Proverbs 13
1 A wise son listeneth to the instruction of his father; But a scoffer listeneth not to rebuke.
समझदार संतान अपने पिता की शिक्षा का पालन करती है, किंतु ठट्ठा करनेवाले के लिए फटकार भी प्रभावहीन होती है.
2 By the fruit of a man's mouth he shall eat good; But the appetite of transgressors shall be sated with violence.
मनुष्य अपनी बातों का ही प्रतिफल प्राप्त करता है, किंतु हिंसा ही विश्वासघाती का लक्ष्य होता है.
3 He who keepeth his mouth keepeth his life; But destruction shall be to him who openeth wide his lips.
जो कोई अपने मुख पर नियंत्रण रखता है, वह अपने जीवन को सुरक्षित रखता है, किंतु वह, जो बिना विचारे बक-बक करता रहता है, अपना ही विनाश आमंत्रित कर लेता है.
4 The appetite of the sluggard longeth, and hath nothing; But the appetite of the diligent is fully satisfied.
आलसी मात्र लालसा ही करता रह जाता है. किंतु उसे प्राप्त कुछ भी नहीं होता, जबकि परिश्रमी की इच्छा पूर्ण हो जाती है.
5 A righteous man hateth words of falsehood; But a wicked man causeth disgrace and shame.
धर्मी के लिए झूठ घृणित है, किंतु दुष्ट दुर्गंध तथा घृणा ही समेटता है.
6 Righteousness preserveth him who is upright in his way; But wickedness overthroweth the sinner.
जिसका चालचलन निर्दोष होता है, धार्मिकता उसकी सुरक्षा बन जाती है, किंतु पाप दुर्जन के समूल विनाश का कारण होता है.
7 There is who maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing, Who maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.
कोई तो धनाढ्य होने का प्रदर्शन करता है, किंतु वस्तुतः वह निर्धन होता है; अन्य ऐसा है, जो प्रदर्शित करता है कि वह निर्धन है, किंतु वस्तुतः वह है अत्यंत सम्पन्न!
8 A man's wealth is the ransom of his life; But the poor man heareth no threatenings.
धन किसी व्यक्ति के लिए छुटकारा हो सकता है, किंतु निर्धन पर यह स्थिति नहीं आती.
9 The light of the righteous shall rejoice; But the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
धर्मी आनन्दायी प्रखर ज्योति समान हैं, जबकि दुष्ट बुझे हुए दीपक समान.
10 By pride cometh only contention; But with the well-advised is wisdom.
अहंकार और कुछ नहीं, कलह को ही जन्म देता है, किंतु वे, जो परामर्श का चालचलन करते हैं, बुद्धिमान प्रमाणित होते हैं.
11 Wealth gotten by vanity will become small; But he who gathereth it into the hand increaseth it.
बेईमानी का धन शीघ्र ही समाप्त भी हो जाता है, किंतु परिश्रम से प्राप्त किया धन बढ़ता जाता है.
12 Hope deferred maketh the heart sick; But the desire accomplished is a tree of life.
आशा की वस्तु उपलब्ध न होने पर हृदय खिन्न हो जाता है, किंतु अभिलाषा की पूर्ति जीवन वृक्ष प्रमाणित होती है.
13 He that despiseth the word shall be destroyed; But he who revereth the commandment shall be rewarded.
वह, जो शिक्षा को तुच्छ दृष्टि से देखता है, स्वयं अपना विनाश आमंत्रित करता है, किंतु वह, जो आदेश का सम्मान करता है, उत्कृष्ट प्रतिफल प्राप्त करता है.
14 The instruction of the wise is a fountain of life; By it men escape from the snares of death.
बुद्धिमान की शिक्षा जीवन का सोता है, कि इससे मृत्यु के फन्दों से बचा जा सके.
15 A good understanding winneth favor; But the way of transgressors is hard.
सौहार्दपूर्ण संबंध सहज सुबुद्धि द्वारा स्थापित किए जाते हैं, किंतु विश्वासघाती की नीति उसी के विनाश का कारक होती है.
16 Every prudent man acteth with knowledge; But a fool spreadeth abroad his folly.
चतुर व्यक्ति के हर एक कार्य में ज्ञान झलकता है, किंतु मूर्ख अपनी मूर्खता ही उछालता रहता है.
17 A wicked messenger falleth into trouble; But a faithful ambassador is health.
कुटिल संदेशवाहक विपत्ति में जा पड़ता है, किंतु विश्वासयोग्य संदेशवाहक मेल-मिलाप करवा देता है.
18 Poverty and shame are for him who rejecteth instruction; But he that regardeth reproof shall come to honor.
निर्धनता और लज्जा, उसी के हाथ लगती हैं, जो शिक्षा की उपेक्षा करता है, किंतु सम्मानित वह होता है, जो ताड़ना स्वीकार करता है.
19 The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul; But it is an abomination to fools to depart from evil.
अभिलाषा की पूर्ति प्राणों में मधुरता का संचार करती है, किंतु बुराई का परित्याग मूर्ख को अप्रिय लगता है.
20 He who walketh with wise men shall be wise; But the companion of fools shall be destroyed.
वह, जो ज्ञानवान की संगति में रहता है, ज्ञानवान हो जाता है, किंतु मूर्खों के साथियों को हानि का सामना करना होगा.
21 Calamity pursueth the wicked; But the righteous is rewarded with good.
विपत्ति पापियों के पीछे लगी रहती है, किंतु धर्मी का प्रतिफल होता है कल्याण.
22 The good man leaveth his substance to his children's children; But the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.
सज्जन संतान की संतान के लिए धन छोड़ जाता है, किंतु पापियों की निधि धर्मी को प्राप्त होती है.
23 There is much food from the fallow-ground of the poor; But there is who is brought low for want of uprightness.
यह संभव है कि साधारण किसान की भूमि उत्तम उपज लाए, किंतु अन्यायी उसे हड़प लेता है.
24 He that spareth the rod hateth his son; But he who loveth him chasteneth him early.
जो पिता अपने पुत्र को दंड नहीं देता, उसे अपने पुत्र से प्रेम नहीं है, किंतु जिसे अपने पुत्र से प्रेम है, वह बड़ी सावधानीपूर्वक उसे अनुशासन में रखता है.
25 The righteous man eateth to the satisfying of his desire; But the stomach of the wicked suffereth want.
धर्मी को उसकी भूख मिटाने के लिए पर्याप्त भोजन रहता है, किंतु दुष्ट सदैव अतृप्त ही बने रहते हैं.
