Luke 1
1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to arrange a narrative of those things which are fully believed among us,
Plusieurs ayant entrepris d'écrire l'histoire des faits accomplis parmi nous,
2 even as they were delivered to us by those who were eye-witnesses from the beginning and became ministers of the word,
— tels que nous les ont transmis ceux qui en ont été, dès le commencement, les témoins oculaires, et qui sont devenus ministres de la Parole,
3 it seemed good to me also, having accurately traced up all things from the first, to write to thee a connected account, most excellent Theophilus,

4 that thou mightst know the exact truth with regard to those things in which thou wast instructed.
afin que tu reconnaisses la solidité des enseignements que tu as reçus.
5 There was in the days of Herod, king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zachariah, of the course of Abijah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
Au temps d'Hérode, roi de Judée, il y avait un sacrificateur nommé Zacharie, de la classe d'Abia; sa femme était de la race d'Aaron et s'appelait Élisabeth.
6 And they were both righteous in the sight of God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
Ils étaient tous deux justes devant Dieu, et ils suivaient tous les commandements et toutes les prescriptions du Seigneur d'une manière irréprochable.
7 And they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both far advanced in years.
Ils n'avaient point d'enfants, parce qu'Elisabeth était stérile; et ils étaient tous deux avancés en âge.
8 And it came to pass, that, while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his course,
Or, il arriva, comme Zacharie remplissait devant Dieu les fonctions du sacerdoce, suivant le rang de sa classe,
9 according to the custom of the priesthood the lot fell to him to go into the temple of the Lord and burn the incense.
qu'il fut appelé par le sort, d'après la coutume établie parmi les sacrificateurs, à entrer dans le sanctuaire du Seigneur pour y offrir le parfum.
10 And the whole multitude of the people was praying without at the time of the incense.
Toute la multitude du peuple était dehors en prière, à l'heure où le parfum était offert.
11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing on the right of the altar of incense.
Alors un ange du Seigneur lui apparut, debout à droite de l'autel des parfums.
12 And Zachariah was troubled at the sight, and fear fell upon him.
Zacharie, en le voyant, fut troublé, et la frayeur le saisit.
13 But the angel said to him, Fear not, Zachariah; for thy prayer was heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son; and thou shalt call his name John.
Mais l'ange lui dit: Ne crains point, Zacharie; car ta prière a été exaucée. Elisabeth, ta femme, t'enfantera un fils, et tu lui donneras le nom de Jean.
14 And thou wilt have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice for his birth.
Il sera pour toi un sujet de joie et d'allégresse, et plusieurs se réjouiront de sa naissance.
15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and will drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit from his very birth.
En effet, il sera grand devant le Seigneur; il ne boira ni vin ni cervoise, et il sera rempli du Saint-Esprit dès le sein de sa mère.
16 And many of the sons of Israel will he turn to the Lord their God.
Il convertira plusieurs des fils d'Israël au Seigneur, leur Dieu;
17 And he will go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.
et lui-même marchera devant le Seigneur, dans l'esprit et avec la puissance d'Élie, pour ramener les coeurs des pères vers les enfants, et les rebelles à la sagesse des justes, afin de préparer au Seigneur un peuple bien disposé.
18 And Zachariah said to the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife is far advanced in years.
Zacharie dit à l'ange: A quoi reconnaîtrai-je cela? Car je suis vieux, et ma femme est avancée en âge.
19 And the angel answering said to him, I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to thee, and to tell thee these glad tidings.
L'ange lui répondit: Je suis Gabriel, qui me tiens devant Dieu; j'ai été envoyé pour te parler et t'annoncer cette bonne nouvelle.
20 And lo! thou shalt be silent, and not able to speak, until the day when these things shall come to pass, because thou didst not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their season.
Voici que tu vas devenir muet, et tu ne pourras parler jusqu'au jour où ces choses arriveront, parce que tu n'as pas cru à mes paroles, qui s'accompliront en leur temps.
21 And the people were looking for Zachariah, and wondering that he remained so long in the temple.
Cependant, le peuple attendait Zacharie, et s'étonnait de ce qu'il s'attardait dans le sanctuaire.
22 And on coming out, he was not able to speak to them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he was beckoning to them, and remained speechless.
Quand il sortit, Zacharie ne pouvait leur parler; et ils comprirent qu'il avait eu quelque vision dans le sanctuaire; il leur faisait des signes, et il demeura muet.
23 And it came to pass, when the days of his ministration were completed, that he returned to his house.
Lorsque les jours de son ministère furent achevés, il retourna dans sa maison.
