Proverbs 19
1 Better is the poor man who walketh in his integrity, Than he who is of false lips and a fool.
যে মূর্খের ঠোঁট উচ্ছৃঙ্খল তার চেয়ে সেই দরিদ্রই ভালো যার জীবনযাত্রার ধরন অনিন্দনীয়।
2 Moreover, that the soul be without knowledge is not good, And he that hasteth with is feet stumbleth.
জ্ঞানবিহীন বাসনা ভালো নয়— হঠকারী পদযুগল আরও কত না বেশি পথ হারাবে!
3 The folly of man destroyeth his way, And then his heart fretteth against the LORD.
মানুষের নিজেদের মূর্খামিই তাদের সর্বনাশের দিকে ঠেলে দেয়, অথচ তাদের অন্তর সদাপ্রভুর বিরুদ্ধে ক্ষিপ্ত হয়ে ওঠে।
4 Wealth maketh many friends; But the poor is separated from his neighbor.
ধনসম্পদ অনেক বন্ধু আকর্ষণ করে, কিন্তু দরিদ্র লোকজনের বন্ধুরাও তাদের পরিত্যাগ করে।
5 A false witness shall not be unpunished, And he that speaketh lies shall not escape.
মিথ্যাসাক্ষী অদণ্ডিত থাকবে না, ও যে মিথ্যা কথার স্রোত বইয়ে দেয় সে নিষ্কৃতি পাবে না।
6 Many are they who caress the noble, And every one is the friend of him who giveth gifts.
অনেকেই শাসকের তোষামুদি করে, ও যিনি উপহার দান করেন সবাই তাঁর বন্ধু হয়।
7 All the brethren of the poor man hate him; How much more do his friends go far from him! He runneth after their words, —they are gone!
দরিদ্রদের সব আত্মীয়স্বজন যখন তাদের এড়িয়ে চলে— তখন তাদের বন্ধুরাও তো আরও বেশি করে তাদের কাছ থেকে দূরে সরে যাবে! যদিও দরিদ্রেরা অনুনয়-বিনয় করে তাদের পশ্চাদ্ধাবন করে, তাদের কিন্তু কোথাও খুঁজে পাওয়া যায় না।
8 He that getteth wisdom loveth himself; He that keepeth understanding shall find good.
যে জ্ঞানার্জন করে সে জীবন ভালোবাসে; যে বিচক্ষণতা পোষণ করে সে অচিরেই উন্নতি লাভ করবে।
9 A false witness shall not be unpunished, And he that speaketh lies shall perish.
মিথ্যাসাক্ষী অদণ্ডিত থাকবে না, ও যে মিথ্যা কথার স্রোত বইয়ে দেয় তার সর্বনাশ হবে।
10 Luxury is not seemly for a fool; Much less should a servant have rule over princes.
মূর্খের পক্ষে যখন বিলাসিতার জীবনযাপন করা বাঞ্ছনীয় নয়— তখন ক্রীতদাসের পক্ষে অধিপতিদের উপরে প্রভুত্ব করা আরও কত না মন্দ বিষয়।
11 A man of understanding is slow to anger; Yea, it is his glory to pass over an offence.
মানুষের প্রজ্ঞা ধৈর্য উৎপন্ন করে; অপরাধ মার্জনা করা তার পক্ষে গৌরবের বিষয়।
12 The wrath of a king is like the roaring of a lion; But his favor, like dew upon the grass.
রাজার ক্রোধ সিংহের গর্জনের মতো, কিন্তু তাঁর অনুগ্রহ ঘাসের উপরে পড়া শিশিরের মতো।
13 A foolish son is a calamity to his father, And the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.
মূর্খ সন্তান বাবার সর্বনাশের কারণ, ও কলহপ্রিয়া স্ত্রী ফাটা ছাদ থেকে একটানা পড়তে থাকা জলের সমতুল্য।
14 Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers; But a prudent wife is from the LORD.
বাড়িঘর ও ধনসম্পদ মা-বাবার কাছ থেকে উত্তরাধিকারসূত্রে পাওয়া যায়, কিন্তু বিচক্ষণ স্ত্রী সদাপ্রভুর কাছ থেকেই পাওয়া যায়।
15 Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep, And the idle person shall suffer hunger.
