Genesis 18
1 Adonai appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre [Bitter, Fatness], as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day.
Or le Seigneur apparut dans la vallée de Mambré, à Abraham, assis à l’entrée de sa tente dans la grande chaleur du jour.
2 He lifted up his eyes and looked, and saw that three men stood opposite him. When he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself to the earth,
Car, lorsqu’il eut levé les yeux, trois hommes lui apparurent se tenant près de lui; et lorsqu’il les eut vus, il courut au-devant d’eux de l’entrée de sa tente, et il se prosterna en terre.
3 and said, “My lord, if now I have found chen ·grace· in your sight, please don’t go away from your servant.
Et il dit: Seigneur, si j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, ne passe pas au-delà de ton serviteur.
4 Now let a little water be fetched, wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.
J’apporterai un peu d’eau, et vous laverez vos pieds, et vous vous reposerez sous cet arbre.
5 I will get a morsel of bread so you can refresh your heart. After that you may go your way, now that you have come to your servant.” They said, “Very well, do as you have said.”
Je vous servirai aussi un peu de pain; et vous reprendrez vos forces, puis vous irez plus loin, car c’est pour cela que vous êtes venus vers votre serviteur. Ils lui répondirent: Fais ce que tu as dit.
6 Abraham [Father of a multitude] hurried into the tent to Sarah [Princess], and said, “Quickly prepare three seahs [23.1 qt; 21.9 L] of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes.”
Et Abraham alla en toute hâte à sa tente vers Sara, et lui dit: Pétris vite trois mesures de fleur de farine, et fais des pains cuits sous la cendre.
7 Abraham [Father of a multitude] ran to the herd, and fetched a tender and good calf, and gave it to the servant. He hurried to dress it.
Et lui-même courut au troupeau, et en prit un veau tendre et excellent; et il le donna à un serviteur qui se hâta et le fit cuire.
8 He took butter, milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them. He stood by them under the tree, and they ate.
Il prit aussi du beurre et du lait, et le veau qu’il avait fait cuire, et le mit devant eux; et lui-même se tenait debout près d’eux sous l’arbre.
9 They asked him, “Where is Sarah [Princess], your wife?” He said, “See, in the tent.”
Quand ils eurent mangé, ils lui demandèrent: Où est Sara ta femme? Il répondit: La voilà dans la tente.
10 He said, “I will certainly return to you when the season comes round. Behold, Sarah [Princess] your wife will have a son.” Sarah [Princess] sh'ma ·hear obey· in the tent door, which was behind him.
L’un d’eux dit: En retournant, je viendrai vers toi en ce temps-ci, vous vivant encore, et Sara ta femme aura un fils. Ce qu’ayant entendu, Sara rit derrière la porte de la tente.
11 Now Abraham [Father of a multitude] and Sarah [Princess] were old, well advanced in age. Sarah [Princess] had passed the age of childbearing.
Car ils étaient tous deux vieux et d’un âge fort avancé, et Sara n’avait plus ses mois.
12 Sarah [Princess] laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old will I have pleasure, my lord being old also?”
Elle rit en cachette, disant: Après que je suis devenue vieille, et que mon seigneur est un peu bien vieux, penserai-je au plaisir?
13 Adonai said to Abraham [Father of a multitude], “Why did Sarah [Princess] laugh, saying, ‘Will I really bear a child, yet I am old?’
Mais le Seigneur dit à Abraham: Pourquoi Sara a-t-elle ri, disant: Est-ce que vraiment je dois enfanter, moi vieille?
14 Is anything too hard for Adonai? At the set time I will return to you, when the season comes round, and Sarah [Princess] will have a son.”
Est-ce qu’à Dieu quelque chose est difficile? Selon ma parole, je reviendrai vers toi, en ce même temps, vous vivant encore, et Sara aura un fils.
15 Then Sarah [Princess] denied it, saying, “I didn’t laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”
Sara le nia, disant: Je n’ai pas ri; car elle était saisie de crainte. Mais le Seigneur: Il n’en est pas ainsi, dit-il; mais tu as ri.
16 The men rose up from there, and looked toward Sodom [Burning]. Abraham [Father of a multitude] went with them to see them on their way.
Lors donc que ces hommes furent partis de là, ils tournèrent les yeux vers Sodome; et Abraham allait avec eux, les reconduisant.
17 Adonai said, “Will I hide from Abraham [Father of a multitude] what I do,
Alors le Seigneur dit: Pourrai-je cacher à Abraham ce que je vais faire,
18 since Abraham [Father of a multitude] will surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed in him?
Puisqu’il doit être père d’une nation grande et très puissante, et que doivent être bénies en lui toutes les nations de la terre?
