Proverbs 31
1 The words given to King Lemuel; the prophecy which his mother taught him.
Paroles du roi Lemuel. Sentences par lesquelles sa mère l’instruisit.
2 What, O my son! and what, O son of my womb! Yea, what, O son of my vows! [[shall I say to thee?]]
Que te dirai-je, mon fils? Que te dirai-je, fils de mes entrailles? Que te dirai-je, mon fils, objet de mes vœux?
3 Give not thy strength to women, Nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings!
Ne livre pas ta vigueur aux femmes, Et tes voies à celles qui perdent les rois.
4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel! It is not for kings to drink wine, Nor for princes to desire strong drink;
Ce n’est point aux rois, Lemuel, Ce n’est point aux rois de boire du vin, Ni aux princes de rechercher des liqueurs fortes,
5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, And pervert the rights of any of the afflicted.
De peur qu’en buvant ils n’oublient la loi, Et ne méconnaissent les droits de tous les malheureux.
6 Give strong drink to him who is ready to perish, And wine to him that hath a heavy heart;
Donnez des liqueurs fortes à celui qui périt, Et du vin à celui qui a l’amertume dans l’âme;
7 Let him drink and forget his poverty, And remember his misery no more!
Qu’il boive et oublie sa pauvreté, Et qu’il ne se souvienne plus de ses peines.
8 Open thy mouth for the dumb, In the cause of every orphan!
Ouvre ta bouche pour le muet, Pour la cause de tous les délaissés.
9 Open thy mouth, judge righteously, And maintain the cause of the poor and needy!
Ouvre ta bouche, juge avec justice, Et défends le malheureux et l’indigent.
10 Who can find a capable woman? Her worth is far above pearls.
Qui peut trouver une femme vertueuse? Elle a bien plus de valeur que les perles.
11 The heart of her husband trusteth in her, And he is in no want of gain.
Le cœur de son mari a confiance en elle, Et les produits ne lui feront pas défaut.
12 She doeth him good, and not evil, All the days of her life.
Elle lui fait du bien, et non du mal, Tous les jours de sa vie.
13 She seeketh wool and flax, And worketh willingly with her hands.
Elle se procure de la laine et du lin, Et travaille d’une main joyeuse.
14 She is like the merchants' ships; She bringeth her food from afar.
Elle est comme un navire marchand, Elle amène son pain de loin.
15 She riseth while it is yet night, And giveth food to her family, And a task to her maidens.
Elle se lève lorsqu’il est encore nuit, Et elle donne la nourriture à sa maison Et la tâche à ses servantes.
16 She layeth a plan for a field, and buyeth it; With the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.
Elle pense à un champ, et elle l’acquiert; Du fruit de son travail elle plante une vigne.
17 She girdeth her loins with strength, And maketh strong her arms.
Elle ceint de force ses reins, Et elle affermit ses bras.
18 She perceiveth how pleasant is her gain, And her lamp is not extinguished in the night.
Elle sent que ce qu’elle gagne est bon; Sa lampe ne s’éteint point pendant la nuit.
19 She putteth forth her hands to the distaff, And her hands take hold of the spindle.
Elle met la main à la quenouille, Et ses doigts tiennent le fuseau.
20 She spreadeth out her hand to the poor, Yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.
Elle tend la main au malheureux, Elle tend la main à l’indigent.
21 She hath no fear for her household on account of the snow, For all her household are clothed with crimson.
Elle ne craint pas la neige pour sa maison, Car toute sa maison est vêtue de cramoisi.
22 She maketh for herself coverlets; Her clothing is of fine linen and purple.
Elle se fait des couvertures, Elle a des vêtements de fin lin et de pourpre.
23 Her husband is known in the gates, When he sitteth with the elders of the land.
Son mari est considéré aux portes, Lorsqu’il siège avec les anciens du pays.
24 She maketh linen garments and selleth them, And delivereth girdles to the merchant.
Elle fait des chemises, et les vend, Et elle livre des ceintures au marchand.
25 Strength and honor are her clothing; And she laugheth at the days to come.
Elle est revêtue de force et de gloire, Et elle se rit de l’avenir.
26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom, And kind instruction is upon her tongue.
Elle ouvre la bouche avec sagesse, Et des instructions aimables sont sur sa langue.
27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, And eateth not the bread of idleness.
Elle veille sur ce qui se passe dans sa maison, Et elle ne mange pas le pain de paresse.
28 Her children rise up, and extol her; Her husband, and praiseth her, [[saving, ]]
Ses fils se lèvent, et la disent heureuse; Son mari se lève, et lui donne des louanges:
29 “Many daughters have done, virtuously, But thou excellest them all.”
Plusieurs filles ont une conduite vertueuse; Mais toi, tu les surpasses toutes.
30 Grace is deceitful, and beauty vain; But the woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
La grâce est trompeuse, et la beauté est vaine; La femme qui craint l’Éternel est celle qui sera louée.
31 Give ye her of the fruit of her hands, And let her works praise her in the gates.
Récompensez-la du fruit de son travail, Et qu’aux portes ses œuvres la louent.
