Psalms 106
1 Praise ye the LORD! O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; For his mercy endureth for ever!
Hallelúja! Drottinn, þökk sé þér því að þú ert góður! Elska þín varir að eilífu.
2 Who can utter the mighty deeds of the LORD? Who can show forth all his praise?
Hver getur talið upp öll máttarverk Guðs og hver getur lofað hann eins og rétt er og skylt? Enginn!
3 Happy are they who have regard to justice, Who practise righteousness at all times!
Sæll er sá réttláti sem gerir nágrönnum sínum gott.
4 Remember me, O LORD! with the favor promised to thy people; O visit me with thy salvation!
Drottinn, þegar þú blessar og bjargar fólki þínu, minnstu þá einnig mín.
5 That I may see the prosperity of thy chosen, That I may rejoice in the joy of thy people, That I may glory with thine inheritance!
Gefðu mér hlut í velgengni þinna útvöldu, að fá að gleðjast með þeim og deila með þeim hjálp þinni.
6 We have sinned with our fathers; We have committed iniquity; we have done wickedly.
Bæði við og feður okkar höfum margvíslega syndgað.
7 Our fathers in Egypt did not regard thy wonders; They remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; But rebelled at the sea, the Red sea.
Máttarverk þín í Egyptalandi mátu þeir lítils og fljótlega gleymdu þeir góðverkum þínum og risu gegn þér við hafið hið rauða.
8 Yet he saved them for his own name's sake. That he might make his mighty power to be known.
En samt frelsaðir þú þá, hélst uppi heiðri nafns þíns og sýndir mátt þinn.
9 He rebuked the Red sea, and it was dried up, And he led them through the deep as through a desert.
Þú klaufst hafið, lagðir þurran veg um botn þess og leiddir þá þar í gegn.
10 He saved them from the hand of him that hated them, And redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.
Þannig frelsaðir þú þá frá óvinum þeirra.
11 The waters covered their enemies; There was not one of them left.
Síðan féll sjórinn aftur í farveg sinn og óvinir þeirra fórust – ekki einn komst af!
12 Then believed they his words, And sang his praise.
Þá loks trúðu þeir Drottni og sungu honum lofsöng.
13 But they soon forgot his deeds, And waited not for his counsel.
En þeir voru fljótir að gleyma honum á ný! Þeir treystu ekki orðum hans
14 They gave way to appetite in the wilderness, And tempted God in the desert;
en heimtuðu sífellt meira og meira og reyndu eins og þeir gátu á þolinmæði Guðs.
15 And he gave them their request, But sent upon them leanness.
Og hann lét að vilja þeirra, en þó ekki að öllu leyti.
16 They also envied Moses in the camp, And Aaron, the holy one of the LORD.
Þeir gerðu uppreisn gegn Móse og líka Aron, manninn sem Guð hafði valið til prests.
17 Then the earth opened, and swallowed up Dathan, And covered the company of Abiram,
Þá opnaðist jörðin og gleypti Datan og flokk Abírams.
18 And a fire was kindled in their company; The flames burned up the wicked.
Eldur féll af himni og eyddi illmennum þessum.
19 They made a calf in Horeb, And worshipped a molten image;
Þeir gerðu sér líkneski af nauti, sem étur gras,
20 They changed their God of glory Into the image of a grass-eating ox.
og tilbáðu það í stað hins dýrlega Guðs!
21 They forgot God, their saviour, Who had done such great things in Egypt,
Þannig óvirtu þeir Guð, frelsara sinn,
22 Such wonders in the land of Ham. Such terrible things at the Red sea.
sem gert hafði undur og tákn í Egyptalandi og við hafið rauða.
23 Then he said that he would destroy them; Had not Moses, his chosen, stood before him in the breach, To turn away his wrath, that he might not destroy them.
Þess vegna áformaði Guð að eyða þeim öllum. En Móse, hans útvaldi þjónn, tók sér stöðu milli fólksins og Guðs og bað hann að láta af reiði sinni og tortíma þeim ekki.
24 They also despised the pleasant land, And believed not his word;
Og ekki vildu þeir inn í fyrirheitna landið, þeir treystu ekki að Guð mundi vernda þá.