19 For I have known him, to the end that he may enjoin his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of Adonai, to do righteousness and right judgement; to the end that Adonai may bring on Abraham [Father of a multitude] that which he has spoken of him.”
Car je sais qu’il ordonnera à ses enfants et à sa maison après lui, de garder la voie du Seigneur, et de pratiquer l’équité et la justice, afin que le Seigneur accomplisse à cause d’Abraham tout ce qu’il lui a dit.
20 Adonai said, “Because the cry of Sodom [Burning] and Gomorrah [Rebellious people, Tyrants] is great, and because their habitual sin ·missing the mark· is very grievous,
Le Seigneur dit donc: La clameur de Sodome et de Gomorrhe s’est multipliée, et leur péché s’est agravé outre mesure,
21 I will go down now, and see whether their deeds are as bad as the reports which have come to me. If not, I will know.”
Je descendrai, et je verrai, si la clameur qui est venue jusqu’à moi, elles l’ont accomplie par leurs œuvres: s’il n’en est pas ainsi, que je le sache.
22 The men turned from there, and went toward Sodom [Burning], but Abraham [Father of a multitude] stood yet before Adonai.
Et ils partirent de là, et ils s’en allèrent vers Sodome; mais Abraham se tenait encore devant le Seigneur.
23 Abraham [Father of a multitude] came near, and said, “Will you consume the upright with the wicked?
Et s’approchant, il dit: Est-ce que vous perdrez le juste avec l’impie?
24 What if there are fifty upright within the city? Will you consume and not spare the place for the fifty upright who are in it?
S’il se trouve cinquante justes dans la ville, périront-ils avec les autres? et ne pardonnerez-vous pas à ce lieu à cause de ces cinquante justes, s’ils s’y trouvent?
25 Be it far from you to do things like that, to kill the upright with the wicked, so that the upright should be like the wicked. May that be far from you. Should not the Judge of all the earth do right judgement?”
Loin de vous de faire cela, de perdre le juste avec l’impie, en sorte que le juste soit traité comme l’impie; cela n’est pas de vous: vous qui jugez toute la terre, vous ne rendrez nullement ce jugement.
26 Adonai said, “If I find in Sodom [Burning] fifty upright within the city, then I will spare the whole place for their sake.”
Le Seigneur lui répondit: Si je trouve à Sodome cinquante justes, dans l’enceinte de la ville, je pardonnerai à tout ce lieu à cause d’eux.
27 Abraham [Father of a multitude] answered, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to 'Adonay [Lord], although I am dust and ashes.
Et reprenant. Abraham dit: Puisque j’ai déjà commencé, je parlerai à mon Seigneur, quoique je ne sois que poussière et cendre.
28 What if there will lack five of the fifty upright? Will you destroy all the city for lack of five?” He said, “I will not destroy it, if I find forty-five there.”
Et s’il y avait cinquante justes, moins cinq, détruiriez-vous, parce qu’il n’y en aurait que quarante-cinq, la ville entière? Et le Seigneur dit: Je ne la détruirai pas, si j’en trouve là quarante-cinq.
29 He spoke to him yet again, and said, “What if there are forty found there?” He said, “I will not do it for the forty’s sake.”
Et il lui parla de nouveau: Mais s’il s’en trouve là quarante, que ferez-vous? Dieu répondit: Je ne la frapperai pas, à cause des quarante.
30 He said, “Oh don’t let 'Adonay [Lord] be angry, and I will speak. What if there are thirty found there?” He said, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.”
Je vous prie, Seigneur, ajouta Abraham, ne vous fâchez point, si je parle encore: Et s’il s’en trouve là trente? Le Seigneur répondit: Je ne le ferai pas, si j’en trouve là trente.
31 He said, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to 'Adonay [Lord]. What if there are twenty found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the twenty’s sake.”
Puisque j’ai déjà commencé, dit encore Abraham, je parlerai à mon Seigneur: Et s’il s’y en trouvait vingt? Le Seigneur répondit: Je ne la détruirai pas, à cause des vingt.
32 He said, “Oh don’t let 'Adonay [Lord] be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the ten’s sake.”
Je vous conjure. Seigneur, reprit Abraham, ne vous irritez pas, si je parle encore une fois: Et s’il s’en trouve là dix? Et le Seigneur dit: Je ne la détruirai pas à cause des dix.
33 Adonai went his way, as soon as he had finished communing with Abraham [Father of a multitude], and Abraham [Father of a multitude] returned to his place.
Et le Seigneur s’en alla, après qu’il eut cessé de parler à Abraham, et Abraham retourna en sa demeure.