24 And after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
Quelque temps après, Elisabeth sa femme, devint enceinte; elle se tint cachée durant cinq mois, et elle disait:
25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me to take away my reproach among men.
Voilà ce que le Seigneur m'a fait, quand il a jeté les yeux sur moi, pour ôter l'opprobre qui pesait sur moi parmi les hommes.
26 And in her sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, called Nazareth,
Au sixième mois. Dieu envoya l'ange Gabriel dans une ville de Galilée, appelée Nazareth,
27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
auprès d'une vierge fiancée à un homme nommé Joseph, de la maison de David; cette vierge s'appelait Marie.
28 And the angel came in to her and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored! the Lord is with thee.
L'ange, étant entré dans le lieu où elle était, lui dit: Je te salue, toi qui as été comblée de grâces; le Seigneur est avec toi.
29 And she was troubled at the words, and was considering what this salutation could mean.
Elle fut troublée de ces paroles, et elle se demandait ce que signifiait cette salutation.
30 And the angel said to her, Fear not, Mary; for thou hast found favor with God.
Alors l'ange lui dit: Ne crains point, Marie; car tu as trouvé grâce devant Dieu.
31 And lo! thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and hear a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.
Voici que tu enfanteras et mettras au monde un fils, à qui tu donneras le nom de Jésus.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of David his father;
Il sera grand, et il sera appelé le Fils du Très-Haut; et le Seigneur, Dieu, lui donnera le trône de David, son père.
33 and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. (aiōn g165)
Il régnera éternellement sur la maison de Jacob, et son règne n'aura pas de fin. (aiōn g165)
34 Then said Mary to the angel, How shall this be, since I know not a man?
Alors Marie dit à l'ange: Comment cela arrivera-t-il, puisque je ne connais point d'homme?
35 And the angel answering said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon thee, and the power of the Most High will overshadow thee; wherefore the holy one that is to be born will be called the Son of God.
L'ange lui répondit: L'Esprit saint viendra sur toi, et la puissance du Très-Haut te couvrira de son ombre; c'est pourquoi aussi, le saint enfant qui naîtra sera appelé le Fils de Dieu.
36 And lo! Elizabeth, thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who is called barren.
Et voici qu'Elisabeth, ta parente, a aussi conçu un fils en sa vieillesse; c'est ici le sixième mois de celle qui était appelée stérile.
37 For nothing will be impossible with God.
Car rien n'est impossible à Dieu!
38 And Mary said, Lo, the handmaid of the Lord! May it be to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
Marie répondit: Me voici: je suis la servante du Seigneur. Qu'il me soit fait selon ta parole! Puis l'ange la quitta.
39 And Mary arose and went in those days into the hill-country with haste, into a city of Judah.
En ces jours-là, Marie, s'étant levée, s'empressa d'aller dans le pays des montagnes, dans, une ville de Juda.
40 And she entered the house of Zachariah, and saluted Elizabeth.
Elle entra dans la maison de Zacharie, et salua Elisabeth.
41 And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,
Or il arriva, quand Elisabeth eut entendu la salutation de Marie, que le petit enfant tressaillit dans son sein; et Elisabeth fut remplie du Saint-Esprit.
42 and cried out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women; and blessed is the fruit of thy womb!
Alors élevant la voix, elle s'écria: Tu es bénie entre les femmes, et le fruit de tes entrailles est béni.
43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
Et d'où me vient cet honneur, que la mère de mon Seigneur vienne me visiter?
44 For lo! as soon as the voice of thy salutation came to my ears, the babe leaped in my womb in exultation.
Car ta voix, quand tu m'as saluée, n'a pas plus tôt frappé mes oreilles, que le petit enfant a tressailli de joie dans mon sein.
45 And blessed is she who hath believed that there will be an accomplishment of those things which were told her from the Lord.
Bienheureuse est celle qui a cru; car ce qui lui a été dit de la part du Seigneur aura son accomplissement!
46 And Mary said, My soul magnifieth the Lord,
Alors Marie dit: Mon âme magnifie le Seigneur,
47 and my spirit hath exulted in God my Saviour;
et mon esprit se réjouit en Dieu, qui est mon Sauveur,
48 for he hath looked upon the low estate of his handmaiden. For lo! from this time all generations will call me blessed;
parce qu'il a jeté les yeux sur la bassesse de sa servante. Et voici que désormais tous les âges m'appelleront bienheureuse;
49 for the Mighty One hath done great things for me; and holy is his name;
car le Tout-Puissant a fait pour moi de grandes choses. Son nom est saint,
50 and his mercy is from generation to generation on them that fear him.
et sa miséricorde s'étend d'âge en âge sur ceux qui le craignent.
