Matthew 6
1 But take heed that ye do not your righteousness before men, to be seen by them; otherwise ye have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.
« Prenez garde de ne pas faire votre charité devant les hommes, pour être vus d'eux, sinon vous n'aurez aucune récompense de votre Père qui est dans les cieux.
2 Therefore when thou doest alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Truly do I say to you, They have received their reward.
Ainsi, lorsque vous faites des actes de miséricorde, ne sonnez pas de la trompette devant vous, comme le font les hypocrites dans les synagogues et dans les rues, afin de tirer gloire des hommes. Je vous le dis en toute certitude, ils ont reçu leur récompense.
3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth;
Mais quand tu fais des œuvres de miséricorde, ne laisse pas ta main gauche savoir ce que fait ta main droite,
4 that thine alms may be in secret; and thy Father, who seeth in secret, will reward thee.
afin que tes œuvres de miséricorde soient dans le secret; alors ton Père, qui voit dans le secret, te récompensera ouvertement.
5 And when ye pray, ye shall not be as the hypocrites are; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Truly do I say to you, They have received their reward.
« Quand vous priez, vous ne serez pas comme les hypocrites, qui aiment à se tenir debout pour prier dans les synagogues et aux coins des rues, afin d'être vus des hommes. En vérité, je vous le dis, ils ont reçu leur récompense.
6 But do thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and, when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father, who seeth in secret, will reward thee.
Mais toi, quand tu pries, entre dans ta chambre intérieure, et, ayant fermé ta porte, prie ton Père qui est dans le secret; et ton Père, qui voit dans le secret, te récompensera ouvertement.
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do; for they think that they shall be heard for the multitude of their words.
En priant, n'employez pas de vaines répétitions, comme le font les païens; car ils s'imaginent qu'ils seront entendus pour avoir beaucoup parlé.
8 Be not ye therefore like them; for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
Ne leur ressemblez donc pas, car votre Père sait de quoi vous avez besoin avant que vous ne le lui demandiez.
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: —Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;
Priez ainsi: "'Notre Père qui est aux cieux, que ton nom soit sanctifié.
10 thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
Que ton règne vienne. Que votre volonté soit faite sur la terre comme au ciel.
11 give us this day our daily bread;
Donne-nous aujourd'hui notre pain quotidien.
12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors;
Pardonnez-nous nos dettes, comme nous pardonnons aussi à nos débiteurs.
13 and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Ne nous soumets pas à la tentation, mais délivre-nous du malin. Car c'est à toi qu'appartiennent le Royaume, la puissance et la gloire pour les siècles des siècles. Amen.
14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you;
Car si vous pardonnez aux hommes leurs offenses, votre Père céleste vous pardonnera aussi.
15 but if ye do not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Mais si vous ne pardonnez pas aux hommes leurs offenses, votre Père ne vous pardonnera pas non plus vos offenses.
16 Moreover, when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance; for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men to be fasting. Truly do I say to you, They have received their reward.
« De plus, lorsque vous jeûnez, ne soyez pas comme les hypocrites, au visage triste. Car ils défigurent leur visage pour que les hommes les voient jeûner. Je vous le dis en toute certitude, ils ont reçu leur récompense.
17 But do thou, when thou fastest, anoint thy head, and wash thy face;
Mais toi, quand tu jeûnes, oins ta tête et lave ton visage,
18 that thou appear not to men to be fasting, but to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father, who seeth in secret, will reward thee.
afin que les hommes ne voient pas que tu jeûnes, mais ton Père qui est dans le secret; et ton Père, qui voit dans le secret, te récompensera.
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth, where the moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal;
« Ne vous amassez pas des trésors sur la terre, où la teigne et la rouille détruisent, et où les voleurs percent et dérobent;
20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumeth, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.
mais amassez-vous des trésors dans le ciel, où la teigne et la rouille ne détruisent pas, et où les voleurs ne percent pas et ne dérobent pas;
21 For where thy treasure is, there will thy heart be also.
car là où est ton trésor, là aussi sera ton cœur.
22 The eye is the lamp of the body. If thine eye he clear, thy whole body will be in light;
« La lampe du corps, c'est l'œil. Si donc ton œil est sain, tout ton corps sera rempli de lumière.
23 but if thine eye be disordered, thy whole body will be in darkness. If then the light that is within thee is darkness, how great that darkness!
Mais si ton œil est mauvais, tout ton corps sera dans les ténèbres. Si donc la lumière qui est en toi est ténèbres, combien sont grandes les ténèbres!
24 No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate one, and love the other; or else he will cleave to one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
« Nul ne peut servir deux maîtres, car ou bien il haïra l'un et aimera l'autre, ou bien il sera dévoué à l'un et méprisera l'autre. Vous ne pouvez pas servir à la fois Dieu et Mammon.
25 Therefore I say to you, Be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than food, and the body than raiment?
C'est pourquoi je vous dis de ne pas vous inquiéter pour votre vie: ce que vous mangerez, ou ce que vous boirez; ni pour votre corps: ce que vous porterez. La vie n'est-elle pas plus que la nourriture, et le corps plus que le vêtement?
26 Behold the birds of the air, that they sow not, nor reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not ye of much greater value than they?
Voyez les oiseaux du ciel: ils ne sèment pas, ils ne moissonnent pas, ils n'amassent pas dans des greniers. Votre Père céleste les nourrit. N'avez-vous pas beaucoup plus de valeur qu'eux?
27 But who of you by anxious thought can add to his life one cubit?
Lequel d'entre vous, en s'inquiétant, peut ajouter un instant à sa durée de vie?
28 And why are ye anxious about raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They toil not, neither do they spin;
Pourquoi vous inquiétez-vous du vêtement? Considérez les lys des champs, comment ils poussent. Ils ne travaillent pas, ils ne filent pas,
29 and yet I say to you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed like one of these.
et je vous dis que Salomon lui-même, dans toute sa gloire, n'était pas vêtu comme eux.
30 And if God so clothes the herbage of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into an oven, will he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
Mais si Dieu habille ainsi l'herbe des champs, qui existe aujourd'hui et qui demain sera jetée au four, ne vous habillera-t-il pas à plus forte raison, vous qui êtes de peu de foi?
31 Therefore be not anxious, saying, What shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or wherewith shall we he clothed?
Ne vous inquiétez donc pas, en disant: « Que mangerons-nous? », « Que boirons-nous? » ou « De quoi serons-nous vêtus? »
32 For after all these things do the gentiles seek; for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
Car les païens recherchent toutes ces choses; votre Père céleste sait que vous avez besoin de toutes ces choses.
33 But seek first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will also be given you.
Mais cherchez d'abord le Royaume de Dieu et sa justice, et toutes ces choses vous seront également données.
34 Be not then anxious about the morrow; for the morrow will be anxious about itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof.
Ne vous inquiétez donc pas du lendemain, car le lendemain s'inquiétera de lui-même. Le malheur de chaque jour est suffisant.
