< Matthew 5 >

1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into the mountain; and when he had sat down, his disciples came to him.
And seeing the multitudes, he went up into the mountain; and when he had sat down, his disciples came to him;
2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying: —
and he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are they who mourn; for they will be comforted.
Blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek; for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they will be filled.
Blessed are they that hunger and thirst for righteousness; for they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful; for they will obtain mercy.
Blessed are the merciful; for they shall receive mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart; for they will see God.
Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peace-makers; for they will be called sons of God.
Blessed are the peacemakers; for they shall be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are they who are persecuted for righteousness' sake; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they that are persecuted on account of righteousness; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye, when men revile you, and persecute you, and say every thing that is bad against you, falsely, for my sake.
Blessed are you, when they shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say every evil thing against you, falsely, on my account.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad; for great is your reward in heaven; for so did they persecute the prophets that were before you.
Rejoice, and leap for joy; for great is your reward in heaven: for so did they persecute the prophets who were before you.
13 Ye are the salt of the earth. But if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall itself be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot by men.
You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt has become tasteless, by what means shall it become salt again? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trod upon by men.
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid;
You are the light of the world: a city that lies upon a mountain can not be hid:
15 nor do men light a lamp, and put it under the bushel, but on the lamp-stand; and it giveth light to all that are in the house.
neither do men light a lamp and place it under the measure, but on the lamp-stand, and it gives light to all that are in the house.
16 In like manner let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
In this way let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
17 Think not that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets: I came not to destroy, but to fulfill.
Think not that I have come to make the law or the prophets of no effect. I have not come to make them of no effect, but to give them their full efficiency.
18 For truly do I say to you, Not till heaven and earth pass away, shall one jot or one tittle pass from the Law, till all be fulfilled.
For verily I say to you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one yod or one point shall in no way pass from the law till all be fulfilled.
19 Whoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, will be called the least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever shall do and teach them, he will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Whoever, therefore, shall make void one of the least of these commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say to you, Unless your righteousness shall exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, ye will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
For I say to you, That, unless your righteousness excel that of the scribes and Pharisees, you can by no means enter into the kingdom of heaven.
21 Ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, “Thou shalt not kill; and whoever shall kill, shall be in danger of the Judges.”
You have heard that it was said to the ancients: You shall not kill; and whoever shall kill, shall be liable to the sentence of the judges.
22 But I say to you, that whoever is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the Judges; and whoever shall say to his brother, Simpleton! shall be in danger of the Council; and whoever shall say, Fool! shall be in danger of hell-fire. (Geenna g1067)
But I say to you, Whoever is angry with his brother without a cause, shall be liable to the sentence of the judges. And whoever shall say to his brother, Worthless fellow, shall be liable to the sentence of the Sanhedrin. But who ever shall say, Impious wretch, shall be in danger of hell-fire. (Geenna g1067)
23 Therefore, if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there remember that thy brother hath aught against thee,
If, therefore, you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has any thing against you,
24 leave there thy gift before the altar, and go away; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
leave your gift there before the altar, and go, first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
25 Agree with thine adversary at law quickly, while thou art on the road with him; lest the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
Come to an agreement with your opponent at law quickly, while you are on the road with him, lest your opponent at law deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.
26 Truly do I say to thee, Thou wilt not come out thence, till thou hast paid the last farthing.
Verily, I say to you, You shall by no means come out thence, till you have paid the last farthing.
27 Ye have heard that it was said, “Thou shalt not commit adultery.”
You have heard that it was said: You shall not commit adultery.
28 But I say to you, that whoever looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
But I say to you, Whoever looks upon a woman to cherish desire for her, has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
29 And if thy right eye cause thee to offend, pluck it out, and cast it from thee; for it is better for thee that one of thy members should perish, than that thy whole body should be cast into hell. (Geenna g1067)
If, then, your right eye ensnare you, tear it out, and throw it from you; for it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body should be thrown into hell. (Geenna g1067)
30 And if thy right hand cause thee to offend, cut it off, and cast it from thee; for it is better for thee that one of thy members should perish, than that thy whole body should go away into hell. (Geenna g1067)
And if your right hand ensnare you, cut it off, and throw it from you; for it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body should be thrown into hell. (Geenna g1067)
31 And it was said, “Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement.”
It has been said: Whoever will put away his wife, let him give her a bill of divorce.
32 But I say to you, that whoever putteth away his wife, unless it be on account of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery; and whoever shall marry her when put away, committeth adultery.
But I say to you, Whoever shall put away his wife, unless on account of lewdness, causes her to commit adultery: and whoever marries her that is divorced, commits adultery.
33 Again ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, “Thou shalt not swear falsely, but shalt perform to the Lord thine oaths.”
Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients: You shall not swear falsely, but shall pay to the Lord your vows.
34 But I say to you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God;
But I say to you, Swear not at all: neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God;
35 nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King;
nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King:
36 nor shalt thou swear by thy head, for thou canst not make one hair white or black.
neither shall you swear by your head, for you can not make one hair white or black.
37 But let your language be, Yea, yea; Nay; nay; for whatever is more than these cometh of evil.
But let your word be, Yes, yes; No, no; for whatever is more than these is of the Evil One.
38 Ye have heard that it was said, “An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.”
You have heard that it was said: An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.
39 But I say to you, that ye resist not the evil-doer; but whoever smiteth thee on the right cheek, turn to him the other also;
But I say to you, Resist not the injurious. But whoever will smite you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also.
40 and if any one intends to sue thee at the law, and take thy coat, give up to him thy cloak also;
And to him that will go to law with you, and take away your coat, give your mantle also.
41 and whoever shall compel thee to go one mile, go with him two.
And whoever will compel you to go one mile, go with him two.
42 Give to him that asketh of thee; and from him that would borrow of thee, turn not away.
Give to him that asks of you; and from him that would borrow of you, turn not away.
43 Ye have heard that it was said, “Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy.”
You have heard that it was said: You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy.
44 But I say to you, Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you;
But I say to you, Love your enemies: bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who insult you and persecute you:
45 that ye may become sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
that you may be the sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun to rise upon the evil and the good, and causes it to rain on the just and on the unjust.
46 For if ye love those who love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans the same?
For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the publicans the same?
47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye that excelleth? Do not even the heathen the same?
And if you salute your brethren only, in what do you excel? Do not even the publicans so?
48 Be ye therefore perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Be you therefore perfect, as your Father who is in heaven is perfect.
