Romans 7
1 Know ye not, brethren, (for I am speaking to those who are acquainted with the Law, ) that the Law hath dominion over a man only as long as he liveth?
Ou bien ne savez-vous pas, frères (car je parle à des hommes qui connaissent la loi), que la loi domine sur l'homme tant qu'il vit?
2 For the married woman is bound by law to her husband while he liveth; but if the husband die, she is released from the law which bound her to him.
Car la femme qui a un mari est liée par la loi au mari tant qu'il vit; mais si le mari meurt, elle est libérée de la loi du mari.
3 So then, if while her husband is living she connect herself with another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband die, she is no longer bound by that law, so that she will not be an adulteress, though she connect herself with another man.
Si donc, du vivant de son mari, elle s'attache à un autre homme, on l'appelle adultère. Mais si le mari meurt, elle est libérée de la loi, de sorte qu'elle n'est pas adultère, bien qu'elle soit unie à un autre homme.
4 So then, my brethren, ye also were slain to the Law through the body of Christ, that ye might be connected with another, even with him who was raised from the dead, that we might bear fruit to God.
C'est pourquoi, mes frères, vous aussi, vous êtes morts à la loi par le corps du Christ, afin que vous soyez unis à un autre, à celui qui est ressuscité des morts, pour que nous produisions du fruit pour Dieu.
5 For when we were in the flesh, the affections of sins, which were through the Law, were working in our members to bear fruit unto death.
En effet, lorsque nous étions dans la chair, les passions du péché, qui se manifestaient par la loi, agissaient dans nos membres pour produire du fruit à la mort.
6 But now we are delivered from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, that we might serve in the new life of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the letter.
Mais maintenant, nous avons été déchargés de la loi, étant morts à ce en quoi nous étions tenus, de sorte que nous servons en nouveauté d'esprit, et non en ancienneté de lettre.
7 What then shall we say? Is the Law sin? God forbid! But I should not have known sin, except by the Law; for I should not have known sinful desire, unless the Law had said, “Thou shalt not covet.”
Que dirons-nous alors? La loi est-elle un péché? Qu'elle ne le soit jamais! Cependant, je n'aurais pas connu le péché si ce n'était par la loi. Car je n'aurais pas connu la convoitise si la loi n'avait dit: « Tu ne convoiteras pas. »
8 But sin, seizing the opportunity, wrought in me by means of the commandment all manner of sinful desire; for without the Law sin is dead.
Mais le péché, trouvant une occasion dans le commandement, a produit en moi toutes sortes de convoitises. Car sans la loi, le péché est mort.
9 And I, apart from the Law, was once alive; but when the commandment came, sin came to life again, and I died;
J'étais autrefois vivant sans la loi; mais, quand le commandement est venu, le péché s'est réveillé et je suis mort.
10 and the very commandment whose design was life, I found to issue in death.
Le commandement qui était pour la vie, je l'ai trouvé pour la mort;
11 For sin, seizing the opportunity, deceived me through the commandment, and through it slew me.
car le péché, trouvant une occasion dans le commandement, m'a séduit, et par lui m'a tué.
12 So that the Law is holy, and the commandment holy, and right, and good.
C'est pourquoi la loi est vraiment sainte, et le commandement saint, juste et bon.
13 Did then that which is good become death to me? Far be it! but sin; that it might become manifest as sin, causing death to me by means of that which is good; that sin by means of the commandment might become exceedingly sinful.
Ce qui est bon est-il donc devenu pour moi la mort? Qu'il ne le soit jamais! Mais le péché, afin qu'il se manifeste comme péché, produisait en moi la mort par ce qui est bon, afin que, par le commandement, le péché devînt un grand péché.
14 For we know that the Law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, a slave sold to sin.
Car nous savons que la loi est spirituelle, mais moi je suis charnel, vendu sous le péché.
15 For I know not what I do. For I do not what I would, but I do what I hate.
Car je ne comprends pas ce que je fais. Car je ne pratique pas ce que je désire faire; mais ce que je déteste, je le fais.
16 But if I do what I would not, I assent to the Law that it is good.
Mais si ce que je ne veux pas, je le fais, je consens à la loi qu'elle est bonne.
17 Now, however, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
Ainsi maintenant, ce n'est plus moi qui le fais, mais le péché qui habite en moi.
18 For I know that there dwelleth not in me, that is, in my flesh, any good thing; for to desire is present with me, but not to perform that which is good.
Car je sais qu'en moi, c'est-à-dire dans ma chair, n'habite aucun bien. Car le désir est présent en moi, mais je ne le trouve pas faisant ce qui est bon.
19 For the good that I would, I do not; but the evil which I would not, that I do.
Car le bien que je désire, je ne le fais pas; mais le mal que je ne désire pas, je le pratique.
20 But if I do what I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
Et si je fais ce que je ne veux pas, ce n'est plus moi qui le fais, c'est le péché qui habite en moi.
21 I find then that there is a law to me, that when I would do good, evil is present with me.
Je trouve donc la loi que, tandis que je désire faire le bien, le mal est présent.
22 For I delight in the Law of God, as to the inward man;
En effet, je prends plaisir à la loi de Dieu selon la personne intérieure,
23 but I perceive another law in my members warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
mais je vois dans mes membres une autre loi, qui combat la loi de mon esprit et me rend captif de la loi du péché qui est dans mes membres.
24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from the body of this death?
Quel misérable je suis! Qui me délivrera du corps de cette mort?
25 Thanks be to God, [[who hath delivered me]] through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then, I, the same person, with the mind serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.
Je rends grâce à Dieu par Jésus-Christ, notre Seigneur. Ainsi donc, par la pensée, je sers la loi de Dieu, mais par la chair, la loi du péché.
