< John 18 >
1 When Yeshua [Salvation] had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered.
HAVING thus spoken, Jesus went out with his disciples beyond the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into which he went himself, and his disciples.
2 Now Judas [Praised], who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Yeshua [Salvation] often met there with his disciples.
Now Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place: for frequently had Jesus consorted with his disciples there.
3 Judas [Praised] then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees [Separated], came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
Then Judas having taken a band of soldiers, and the inferior officers of the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and arms.
4 Yeshua [Salvation] therefore, knowing all the things that were happening to him, went out, and said to them, “Who are you looking for?”
Jesus therefore, conscious of all things that were coming upon him, going forward, said to them, Whom are ye seeking?
5 They answered him, “Yeshua [Salvation] of Nazareth [Branch, Separated one].” Yeshua [Salvation] said to them, “I am he.” Judas [Praised] also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.
They answered him, Jesus the Nazarean. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. Then stood also Judas, who betrayed him, with these men.
6 When therefore he said to them, “Ena Na [I AM (the Living God)],” they went backward, and fell to the ground.
As he then spake to them, I am he, they retreated backward, and fell flat on the ground.
7 Again therefore he asked them, “Who are you looking for?” They said, “Yeshua [Salvation] of Nazareth [Branch, Separated one].”
Again therefore he demanded of them, Whom seek ye? Then they said, Jesus the Nazarean.
8 Yeshua [Salvation] answered, “I told you that Ena Na [I AM (the Living God)]. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,”
Jesus answered, I told you that I am he: if therefore ye are seeking me, permit these to go away:
9 that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, “Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none.”
that the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, That of those whom thou hast given me, I have not lost one of them.
10 Simeon Peter [Hearing Rock] therefore, having a machaira ·machete, small sword knife·, drew it, and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
Then Simon Peter having a sword, drew it, and struck a servant of the high-priest, and cut off his right ear. Now the servant’s name was Malchas.
11 Yeshua [Salvation] therefore said to Peter [Rock], “Put the machaira ·machete, small sword knife· into its sheath. The cup which haAbba ·the Father· has given me, shall I not surely drink it?”
Then said Jesus to Peter, Put up thy sword into the scabbard: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
12 So the detachment, the commanding officer, and the officers of the Jews [Praisers], seized Yeshua [Salvation] and bound him,
The band therefore, and the chief captain, and the inferior officers of the Jews, seized on Jesus, and bound him,
13 and led him to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas [Rock that hollows itself out], who was high priest that year.
and led him away to Annas first; for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was the high-priest of that year.
14 Now it was Caiaphas [Rock that hollows itself out] who advised the Jews [Praisers] that it was expedient that one man should perish for the people.
Now Caiaphas was the person who had given his advice to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should be destroyed instead of the people.
15 Simeon Peter [Hearing Rock] followed Yeshua [Salvation], as did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered in with Yeshua [Salvation] into the court of the high priest;
Now Simon Peter had followed Jesus, and another disciple: and that disciple was acquainted with the high-priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high-priest.
16 but Peter [Rock] was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought in Peter [Rock].
But Peter stood without at the door. Then that other disciple, who was acquainted with the high-priest, went out, and spoke to the porteress, and introduced Peter.
17 Then the maid who kept the door said to Peter [Rock], “Are you also one of this man’s disciples?” He said, “I am not.”
Then said the damsel who kept the door to Peter, Art not thou also one of the disciples of this man? He saith, I am not.
18 Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold. They were warming themselves. Peter [Rock] was with them, standing and warming himself.
Now the servants and inferior officers having made a fire, for it was cold, stood and warmed themselves: and there stood Peter with them, and warmed himself.
19 The high priest therefore asked Yeshua [Salvation] about his disciples, and about his teaching.
The high-priest then questioned Jesus concerning his disciples, and respecting his doctrine.
20 Yeshua [Salvation] answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where the Jews [Praisers] always meet. I said nothing in secret.
Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I always taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews resorted; and in secret have I spoken nothing.
21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them. Behold, these know the things which I said.”
Why dost thou question me? ask those who have heard me, what I have spoken to them: lo, they know what I said.
22 When he had said this, one of the officers standing by slapped Yeshua [Salvation] with his hand, saying, “Do you answer the high priest like that?”
As he was thus speaking, one of the servants who stood by him gave Jesus a slap on the face, saying, Dost thou answer the high-priest in this fashion?
23 Yeshua [Salvation] answered him, “If I have spoken evil, testify of the evil; but if well, why do you beat me?”
Jesus replied to him, If I have spoken in an improper manner, bear witness of the evil deed: but if properly, why strikest thou me?
24 Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas [Rock that hollows itself out], the high priest.
Now Annas had sent him bound to Caiaphas the high-priest.
25 Now Simeon Peter [Hearing Rock] was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, “You are not also one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.”
Meanwhile Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. Then said they to him, Art not thou also one of this man’s disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.
26 One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of him whose ear Peter [Rock] had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?”
One of the servants of the high-priest, being a kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, Did I not see thee in the garden with him?
27 Peter [Rock] therefore denied it again, and immediately the rooster crowed.
Then again Peter denied: and instantly the cock crew.
28 They led Yeshua [Salvation] therefore from Caiaphas [Rock that hollows itself out] into the Praetorium. It was early, and they themselves didn’t enter into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Pesac ·Passover· meal (Nissan 14).
Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium: and it was early: and they themselves went not into the praetorium, that they should not be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.
29 Pilate [Armed with javelin] therefore went out to them, and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”
Pilate then came out to them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?
30 They answered him, “If this man was not an evildoer, we wouldn’t have delivered him up to you.”
They answered and said to him, If this fellow had not been a malefactor, we should not have delivered him up to thee.
31 Pilate [Armed with javelin] therefore said to them, “Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.” Therefore the Jews [Praisers] said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,”
Pilate then said to them, Take him yourselves, and according to your own law judge him. The Jews then said to him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
32 that the word of Yeshua [Salvation] might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying by what kind of death he should die.
that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, intimating by what manner of death he should die.
33 Pilate [Armed with javelin] therefore entered again into the Praetorium, called Yeshua [Salvation], and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews [Praisers]?”
Pilate therefore entered again into the praetorium, and called Jesus, and said to him, Art thou the king of the Jews?
34 Yeshua [Salvation] answered him, “Do you say this by yourself, or did others tell you about me?”
Jesus answered him, Dost thou speak this from thyself, or did others speak to thee concerning me?
35 Pilate [Armed with javelin] answered, “I’m not a Jew [Praiser], am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What have you done?”
Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thy own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee to me: what hast thou done?
36 Yeshua [Salvation] answered, “My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I would not be delivered to the Jews [Praisers]. But now my Kingdom is not from here.”
Jesus replied, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom had been of this world, then would my servants have struggled hard, that I should not have been delivered up to the Jews: but now my kingdom is not from hence.
37 Pilate [Armed with javelin] therefore said to him, “Are you a king then?” Yeshua [Salvation] answered, “You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
Then said Pilate unto him. Art thou not a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. For this end I was born, and for this I came into the world, that I should be a witness for the truth. Every one who is of the truth heareth my voice.
38 Pilate [Armed with javelin] said to him, “What is truth?” When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews [Praisers], and said to them, “I find no basis for a charge against him.
Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And having thus spoken, he went out again unto the Jews and saith to them, I find no fault in him.
39 But you have a custom, that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Therefore do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews [Praisers]?”
But ye have a custom, that I should release to you one person at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
40 Then they all shouted again, saying, “Not this man, but Bar-Abba [Son Father]!” Now Bar-Abba [Son Father] was a robber.
Then again they all clamoured, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