25 But murmured in their tents, And would not hearken to the voice of the LORD.
Þeir kvörtuðu í tjöldum sínum og fyrirlitu skipun hans.
26 Then he lifted up his hand against them, And swore that he would make them fall in the wilderness;
Þá ákvað hann að láta þá deyja í eyðimörkinni,
27 That he would overthrow their descendants among the nations, And scatter them in the lands.
tvístra afkomendum þeirra meðal þjóðanna og herleiða þá til annarra landa.
28 They also gave themselves to the worship of Baal-peor, And ate sacrifices offered to lifeless idols.
Og hjá Peór gengu forfeður okkar í lið með fylgjendum Baals og báru fram fórnir til dauðra skurðgoða.
29 Thus they provoked his anger by their practices, And a plague broke in upon them.
Það reitti Drottin til reiði og þess vegna braust út plága meðal þeirra.
30 Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment, And the plague was stayed.
Hún hélst þar til Pínehas gekk fram og refsaði þeim sem henni höfðu valdið.
31 And this was counted to him for righteousness, To all generations for ever.
Hans verður ætíð minnst fyrir það réttlætisverk.
32 They provoked him also at the waters of Meribah [[strife]], And evil befell Moses on their account.
Hjá Meríba reitti Ísrael Drottin aftur til reiði og olli Móse miklum vanda,
33 For they provoked his spirit, So that he spake inconsiderately with his lips.
– hann reiddist og talaði ógætileg orð.
34 They did not destroy the nations, As Jehovah had commanded them.
Og ekki útrýmdi Ísrael þjóðunum sem fyrir voru í landinu, eins og Guð hafði skipað þeim,
35 They mingled themselves with the peoples, And learned their practices.
heldur blönduðust þeir heiðingjunum og tóku upp ósiði þeirra.
36 They even worshipped their idols, Which became to them a snare.
Þeir færðu skurðgoðum þeirra fórnir og leiddust burt frá Guði.
37 Their sons and their daughters they sacrificed to demons,
Þeir fórnuðu jafnvel börnum sínum til illra anda –
38 And shed innocent blood, The blood of their own sons and daughters, Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; And the land was polluted with blood.
til hjáguða Kanverja – úthelltu saklausu blóði og vanhelguðu landið með morðum.
39 Thus they defiled themselves with their works, And played the harlot with their practices.
Þeir saurguðust af illverkum þessum, því að með hjáguðadýrkun sinni rufu þeir trúnað við Guð.
40 Then burned the anger of the LORD against his people, So that he abhorred his own inheritance.
Vegna alls þessa reiddist Drottinn Ísrael, lýð sínum, og fékk viðbjóð á honum,
41 And he gave them into the hand of the nations, And they who hated them ruled over them.
og lét hann heiðnar þjóðir drottna yfir honum.
42 Their enemies oppressed them, And they were bowed down under their hand.
Ísrael var stjórnað af óvinum sínum og þeir kúguðu hann.
43 Many times did he deliver them; But they provoked him by their devices, And they were brought low for their iniquities.
Aftur og aftur leysti hann þá undan okinu, en þeir héldu áfram að óhlýðnast honum, uns syndir þeirra komu þeim á kné.
44 Yet, when he heard their cries, He had regard to their affliction;
Samt bænheyrði hann þá og linaði þjáningar þeirra.
45 He remembered his covenant with them, And repented according to the greatness of his mercy,
Hann minntist loforðsins sem hann gaf þeim og aumkaðist yfir þá í elsku sinni,
46 And caused them to find pity Among all that carried them captive.
svo að jafnvel þeir sem kúguðu þá, sýndu þeim miskunn.
47 Save us, O Jehovah, our God! and gather us from among the nations, That we may give thanks to thy holy name, And glory in thy praise!
Ó, frelsaðu okkur, Drottinn Guð! Safnaðu okkur saman frá þjóðunum svo að við getum sameiginlega þakkað þér og lofað nafn þitt.
48 [Blessed be Jehovah, the God of Israel, From everlasting to everlasting! And let all the people say, Amen! Praise ye Jehovah!]
Lofaður sé Drottinn, Guð Ísraels, frá eilífð til eilífðar. Og allt fólkið segi: „Amen!“Hallelúja.
