Titus 1
1 Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Christ Jesus, for the faith of God's elect, and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness,
[Lähettäjä: ] Paavali, Jumalan palvelija ja Jeesuksen Kristuksen lähettiläs. Tehtäväni on auttaa Jumalan valitsemia ihmisiä uskoon. Opetan heille Jumalan totuutta, joka muuttaa kaiken.
2 in hope of everlasting life, which God, who cannot lie, promised from the most ancient times, (aiōnios g166)
Niin he voivat saada ikuisen elämän, jonka Jumala on heille luvannut jo ennen maailman luomista – eikä hän koskaan valehtele. (aiōnios g166)
3 but in his own seasons manifested his word through the preaching with which I was intrusted by the commandment of God our Saviour:
Saan kertoa kaikille tämän iloisen uutisen, jonka Jumala, Vapahtajamme, on nyt sopivaksi katsomanaan hetkenä ilmoittanut maailmalle. Minun hän on käskenyt levittää uutista kaikkialle.
4 to Titus, true child after the common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Saviour.
[Vastaanottaja: ] Tiitus, jota pidän kuin omana poikanani, koska uskomme samaan Herraan. Jumala, Isämme, ja Vapahtajamme Jeesus Kristus siunatkoon sinua ja antakoon sinulle rauhansa.
5 For this cause I left thee behind in Crete, that thou shouldst set in order the things that are wanting, and appoint elders in every city, as I directed thee;
Jätin sinut sinne Kreetaan, että auttaisit sikäläisiä seurakuntia kaikin mahdollisin tavoin. Pyysin, että nimittäisit eri kaupunkeihin seurakunnan johtajat, jotka noudattaisivat antamiani ohjeita.
6 if any one is without reproach, the husband of one wife, having believing children, that are not accused of dissoluteness, or unruly.
On tärkeää, että valitset arvossapidettyjä, hyviä miehiä, jotka ovat aviopuolisolleen uskollisia ja joiden lapset rakastavat Herraa, kunnioittavat vanhempiaan ja ovat hyvämaineisia.
7 For a bishop must be without reproach, as God's steward; not self-willed, not soon angry, not given to wine, not a striker, not greedy of base gain,
Seurakuntien johtajissa ei saa olla moitteen sijaa, koska he ovat Jumalan palvelijoita. Heidän ei sovi olla ylpeitä, kärsimättömiä, rahanahneita, juopottelevia eikä riitaisia.
8 but hospitable, a lover of what is good, discreet, just, holy, temperate,
Heidän on oltava vieraanvaraisia ja rakastettava kaikkea mikä on hyvää. Heidän on myös oltava ymmärtäväisiä ja oikeudenmukaisia miehiä, jotka elävät puhtaasti, ja kyettävä hillitsemään itsensä.
9 holding fast the sure word according to what he was taught, that he may be able by sound teaching both to exhort, and to refute the gainsayers.
Heidän on uskottava horjumatta heille opetettuun totuuteen ja pystyttävä opettamaan se edelleen muille. Heidän on kyettävä osoittamaan toisin ajatteleville, missä nämä ovat väärässä.
10 For there are many unruly vain talkers and deceivers, especially they of the circumcision;
Kaikki eivät näet halua totella Jumalan sanaa. Varsinkin monet niistä, joiden mielestä kristittyjen on noudatettava juutalaisten lakeja, johtavat ihmisiä puheillaan harhaan.
11 whose mouths must be stopped, since they overturn whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of base gain.
Siitä on tehtävä loppu. Kokonaisia perheitä on johdettu harhaan, pois Jumalan armosta. Väärät opettajat haluavat vain rahanne.
12 One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said: “The Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, slothful gluttons.”
Eräskin kreetalainen, heidän oma profeettansa, on sanonut: »Kaikki kreetalaiset ovat valehtelijoita. He ovat kuin laiskoja eläimiä, joiden ainoa pyrkimys on vatsansa täyttäminen.»
13 This testimony is true; for which cause rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,
Se on totta. Ole kristityille niin ankara kuin on tarpeen, että he pysyisivät lujina uskossa
14 not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.
ja sulkisivat korvansa juutalaisten tarinoilta ja totuudesta eksyneiden suostutteluilta.
15 To the pure all things are pure; but to the defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure, but both their mind and conscience are defiled.
Jos ihmisellä on puhdas sydän, hän näkee kaikessa hyvää ja puhdasta. Sellaisesta, jonka sydän on paha ja epäuskoinen, kaikki on pahaa: hänen likainen mielensä ja kapinoiva sydämensä heijastuvat kaikkeen, mitä hän näkee ja kuulee.
16 They profess that they know God, but by their works they deny him, being abominable and disobedient, and for every good work reprobate.
Hän voi sanoa tuntevansa Jumalan, mutta hänen elämänsä puhuu toista. Sellainen ihminen on inhottava ja tottelematon, eikä häneltä voi odottaa mitään hyvää.
