< Psalms 80 >
1 “For the leader of the music. Upon the Shushan-Eduth. A psalm of Asaph.” Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel! Thou who leadest Joseph like a flock, Thou who sittest between the cherubs, shine forth!
For the Chief Musician. To the tune of “The Lilies of the Covenant.” A Psalm by Asaph. Hear us, Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock, you who sit above the cherubim, shine out.
2 Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up thy strength, And come and save us!
Before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, stir up your might! Come to save us!
3 Bring us back, O God! And cause thy face to shine, that we may be saved!
Turn us again, God. Cause your face to shine, and we will be saved.
4 O LORD, God of hosts! How long wilt thou be angry against the prayer of thy people?
LORD God of Armies, how long will you be angry against the prayer of your people?
5 For thou causest them to eat the bread of tears, And givest them tears to drink, in full measure.
You have fed them with the bread of tears, and given them tears to drink in large measure.
6 Thou hast made us the object of strife to our neighbors, And our enemies hold us in derision.
You make us a source of contention to our neighbours. Our enemies laugh amongst themselves.
7 Bring us back, O God of hosts! And cause thy face to shine that we may be saved!
Turn us again, God of Armies. Cause your face to shine, and we will be saved.
8 Thou didst bring a vine out of Egypt; Thou didst expel the nations, and plant it.
You brought a vine out of Egypt. You drove out the nations, and planted it.
9 Thou didst prepare a place for it; It spread its roots, and filled the land.
You cleared the ground for it. It took deep root, and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shade, And its branches were like the cedars of God.
The mountains were covered with its shadow. Its boughs were like God’s cedars.
11 It sent out its boughs to the sea, And its branches to the river.
It sent out its branches to the sea, its shoots to the River.
12 Why hast thou now broken down its hedges, So that all who pass by do pluck from it?
Why have you broken down its walls, so that all those who pass by the way pluck it?
13 The boar from the wood doth waste it, And the wild beast of the forest doth devour it.
The boar out of the wood ravages it. The wild animals of the field feed on it.
14 O God of hosts! return, we beseech thee, Look down from heaven, and behold, And have regard to this vine!
Turn again, we beg you, God of Armies. Look down from heaven, and see, and visit this vine,
15 Protect what thy right hand planted; The branch which thou madest strong for thyself!
the stock which your right hand planted, the branch that you made strong for yourself.
16 It is burnt with fire; it is cut down; Under thy rebuke they perish.
It’s burnt with fire. It’s cut down. They perish at your rebuke.
17 May thy hand be over the man of thy right hand, The man whom thou madest strong for thyself!
Let your hand be on the man of your right hand, on the son of man whom you made strong for yourself.
18 So will we no more turn back from thee: Revive us, and upon thy name alone will we call!
So we will not turn away from you. Revive us, and we will call on your name.
19 Bring us back, O LORD, God of hosts! And cause thy face to shine, that we may he saved!
Turn us again, LORD God of Armies. Cause your face to shine, and we will be saved.
