Genesis 18
1 Adonai appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre [Bitter, Fatness], as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day.
Puis l'Eternel lui apparut dans les plaines de Mamré, comme il était assis à la porte de [sa] tente, pendant la chaleur du jour.
2 He lifted up his eyes and looked, and saw that three men stood opposite him. When he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself to the earth,
Car levant ses yeux, il regarda: et voici, trois hommes parurent devant lui, et les ayant aperçus, il courut au-devant d'eux de la porte de sa tente, et se prosterna en terre;
3 and said, “My lord, if now I have found chen ·grace· in your sight, please don’t go away from your servant.
Et il dit: Mon Seigneur, je te prie, si j'ai trouvé grâce devant tes yeux, ne passe point outre, je te prie, [et arrête-toi chez] ton serviteur.
4 Now let a little water be fetched, wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.
Qu'on prenne, je vous prie, un peu d'eau, et lavez vos pieds, et reposez-vous sous un arbre;
5 I will get a morsel of bread so you can refresh your heart. After that you may go your way, now that you have come to your servant.” They said, “Very well, do as you have said.”
Et j'apporterai une bouchée de pain pour fortifier votre cœur, après quoi vous passerez outre; car c'est pour cela que vous êtes venus vers votre serviteur. Et ils dirent: Fais ce que tu as dit.
6 Abraham [Father of a multitude] hurried into the tent to Sarah [Princess], and said, “Quickly prepare three seahs [23.1 qt; 21.9 L] of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes.”
Abraham donc s'en alla en hâte dans la tente vers Sara, et lui dit: Hâte-toi, [prends] trois mesures de fleur de farine, pétris-[les], et fais des gâteaux.
7 Abraham [Father of a multitude] ran to the herd, and fetched a tender and good calf, and gave it to the servant. He hurried to dress it.
Puis Abraham courut au troupeau, et prit un veau tendre et bon, lequel il donna à un serviteur, qui se hâta de l'apprêter.
8 He took butter, milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them. He stood by them under the tree, and they ate.
Ensuite il prit du beurre et du lait, et le veau qu'on avait apprêté, et le mit devant eux; et il se tint auprès d'eux sous l'arbre, et ils mangèrent.
9 They asked him, “Where is Sarah [Princess], your wife?” He said, “See, in the tent.”
Et ils lui dirent: Où est Sara ta femme? Et il répondit: La voilà dans la tente.
10 He said, “I will certainly return to you when the season comes round. Behold, Sarah [Princess] your wife will have a son.” Sarah [Princess] sh'ma ·hear obey· in the tent door, which was behind him.
Et [l'un d'entr'eux] dit: Je ne manquerai pas de retourner vers toi en ce même temps où nous sommes, et voici, Sara ta femme aura un fils. Et Sara l'écoutait à la porte de la tente qui était derrière lui.
11 Now Abraham [Father of a multitude] and Sarah [Princess] were old, well advanced in age. Sarah [Princess] had passed the age of childbearing.
Or Abraham et Sara étaient vieux, fort avancés en âge; et Sara n'avait plus ce que les femmes ont accoutumé d'avoir.
12 Sarah [Princess] laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old will I have pleasure, my lord being old also?”
Et Sara rit en soi-même, et dit: Etant vieille, et mon Seigneur étant fort âgé, aurai-je [cette] satisfaction?
13 Adonai said to Abraham [Father of a multitude], “Why did Sarah [Princess] laugh, saying, ‘Will I really bear a child, yet I am old?’
Et l'Eternel dit à Abraham: Pourquoi Sara a-t-elle ri, en disant: Serait-il vrai que j'aurais un enfant, étant vieille comme je suis?
14 Is anything too hard for Adonai? At the set time I will return to you, when the season comes round, and Sarah [Princess] will have a son.”
Y a-t-il quelque chose qui soit difficile à l'Eternel? Je retournerai vers toi en cette saison, en ce même temps où nous sommes, et Sara aura un fils.
15 Then Sarah [Princess] denied it, saying, “I didn’t laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”
Et Sara le nia, en disant: Je n'ai point ri; car elle eut peur. [Mais] il dit: Cela n'est pas; car tu as ri.
16 The men rose up from there, and looked toward Sodom [Burning]. Abraham [Father of a multitude] went with them to see them on their way.
Et ces hommes se levèrent de là, et regardèrent vers Sodome; et Abraham marchait avec eux pour les conduire.
17 Adonai said, “Will I hide from Abraham [Father of a multitude] what I do,
Et l'Eternel dit: Cacherai-je à Abraham ce que je m'en vais faire?
18 since Abraham [Father of a multitude] will surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed in him?