অলসতা অগাধ ঘুম নিয়ে আসে, ও অপারদর্শী মানুষ ক্ষুধার্তই থেকে যায়।
16 He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his life; But he that neglecteth his ways shall die.
যারা আজ্ঞা পালন করে তারা তাদের প্রাণরক্ষা করে, কিন্তু যারা তাদের জীবনযাত্রার ধরনকে উপেক্ষা করে তারা মারা যাবে।
17 He who hath pity on the poor lendeth to the LORD, And that which he giveth will he repay him.
যারা দরিদ্রদের প্রতি দয়া দেখায় তারা সদাপ্রভুকেই ঋণ দেয়, ও তারা যা করেছে সেজন্য সদাপ্রভু তাদের পুরস্কৃত করবেন।
18 Chasten thy son because there is hope, But let not thy soul desire to slay him.
তোমার সন্তানদের শাসন করো, কারণ এতে আশা আছে, তাদের মৃত্যুর জন্য দায়ী হোয়ো না।
19 A man of great wrath will suffer punishment; For if thou deliver him, yet must thou do it again.
উগ্রস্বভাব বিশিষ্ট মানুষকে অবশ্যই দণ্ড পেতে হবে; তাদের উদ্ধার করো, ও তোমাকে আবার তা করতে হবে।
20 Listen to counsel and receive instruction, That thou mayst be wise in thy latter years.
পরামর্শ শোনো ও শৃঙ্খলা গ্রহণ করো, ও শেষ পর্যন্ত তুমি জ্ঞানবানদের মধ্যে গণ্য হবে।
21 Many are the devices in the heart of a man; But the purpose of the LORD, that shall stand.
মানুষের অন্তরে অনেক পরিকল্পনা থাকে, কিন্তু সদাপ্রভুর অভীষ্টই প্রবল হয়।
22 The charm of a man is his kindness; And better is a poor man than a liar.
একজন মানুষ যা চায় তা হল অফুরান ভালোবাসা; মিথ্যাবাদী হওয়ার চেয়ে দরিদ্র হওয়া ভালো।
23 The fear of the LORD tendeth to life, And he that hath it shall abide satisfied; He shall not be visited with evil.
সদাপ্রভুর ভয় জীবনের দিকে নিয়ে যায়; তখন একজন মানুষ সন্তুষ্ট থাকে, আকস্মিক দুর্দশা তাকে স্পর্শ করতে পারে না।
24 The slothful man dippeth his hand into the dish: He doth not bring it back even to his mouth.
অলস তার হাত থালায় ডুবিয়ে রাখে; সে এতই অলস যে তা মুখেও তোলে না।
25 Strike the scoffer, and the simple will become prudent; Reprove a man of understanding, and he will discern knowledge.
বিদ্রুপকারীকে কশাঘাত করো, ও অনভিজ্ঞ লোকেরা বিচক্ষণতার শিক্ষা পাবে; বিচক্ষণদের ভর্ৎসনা করো, ও তারা জ্ঞানার্জন করবে।
26 The son that causeth shame and disgrace doeth violence to his father, And chaseth away his mother.
যারা তাদের বাবার সম্পদ লুট করে ও তাদের মাকে তাড়িয়ে দেয় তারা এমন এক সন্তান যে লজ্জা ও অপমান বয়ে আনে।
27 Cease, my son, to listen to the instruction That causeth thee to wander from the words of knowledge!
হে আমার বাছা, তুমি যদি শিক্ষা নেওয়া বন্ধ করে দাও, তবে তুমি জ্ঞানের বাক্য থেকে দূরে সরে যাবে।
28 A worthless witness scoffeth at justice, And the mouth of the wicked swalloweth down iniquity.
বিকৃতমনা সাক্ষী ন্যায়বিচারকে বিদ্রুপ করে, ও দুষ্টদের মুখ অমঙ্গল গ্রাস করে নেয়।
29 Punishments are prepared for scoffers, And stripes for the back of fools.
বিদ্রুপকারীদের জন্য শাস্তিবিধান তৈরি হয়, ও মূর্খদের পিঠের জন্য তৈরি হয় মারধর।
