< Isaiah 53 >
1 Who has trusted our message? To whom has the arm of Adonai been revealed?
LORD, who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
2 For he grew up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground. He has no good looks or majesty. When we see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
For he grew up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nor special appearance that we should desire him.
3 He was despised, and rejected by men; a man of suffering, and acquainted with disease. He was despised as one from whom men hide their face; and we didn’t respect him.
He was despised, and rejected by people; a man of sorrows, and familiar with illness; and as one from whom people hide their face. He was despised, and we did not value him.
4 Surely he has borne our sickness, and carried our suffering; yet we considered him plagued, struck by God, and afflicted.
Surely he bore our diseases, and took our pains; yet we considered him stricken, and struck down by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our rebellious breaches of relationships. He was crushed for our depravities (moral evils). The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his stripes and wounds we are healed and made whole.
But he was pierced for our transgressions, and he was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray. Everyone has turned to his own way; and Adonai has laid on him את the depravity (moral evil) of us all.
All we like sheep have gone astray. Everyone has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed, yet when he was afflicted he didn’t open his mouth. As a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he didn’t open his mouth.
He was oppressed, yet when he was afflicted he did not open his mouth. He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he does not open his mouth.
8 After forcible arrest and sentencing, he was taken away; את and none of his generation protested his being cut off out of the land of the living for the rebellious breach of relationship of my people, who deserved the punishment themselves.
In his oppression his justice was taken away. Who will consider his generation? For his life was cut off from the earth. For the transgression of my people he was led to death.
9 They made his grave with את the wicked, את and with a rich man in his death; although he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.
And they assigned his grave with the wicked, yet with the rich at his death, though he had committed no sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth.
10 Yet it pleased Adonai to bruise him. He has caused him to suffer. To see if he would present himself as a fault incurring guilt offering. If he does, he will see his offspring, and he will prolong his days, and Adonai’s pleasure will prosper in his hand.
Yet the LORD was pleased to crush him and make him ill. Although his soul is made a reparation offering, he will see his offspring, he will prolong his days, and the desire of the LORD will succeed by his hand.
11 After this ordeal, he will see satisfaction “By his knowing [pain and sacrifice]. My righteous servant will justify many; for it is their depravities (moral evils) that he suffers.
After the suffering of his soul he will see light and be satisfied by his knowledge. The righteous one, my servant, will make many righteous, and he will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore will I give him a portion with the great, את and with the strong he will divide the spoils; because he exposed himself to death, and was counted with את the rebellious who break away from authority thus breaking relationship; while actually bearing the crime deserving peanlty, sin ·missing the goal· of many, and interceding for the rebellious who break away from authority thus breaking relationship.
Therefore I will divide him a portion with the great, and he will divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out his soul to death, and he was numbered with transgressors; yet he bore the sins of many, and made intercession for their transgressions.
