< Mark 5 >

1 And they came to the other side of the lake, into the country of the Gerasenes.
They arrived on the other side of the lake in the region of the Gerasenes.
2 And when he had come out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
When Jesus got out of the boat a man with an evil spirit came from the graveyard to meet him.
3 who had his dwelling in the tombs; and not even with a chain could any one bind him any longer;
This man lived among the tombs, and it had been impossible to tie him up any longer, even with a chain.
4 because he had often been bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been snapped asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces; and no one could master him;
He had often been tied up with chains and shackles, but he simply tore the chains apart and broke the shackles into pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him.
5 and continually, night and day, in the tombs and in the mountains, he was crying out, and cutting himself, with stones.
Day and night he was always shouting out among the tombs and in the hills nearby, cutting himself with sharp stones.
6 And seeing Jesus afar off, he ran and bowed down before him,
Seeing Jesus from a distance he ran and kneeled in front of him.
7 and cried out with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, do not torment me.
In a loud voice he cried out, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of Almighty God? Swear by God that you won't torture me!”
8 For he was saying to him, Unclean spirit, come out from the man.
For Jesus had already told the evil spirit to leave the man.
9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he saith to him, Legion is my name; for we are many.
Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is Legion, because we are many!” he replied.
10 And he besought him much not to send them out of the country.
He also repeatedly pleaded with Jesus not to send them a long way away.
11 Now there was there, by the mountain, a great herd of swine feeding.
A large herd of pigs was feeding on the hillside nearby.
12 And they besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.
The evil spirits pleaded with him, “Send us to the pigs so we can enter them.”
13 And he gave them leave. And the unclean spirits coming out, entered into the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep into the lake, about two thousand, and were drowned in the lake.
Jesus allowed them to do this. The evil spirits left the man and went into the pigs. The whole herd, about two thousand, rushed down the steep cliff into the sea and drowned.
14 And they that fed them fled, and told the news in the city and in the country. And they came to see what had been done.
The pig-keepers ran away, and spread the news all over town and in the countryside. People came out to see what had happened.
15 And they come to Jesus, and see him who had been possessed by demons, sitting, clothed, and in his right mind, —him who had had the legion; and they were afraid.
When they found Jesus they saw the man who had been demon-possessed sitting there, dressed, and in his right mind—the one who had the legion of evil spirits—and they became frightened!
16 And they who saw it told them how it befell him that was possessed by the demons, and concerning the swine.
Then those who had seen what had happened to the man who had been demon-possessed and the pigs told the others.
17 And they began to beseech him to depart from their borders.
They began pleading with Jesus to leave their district.
18 And when he was going on board the boat, he that had been possessed by the demons besought him that be might be with him.
As Jesus climbed into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.
19 And he did not permit him, but said to him, Go to thy house to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and that he hath had compassion on thee.
But Jesus refused, telling him, “Go home to your own people, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how he has been merciful to you.”
20 And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him; and all wondered.
So the man went on his way and began to tell the people of the Ten Cities everything Jesus had done for him, and everyone was amazed.
21 And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the ether side, a great multitude gathered about him; and he was by the lake.
Jesus went back again by boat to the other side of the lake where a large crowd gathered around him at the shore.
22 And there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and seeing him, he fell at his feet,
A synagogue leader, a man named Jairus, came to him. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet
23 and besought him much, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death; I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be saved and live.
and pleaded with him, saying, “My little daughter is about to die. Please come and place your hands on her so she may be healed and live.”
24 And he went with him; and a great multitude followed him, and pressed upon him.
So Jesus went with him. Everybody followed, crowding and jostling him.
25 And a woman, who had had an issue of blood twelve years,
A woman was there who had been ill from bleeding for twelve years.
26 and had undergone much at the hands of many physicians, and spent all that she had, and was not at all benefited, but rather grew worse,
She'd suffered considerably under the care of many doctors, and had spent all she had. But nothing helped her—in fact she'd grown worse.
27 having heard about Jesus, came in the crowd behind, and touched his garment.
She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd, and touched his cloak.
28 For she said, If I touch even his garments, I shall be made well.
She was telling herself, “If I can just touch his cloak, I'll be healed.”
29 And immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she perceived in her body that she was cured of her plague.
The bleeding stopped immediately, and she felt her body healed from her disease.
30 And Jesus immediately perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, turned round in the crowed, and said, Who touched my garments?
Jesus, sensing at once that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my cloak?”
31 And his disciples said to him, Thou seest the multitude pressing on thee, and dost thou say, Who touched me?
“Look at the crowd jostling you. What do you mean, ‘Who touched me?’” the disciples replied.
32 And he looked round to see her who had done this.
But Jesus went on looking around to see who had done it.
33 But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had been done to her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
The woman, realizing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him, and told him the whole truth.
34 And he said to her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee well; go in peace, and be recovered from thy plague.
“My daughter, your trust in me has healed you. Go in peace. You have been completely cured of your disease,” Jesus told her.
35 While he was yet speaking, there came from the house I of the ruler of the synagogue some who said, Thy daughter is dead; why dost thou trouble the Teacher any further?
While he was still speaking some people came from the home of the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “You don't need to bother the Teacher any longer.”
36 And Jesus, overhearing those words, saith to the ruler of the synagogue, Fear not; only believe.
But Jesus paid no attention to what they said. He told the synagogue leader, “Don't be afraid, just trust in me.”
37 And he suffered no one to follow him except Peter and James, and John the brother of James.
He wouldn't let anyone go with him except Peter, James, and James' brother John.
38 And they come to the house of the ruler of the synagogue; and he seeth a tumult, and people weeping and wailing greatly.
When they arrived at the synagogue leader's house, Jesus saw all the commotion, with people crying and wailing.
39 And going in, he saith to them, Why do ye make this confusion and weeping? The child is not dead, but is sleeping.
He went in and asked them, “Why are you making such a commotion with all this crying? The little girl isn't dead, she's just sleeping.”
40 And they laughed him to scorn. But putting them all out, he taketh the father of the child, and the mother, and those who were with him, and entereth where the child was.
They laughed scornfully at him. Jesus made everyone leave. Then he went into the room where the little girl was lying, taking with him the child's father and mother, and the three disciples.
41 And taking hold of the hand of the child, he saith to her, Talitha, kum; which is, when interpreted, Damsel, I say to thee, arise!
Taking the little girl's hand he said, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, get up!”
42 And immediately the damsel arose and walked; for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were greatly astonished.
The little girl, who was twelve years old, got up immediately and began walking around. They were completely astonished at what had happened.
43 And he charged them strictly that no one should know it, and bade that something should be given her to eat.
He gave them strict instructions not to let anyone know, and he told them to give the little girl something to eat.
