral evils) on himself to a solitary land, and he shall let the goat go in the wilderness.
Cumque portaverit hircus omnes iniquitates eorum in terram solitariam, et dimissus fuerit in deserto,
23 “Aaron [Light-bringer] shall come into the Tent of Meeting, and shall take off the linen garments, which he put on when he went into the Holy Place, and shall leave them there.
revertetur Aaron in tabernaculum testimonii, et depositis vestibus, quibus prius indutus erat cum intraret Sanctuarium, relictisque ibi,
24 Then he shall bathe himself in water in a holy place, and put on his garments, and come out and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people, and make atonement for himself and for the people.
lavabit carnem suam in loco sancto, indueturque vestibus suis. Et postquam egressus obtulerit holocaustum suum ac plebis, rogabit tam pro se quam pro populo:
25 The fat of the habitual sin ·miss the mark· offering he shall burn on the altar.
et adipem, qui oblatus est pro peccatis, adolebit super altare.
26 “He who lets the goat go for the scapegoat shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp.
ille vero, qui dimiserit caprum emissarium, lavabit vestimenta sua et corpus aqua, et sic ingredietur in castra.
27 The bull for the habitual sin ·miss the mark· offering, and the goat for the habitual sin ·miss the mark· offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the Holy Place, shall be carried outside the camp; and they shall burn their skins, their flesh, and their dung with fire.
Vitulum autem et hircum, qui pro peccato fuerant immolati, et quorum sanguis illatus est in Sanctuarium ut expiatio compleretur, asportabunt foras castra, et comburent igni tam pelles quam carnes eorum ac fimum:
28 He who burns them shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp.
et quicumque combusserit ea, lavabit vestimenta sua, et carnem aqua, et sic ingredietur in castra.
29 “It shall be a regulation to you forever: in the seventh month Ethanim ·Ever-flowing durable stream (in Hebrew), 7· or Tishrei ·[Beginning (in Babylonian)]·, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and shall do no kind of work, the native-born, or the stranger who lives as a foreigner among you:
Eritque vobis hoc legitimum sempiternum: Mense septimo, decima die mensis affligetis animas vestras, nullumque opus facietis, sive indigena, sive advena qui peregrinatur inter vos.
30 for on this day shall atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your habitual sins ·missing the marks· you shall be clean before Adonai.
In hac die expiatio erit vestri, atque mundatio ab omnibus peccatis vestris: coram Domino mundabimini.
31 It is a Shabath ·Intermission· of solemn rest to you, and you shall afflict your souls. It is a regulation forever.
sabbatum enim requietionis est, et affligetis animas vestras religione perpetua.
32 The priest, who is anointed and who is consecrated to be priest in his father’s place, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen garments, even the holy garments.
Expiabit autem sacerdos, qui unctus fuerit, et cuius manus initiatae sunt ut sacerdotio fungatur pro patre suo: indueturque stola linea et vestibus sanctis,
33 Then he shall make atonement for the Holy Sanctuary; and he shall make atonement for the Tent of Meeting and for the altar; and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly.
et expiabit Sanctuarium et tabernaculum testimonii atque altare, sacerdotes quoque et universum populum.
34 “This shall be an everlasting regulation for you, to make atonement for the children of Israel [God prevails] once in the year because of all their habitual sins ·missing the marks·.” It was done as Adonai enjoined Moses [Drawn out].
Eritque vobis hoc legitimum sempiternum, ut oretis pro filiis Israel, et pro cunctis peccatis eorum semel in anno. Fecit igitur sicut praeceperat Dominus Moysi.
