1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave to him, to show to his servants what must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel to his servant John;
This is the revelation of Jesus Christ that God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John.
2 who bore witness of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, —of whatever he saw.
John testified about the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ, all the things that he saw.
3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of the prophecy, and keep the things written therein; for the time is at hand.
Blessed is the one who reads aloud this prophecy, and those who listen to the words of this prophecy and who obey what is written in it, because the time is near.
4 John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be to you, and peace, from him who is, and who was, and who is to come; and from the seven spirits which are before his throne;
John, to the seven churches in Asia: May grace be to you and peace from the one who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne,
5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the first-born of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him that loveth us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To the one who loves us and has released us from our sins by his blood—
6 and made us a kingdom, priests to God his Father, to him be the glory and the dominion for ever. Amen. (aiōn )
he has made us a kingdom, priests for his God and Father—to him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. (aiōn )
7 Behold, he cometh with the clouds, and every eye shall see him, and they who pierced him; and all the tribes of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
Look, he is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, including those who pierced him. All the tribes of the earth will mourn because of him. Yes, Amen.
8 I am the Alpha and the Omega, saith the Lord God, he who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.
“I am the alpha and the omega,” says the Lord God, “the one who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”
9 I John, your brother, and companion in the affliction and kingdom and endurance in Jesus, was in the isle that is called Patmos, on account of the word of God, and the testimony of Jesus.
I, John—your brother and the one who shares with you in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are in Jesus—was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony about Jesus.
10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day; and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet,
I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day. I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet.
11 saying: What thou seest, write in a book, and send it to the seven churches; to Ephesus, and to Smyrna, and to Pergamus, and to Thyatira, and to Sardes, and to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.
It said, “Write what you see in a book, and send it to the seven churches—to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamum, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.”
12 And I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me; and having turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks,
I turned around to see whose voice was speaking to me, and as I turned I saw seven golden lampstands.
13 and in the midst of the candlesticks one like to a son of man, clothed with a garment reaching down to the feet, and girded at the breasts with a golden girdle.
In the middle of the lampstands there was one like a son of man, wearing a long robe that reached down to his feet and a golden sash around his chest.
14 His head and his hairs were white as white wool, as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
His head and hair were as white as wool—as white as snow—and his eyes were like a flame of fire.
15 and his feet were like fine brass, as if burning in a furnace; and his voice was as the sound of many waters.
His feet were like polished bronze, like bronze that had been refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of many rushing waters.
16 And he had in his right hand seven stars; and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword; and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.
He had seven stars in his right hand, and a sword with two sharp edges was coming out of his mouth. His face was shining like the sun at its strongest.
17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead; and he laid his right hand on me, saying, Fear not; I am the first and the last,
When I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead man. He placed his right hand on me and said, “Do not be afraid. I am the first and the last,
18 and he that liveth; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive for evermore; and I have the keys of death and the underworld. (aiōn , Hadēs )
and the one who lives. I was dead, but look, I live forever! And I have the keys of death and of Hades. (aiōn , Hadēs )
19 Write therefore the things which thou sawest, and the things which are, and the things which shall be after these;
Therefore write down what you have seen, what is now, and what will take place after this.
20 the mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches; and the seven candlesticks are the seven churches.
As for the hidden meaning about the seven stars you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.”
