< Psalms 44 >

1 “For the leader of the music. A psalm of the sons of Korah.” O God! we have heard with our ears, Our fathers have told us, What deeds thou didst in their days, In the days of old.
Unto the end, for the sons of Core, to give understanding. We have heard, O God, with our ears: our fathers have declared to us, The work, thou hast wrought in their days, and in the days of old.
2 With thine own hand didst thou drive out the nations, And plant our fathers; Thou didst destroy the nations, And cause our fathers to flourish.
Thy hand destroyed the Gentiles, and thou plantedst them: thou didst afflict the people and cast them out.
3 For not by their own swords did they gain possession of the land, Nor did their own arms give them victory; But thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance; For thou didst favor them!
For they got not the possession of the land by their own sword: neither did their own arm save them. But thy right hand and thy arm, and the light of thy countenance: because thou wast pleased with them.
4 Thou art my king, O God! O send deliverance to Jacob!
Thou art thyself my king and my God, who commandest the saving of Jacob.
5 Through thee we may cast down our enemies; Through thy name we may trample upon our adversaries!
Through thee we will push down our enemies with the horn: and through thy name we will despise them that rise up against us.
6 I trust not in my bow, Nor can my sword save me.
For I will not trust in my bow: neither shall my sword save me.
7 But it is thou only who savest us from our enemies, And puttest to shame those who hate us!
But thou hast saved us from them that afflict us: and hast put them to shame that hate us.
8 In God will we glory continually; Yea, we will praise thy name for ever! (Pause)
In God shall we glory all the day long: and in thy name we will give praise for ever.
9 Yet now thou hast cast us off, and put us to shame; Thou goest not forth with our armies.
But now thou hast cast us off, and put us to shame: and thou, O God, wilt not go out with our armies.
10 Thou makest us turn back from the enemy, And they who hate us make our goods their prey.
Thou hast made us turn our back to our enemies: and they that hated us plundered for themselves.
11 Thou makest us like sheep destined for food, And scatterest us among the nations.
Thou hast given us up like sheep to be eaten: thou hast scattered us among the nations.
12 Thou sellest thy people for nought, And increasest not thy wealth by their price.
Thou hast sold thy people for no price: and there was no reckoning in the exchange of them.
13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbors, A scorn and a derision to those who are around us.
Thou hast made us a reproach to our neighbours, a scoff and derision to them that are round about us.
14 Thou makest us a byword among the nations, And causest the people to shake their heads at us.
Thou hast made us a byword among the Gentiles: a shaking of the head among the people.
15 My ignominy is continually before me, And shame covereth my face,
All the day long my shame is before me: and the confusion of my face hath covered me,
16 On account of the voice of the scoffer and the reviler, And on account of the enemy and the avenger.
At the voice of him that reproacheth and detracteth me: at the face of the enemy and persecutor.
17 All this hath come upon us; Yet have we not forgotten thee, Nor have we been false to thy covenant.
All these things have come upon us, yet we have not forgotten thee: and we have not done wickedly in they covenant.
18 Our hearts, have not wandered from thee, Nor have our feet gone out of thy path;
And our heart hath not turned back: neither hast thou turned aside our steps from thy way.
19 Though thou hast crushed us in a land of jackals, And covered us with thick darkness.
For thou hast humbled us in the place of affliction: and the shadow of death hath covered us.
20 If we had forgotten the name of our God, Or stretched forth our hands to a strange God,
If we have forgotten the name of our God, and if we have spread forth our hands to a strange god:
21 Surely God would search it out; For he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
Shall not God search out these things: for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
22 But for thy sake we are killed all the day; We are counted as sheep for the slaughter.
Because for thy sake we are killed all the day long: we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.
23 Awake! why sleepest thou, O Lord? Arise! cast us not off for ever!
Arise, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, and cast us not off to the end.
24 Wherefore dost thou hide thy face, And forget our affliction and oppression?
Why turnest thou face away? and forgettest our want and our trouble?
25 Our soul is bowed down to the dust; Our body cleaveth to the earth.
For our soul is humbled down to the dust: our belly cleaveth to the earth.
26 Arise, O thou, our strength! And deliver us, for thy mercy's sake!
Arise, O Lord, help us and redeem us for thy name’s sake.