Puis qu'Abraham doit certainement devenir une nation grande et puissante, et que toutes les nations de la terre seront bénies en lui?
19 For I have known him, to the end that he may enjoin his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of Adonai, to do righteousness and right judgement; to the end that Adonai may bring on Abraham [Father of a multitude] that which he has spoken of him.”
Car je le connais, et [je sais] qu'il commandera à ses enfants, et à sa maison après lui, de garder la voie de l'Eternel, pour faire ce qui est juste, et droit; afin que l'Eternel fasse venir sur Abraham tout ce qu'il lui a dit.
20 Adonai said, “Because the cry of Sodom [Burning] and Gomorrah [Rebellious people, Tyrants] is great, and because their habitual sin ·missing the mark· is very grievous,
Et l'Eternel dit: Parce que le cri de Sodome et de Gomorrhe est augmenté, et que leur péché est fort aggravé;
21 I will go down now, and see whether their deeds are as bad as the reports which have come to me. If not, I will know.”
Je descendrai maintenant, et je verrai s'ils ont fait entièrement selon le cri qui est venu jusqu'à moi; et si cela n'est pas, je le saurai.
22 The men turned from there, and went toward Sodom [Burning], but Abraham [Father of a multitude] stood yet before Adonai.
Ces hommes donc partant de là allaient vers Sodome; mais Abraham se tint encore devant l'Eternel.
23 Abraham [Father of a multitude] came near, and said, “Will you consume the upright with the wicked?
Et Abraham s'approcha, et dit: Feras-tu périr le juste même avec le méchant?
24 What if there are fifty upright within the city? Will you consume and not spare the place for the fifty upright who are in it?
Peut-être y a-t-il cinquante justes dans la ville, les feras-tu périr aussi? Ne pardonneras-tu point à la ville, à cause des cinquante justes qui y [seront]?
25 Be it far from you to do things like that, to kill the upright with the wicked, so that the upright should be like the wicked. May that be far from you. Should not the Judge of all the earth do right judgement?”
Non il n'arrivera pas que tu fasses une telle chose, que tu fasses mourir le juste avec le méchant, et que le juste soit [traité] comme le méchant! Non tu ne le feras point. Celui qui juge toute la terre ne fera-t-il point justice?
26 Adonai said, “If I find in Sodom [Burning] fifty upright within the city, then I will spare the whole place for their sake.”
Et l'Eternel dit: Si je trouve en Sodome cinquante justes dans la ville, je pardonnerai à tout le lieu pour l'amour d'eux.
27 Abraham [Father of a multitude] answered, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to 'Adonay [Lord], although I am dust and ashes.
Et Abraham répondit, en disant: Voici, j'ai pris maintenant la hardiesse de parler au Seigneur, quoique je ne sois que poudre et que cendre.
28 What if there will lack five of the fifty upright? Will you destroy all the city for lack of five?” He said, “I will not destroy it, if I find forty-five there.”
Peut-être en manquera-t-il cinq des cinquante justes; détruiras-tu toute la ville pour ces cinq-là? Et il lui répondit: Je ne la détruirai point, si j'y en trouve quarante-cinq.
29 He spoke to him yet again, and said, “What if there are forty found there?” He said, “I will not do it for the forty’s sake.”
Et [Abraham] continua de lui parler, en disant: Peut-être s'y en trouvera-t-il quarante? Et il dit: Je ne la détruirai point pour l'amour des quarante.
30 He said, “Oh don’t let 'Adonay [Lord] be angry, and I will speak. What if there are thirty found there?” He said, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.”
Et Abraham dit: Je prie le Seigneur de ne s'irriter pas si je parle [encore]; peut-être s'en trouvera-t-il trente? Et il dit: Je ne la détruirai point, si j'y en trouve trente.
31 He said, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to 'Adonay [Lord]. What if there are twenty found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the twenty’s sake.”
Et Abraham dit: Voici maintenant, j'ai pris la hardiesse de parler au Seigneur: peut-être s'en trouvera-t-il vingt? Et il dit: Je ne la détruirai point pour l'amour des vingt.
32 He said, “Oh don’t let 'Adonay [Lord] be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the ten’s sake.”
Et [Abraham] dit: Je prie le Seigneur de ne s'irriter pas, je parlerai encore une seule fois; peut-être s'y en trouvera-t-il dix. Et il dit: Je ne la détruirai point pour l'amour des dix.
33 Adonai went his way, as soon as he had finished communing with Abraham [Father of a multitude], and Abraham [Father of a multitude] returned to his place.
Et l'Eternel s'en alla quand il eut achevé de parler avec Abraham; et Abraham s'en retourna en son lieu.
