< Psalms 59 >
1 “For the leader of the music. To the tune of “Do not destroy.” A psalm of David, when Saul sent, and they watched the house to kill him.” Deliver me from my enemies, O my God! Defend me from them that rise up against me!
For the leader. Al tashheth. Of David. A michtam, when Saul sent men to watch his house in order to kill him. Save me, O God, from my enemies; secure me from my assailants.
2 Deliver me from the doers of iniquity, And save me from men of blood!
Save me from those who do wrong, save me from the bloodthirsty.
3 For, lo! they lie in wait for my life; The mighty are gathered against me, Without any offence or fault of mine, O LORD!
For see! They lay ambush for me, strong men are banded against me not for sin or transgression of mine, for no guilt of mine, O Lord,
4 Without any offence of mine, they run and prepare themselves; Awake to help me, and behold!
they run and make ready. Awake! Come forth to meet me, and see!
5 Do thou, O Jehovah, God of hosts, God of Israel, Awake to punish all the nations! Show no mercy to any wicked transgressors! (Pause)
You, O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, awake! And punish the proud, every one; spare none of the traitors vile. (Selah)
6 Let them return at evening, Let them howl like dogs, And go round about the city!
At evening they come, and, howling like dogs, make their round in the city.
7 Behold! with their mouths they belch out malice; Swords are upon their lips; “For who,” say they, “will hear?”
Look at their venomous mouths, tongues like swords, they think no one hears them.
8 Yet thou, O LORD! wilt laugh at them; Thou wilt hold all the nations in derision!
But you, Lord, laugh at them, you mock all the insolent.
9 O my Strength! to thee will I look! For God is my defence;
My strength, I will sing to you, for God is my sure retreat.
10 My God will come to meet me with his mercy; God will cause me to look with joy upon my enemies.
My God with his love will meet me, and feast my eyes on my foes.
11 Slay them not, lest my people forget; Scatter them by thy power, and cast them down, O Lord, our shield!
Slay them not, lest my people forget, let your hosts keep them roaming and wandering.
12 The word of their lips is the sin of their mouth; Let them be overtaken in their pride, For the curses and the falsehood which they utter!
In their sinful speech snare them, O Lord; and may they be trapped in their pride, for the curses and lies that they utter.
13 Consume them in thy wrath; consume them that they be no more, That they may know that God ruleth in Jacob, Even to the ends of the earth! (Pause)
In your wrath make a clean end of them, that people, to the ends of the earth, may know that God rules in Jacob. (Selah)
14 Let them return at evening, Let them howl like dogs, And go round about the city!
At evening they come, and, howling like dogs, make their round in the city.
15 Let them wander about for food, When they have passed the night unsatisfied!
They roam about for a feast, and snarl, if they get not their fill.
16 But I will sing of thy power; Yea, in the morning will I sing aloud of thy mercy; For thou hast been my defence, My refuge in the day of my distress.
But I will sing of your might; I will ring out your love in the morning. For to me you have been a sure refuge, a retreat in the day of my trouble.
17 To thee, O my Strength! will I sing! For God is my defence; a God of mercy to me.
My strength, I will sing praise to you, for God is my sure retreat, my faithful God.