51 He hath wrought mightily with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the device of their heart.
Il a manifesté la vigueur de son bras. Il a dissipé les desseins que les orgueilleux formaient dans leur coeur.
52 He hath cast down princes from thrones, and exalted men of low degree.
Il a renversé de leurs trônes les puissants, et il a élevé les humbles.
53 The hungry he hath filled with good things, and the rich he hath sent away empty.
Il a comblé de biens les affamés, et il a renvoyé les riches les mains vides.
54 He hath given help to Israel his servant, in remembrance of his mercy
Il est venu au secours d'Israël, son serviteur, et il s'est souvenu de sa miséricorde
— ainsi qu'il en avait parlé à nos pères — à l'égard d'Abraham et de sa postérité, pour toujours. (aiōn g165)
56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
Marie demeura avec Elisabeth environ trois mois; puis elle s'en retourna dans sa maison.
57 Now Elizabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
Cependant, le terme d'Elisabeth étant venu, elle enfanta un fils.
58 And her neighbors and her kinsfolk heard that the Lord had showed great mercy toward her; and they rejoiced with her.
Ses voisins et ses parents, ayant appris que le Seigneur avait fait éclater en elle la grandeur de sa miséricorde, s'en réjouissaient avec elle.
59 And it came to pass that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they were about to call him Zachariah, after the name of his father.
Le huitième jour, ils vinrent pour circoncire l'enfant; ils l'appelaient Zacharie, du nom de son père.
60 And his mother answering said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
Mais sa mère dit: Non! Il sera nommé Jean.
61 And they said to her, There is no one of thy kindred that is called by this name.
Ils lui dirent: Il n'y a personne dans ta famille qui soit appelé de ce nom.
62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him named.
Alors ils demandèrent au père, par signes, comment il voulait que l'enfant fût nommé.
63 And he asked for a writing-tablet, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they all marveled.
Zacharie ayant demandé des tablettes, écrivit: Jean est son nom. Et ils furent tous surpris.
64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue was loosed; and he spoke, blessing God.
A l'instant sa bouche s'ouvrit, sa langue se délia, et il parlait, bénissant Dieu.
65 And fear came on all that dwelt around them; and all these things were talked of throughout the whole of the hill-country of Judaea.
Tous leurs voisins furent remplis de crainte, et l'on s'entretenait de toutes ces choses dans tout le pays des montagnes de la Judée.
66 And all that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What then will this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.
Tous ceux qui les entendirent les conservèrent dans leur coeur et ils disaient: Que deviendra donc ce petit enfant? Car la main du Seigneur était avec lui.
67 And Zachariah his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,
Alors Zacharie, son père, fut rempli de l'Esprit saint. Il prophétisa et il dit:
68 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel! for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël, de ce qu'il a visité et racheté son peuple,
69 and hath raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of David his servant, —
et nous a suscité un puissant Sauveur dans la maison de David, son serviteur,
comme il l'avait proclamé par la bouche de ses saints prophètes, dès les anciens temps. (aiōn g165)
71 salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us,
Il nous délivre de nos ennemis et de la main de tous ceux qui nous haïssent.
72 to accomplish his mercy toward our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant,
Il exerce sa miséricorde envers nos pères et se souvient de sa sainte alliance;
73 the oath which he swore to Abraham our father,
car il a fait à Abraham, notre père, le serment de nous accorder cette grâce,
74 to grant to us, that being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we might worship him without fear,
qu'après avoir été délivrés de la main de nos ennemis, nous pourrions le servir sans crainte,
75 in holiness and righteousness before him, all our days.
en sa présence, dans la sainteté et la justice, tous les jours de notre vie.
76 And thou, child, shalt be called a prophet of the Most High; for thou shalt go in advance before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways,
Et toi, petit enfant, tu seras appelé le prophète du Très-Haut; car tu marcheras devant la face du Seigneur, pour préparer ses voies,
77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the remission of their sins
pour donner à son peuple la connaissance du salut par la rémission de ses péchés.
78 through the tender mercy of our God, whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us,
Les entrailles de la miséricorde de notre Dieu se sont émues, et le soleil levant nous a visités d'en haut,
79 to give light to those sitting in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
pour éclairer ceux qui sont assis dans les ténèbres et l'ombre de la mort, et pour conduire nos pas dans le chemin de la paix.
80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit; and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel.
Or, le petit enfant grandissait et se fortifiait en esprit; et il demeura dans les déserts jusqu'au jour de sa manifestation à Israël.
