Proverbs 16
1 To man belongeth the preparation of the heart; But the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.
A l'homme de former des plans en son cœur; mais à Dieu d'exaucer ce qu'exprime la langue.
2 All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes; But the LORD weigheth the spirit.
Toutes les voies d'un homme sont pures à ses yeux; mais l'Éternel pèse les cœurs.
3 Commit thy doings to the LORD, And thy purposes shall be established.
Repose-toi sur Dieu de tes affaires, et tes plans seront assurés.
4 The LORD hath ordained every thing for its end; Yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.
L'Éternel a fait toutes choses pour leur fin; ainsi, l'impie pour le jour du malheur.
5 Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD; From generation to generation he shall not be unpunished.
Tout orgueilleux est pour l'Éternel une abomination; en aucun temps il ne demeure impuni.
6 Through kindness and truth, iniquity is expiated; And, through the fear of the LORD, men depart from evil.
L'amour et la fidélité expient la faute, et la crainte de l'Éternel fait fuir le mal.
7 When a man's ways please the LORD, He maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.
Si l'Éternel est favorable à la voie d'un homme, Il réconcilie même ses ennemis avec lui.
8 Better is a little with righteousness, Than great revenues without right.
Mieux vaut peu avec la justice, qu'un gros revenu avec l'iniquité.
9 The heart of man deviseth his way, But the LORD establisheth his steps.
L'homme en son cœur se trace sa voie; c'est l'Éternel qui dirige sa marche.
10 A divine sentence is upon the lips of a king; His mouth transgresseth not in judgment.
Les lèvres du roi prononcent des oracles; et, quand il juge, sa bouche n'est point inique.
11 A just balance and scales are the appointment of the LORD; All the weights of the bag are his work.
Le poids et la balance justes viennent de l'Éternel; Il a fait toutes les pierres qu'on a dans sa bourse.
12 The doing of wickedness is an abomination to kings; For by righteousness is the throne established.
Les rois auront horreur de faire le mal; car par la justice un trône est affermi.
13 Righteous lips are the delight of kings, And they love him who speaketh right things.
Les bonnes grâces du roi seront pour les lèvres vraies, et celui qui parle sincèrement, aura son amour.
14 The wrath of a king is messengers of death; But a wise man will pacify it.
Colère de roi, messages de mort: aussi le sage la calmera.
15 In the light of the king's countenance is life, And his favor is a like a cloud bringing the latter rain.
Un regard riant du roi donne la vie, et sa faveur est comme un nuage pluvieux du printemps.
16 How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! Yea, to get understanding is rather to be chosen than silver.
Combien la possession de la sagesse vaut mieux que l'or! et que la possession de la sagesse est préférable à l'argent.
17 It is the highway of the upright to depart from evil; He that taketh heed to his way preserveth his life.
La voie des gens de bien, c'est de fuir le mal; il préserve sa vie celui qui surveille ses voies.
18 Pride goeth before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.
L'orgueil précède la ruine, et la présomption, la chute.
19 Better is it to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, Than to share the spoil with the proud.
Mieux vaut vivre humble avec les pauvres, que de partager le butin avec les superbes.
20 He who giveth heed to the word shall find good; And he who trusteth in the LORD, happy is he!
Qui dans les affaires agit sensément, trouve le bonheur; et heureux qui se confie dans l'Éternel!
21 The wise in heart shall be called intelligent, And sweetness of the lips increaseth learning.
L'homme au cœur sage est appelé sensé, et l'aménité des paroles avance l'instruction.
22 Understanding is a wellspring of life to him that hath it. And the chastisement of fools is their folly.
La prudence pour qui l'a est une source de vie; les insensés sont punis par leur propre folie.
23 The heart of the wise man instructeth his mouth, And addeth learning to his lips.
Le cœur du sage rend sa bouche sensée, et par ses discours avance l'instruction.
24 Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, Sweet to the taste, and health to the bones.
Les discours gracieux sont des rayons de miel, doux au cœur, restaurants pour le corps.
25 There is a way that seemeth right to a man, But the end thereof is the way to death.
Telle voie semble droite à l'homme; mais elle aboutit au chemin de la mort.
26 The hunger of the laborer laboreth for him; For his mouth urgeth him on.
La faim du travailleur travaille pour lui, car sa bouche lui en impose la charge.
27 A worthless man diggeth mischief, And on his lips there is, as it were, a burning fire.
L'homme dangereux prépare le malheur, et sur ses lèvres il y a comme un feu qui brûle.
28 A deceitful man stirreth up strife, And a whisperer separateth friends.
L'homme tortueux excite les divisions; et le rapporteur désunit les intimes.
29 A man of violence enticeth his neighbor, And leadeth him into a way which is not good.
L'homme qui veut nuire, séduit son prochain, et l'engage dans une voie qui n'est pas la bonne;
30 He who shutteth his eyes to devise fraud, He who compresseth his lips, hath accomplished mischief!
il ferme les yeux pour méditer la fraude, il serre les lèvres… il a consommé le crime.
31 The hoary head is a crown of glory, If it be found in the way of righteousness.
Les cheveux blancs sont une couronne d'honneur; c'est sur le chemin de la justice qu'on la trouve.
32 He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty; And he who ruleth his spirit, than he that taketh a city.
L'homme patient est supérieur au héros, et celui qui a l'empire de son âme, au preneur de villes.
33 The lot is cast into the lap; But the whole decision thereof is from the LORD.
On jette le sort dans le pan de la robe; mais sa décision vient de l'Éternel.
