Luke 1
1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to arrange a narrative of those things which are fully believed among us,
Cher Théophile, puisque plusieurs autres ont essayé de rédiger un récit des faits accomplis parmi nous,
2 even as they were delivered to us by those who were eye-witnesses from the beginning and became ministers of the word,
tels que nous les ont transmis ceux qui en ont été, dès l’origine, témoins oculaires et qui sont devenus ministres de la Parole,
3 it seemed good to me also, having accurately traced up all things from the first, to write to thee a connected account, most excellent Theophilus,
j’ai cru devoir, moi aussi, après m’être soigneusement informé de tout, depuis le commencement, t’en écrire une narration suivie,
4 that thou mightst know the exact truth with regard to those things in which thou wast instructed.
pour que tu reconnaisses la solidité des enseignements que tu as reçus.
5 There was in the days of Herod, king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zachariah, of the course of Abijah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
Aux jours d'Hérode, roi de Judée, vivait un prêtre nommé Zaccharie. Il était de la classe d'Abia et sa femme était d'entre les filles d'Aaron. Son nom était Élisabeth.
6 And they were both righteous in the sight of God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
Tous deux étaient justes devant Dieu, marchant irréprochables dans tous les commandements et toutes les ordonnances du Seigneur.
7 And they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both far advanced in years.
Ils n'avaient point d'enfants; parce qu'Élisabeth était stérile; et tous deux étaient avancés en âge.
8 And it came to pass, that, while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his course,
Or, le tour de sa classe étant venu de remplir devant Dieu les fonctions sacerdotales,
9 according to the custom of the priesthood the lot fell to him to go into the temple of the Lord and burn the incense.
il lui échut par le sort (qui était le mode usité entre les prêtres) d'entrer dans le sanctuaire du Seigneur pour y offrir l'encens.
10 And the whole multitude of the people was praying without at the time of the incense.
Pendant cette heure de l'encens, la foule du peuple restait au dehors et priait.
11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing on the right of the altar of incense.
Or, à la droite de l'autel de l'encens, apparut à Zaccharie un ange du Seigneur, debout devant lui.
12 And Zachariah was troubled at the sight, and fear fell upon him.
A sa vue Zaccharie fut troublé, et la crainte le saisit.
13 But the angel said to him, Fear not, Zachariah; for thy prayer was heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son; and thou shalt call his name John.
«Ne crains point, Zaccharie, lui dit l'ange; car ta prière a été exaucée et ta femme Élisabeth t'enfantera un fils; tu lui donneras le nom de Jean.
14 And thou wilt have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice for his birth.
Il sera ta joie et ton allégresse, et beaucoup se réjouiront de sa naissance. Devant le Seigneur,
15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and will drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit from his very birth.
en effet, il sera grand; il ne devra jamais boire ni vin, ni cervoise; et, tout rempli de l'Esprit saint dès les entrailles de sa mère,
16 And many of the sons of Israel will he turn to the Lord their God.
il ramènera au Seigneur leur Dieu, de nombreux enfants d'Israël.
17 And he will go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.
Lui-même, dans l'esprit et la vertu d'Élie, se mettra en marche devant le Seigneur, afin de faire revivre dans les enfants le coeur même des aïeux, de ramener les rebelles à la sagesse des justes, et de préparer au Seigneur un peuple bien disposé.» —
18 And Zachariah said to the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife is far advanced in years.
«A quoi reconnaîtrai-je cela, dit à l'ange Zaccharie, car je suis moi-même un vieillard, et ma femme est avancée en âge.»
19 And the angel answering said to him, I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to thee, and to tell thee these glad tidings.
L'ange lui répondit par ces paroles: «Je suis, Gabriel qui me tiens devant Dieu. Et j'ai été envoyé pour te parler et t'annoncer cette Bonne Nouvelle.
20 And lo! thou shalt be silent, and not able to speak, until the day when these things shall come to pass, because thou didst not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their season.
Et à cause de ton manque de foi en mes paroles, qui s'accompliront en leur temps, voilà que tu seras muet et ne pourras parler jusqu'au jour où ces choses arriveront.»
21 And the people were looking for Zachariah, and wondering that he remained so long in the temple.
Le peuple cependant attendait Zaccharie, et s'étonnait de le voir s'attarder dans le sanctuaire.
22 And on coming out, he was not able to speak to them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he was beckoning to them, and remained speechless.
Lorsqu'il sortit, il lui fut impossible de leur parler; on comprit qu'il avait eu une vision dans le sanctuaire. Lui-même le leur faisait entendre par signes. Zaccharie resta sourd-muet.
23 And it came to pass, when the days of his ministration were completed, that he returned to his house.
Quand la période de ses fonctions fut terminée, il retourna en sa maison;
24 And after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
ce fut alors que sa femme Élisabeth devint enceinte. Pendant cinq mois elle vécut dans le secret de sa demeure.
25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me to take away my reproach among men.
«Voilà, disait-elle, ce qu'a fait pour moi le Seigneur en ces jours où il m'a regardée pour mettre fin à mon opprobre parmi les hommes.»
26 And in her sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, called Nazareth,
Le sixième mois, Dieu envoya l'ange Gabriel dans une ville de Galilée, appelée Nazareth,
27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
vers une vierge, fiancée à un homme de la famille de David, nommé Joseph. Le nom de la vierge était Marie.
28 And the angel came in to her and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored! the Lord is with thee.
L'ange, étant entré où elle était, lui dit: «Salut! une grâce, t'a été faite; le Seigneur est avec toi!»
29 And she was troubled at the words, and was considering what this salutation could mean.
A ces paroles, Marie fut toute troublée; et elle se demandait ce que pouvait être une semblable salutation.
30 And the angel said to her, Fear not, Mary; for thou hast found favor with God.
«Ne crains point, Marie, reprit l'ange, car tu as trouvé grâce près de Dieu.
31 And lo! thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and hear a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.
Sache que tu vas concevoir en ton sein et enfanter un fils auquel tu donneras le nom de Jésus.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of David his father;
Il sera grand; on l'appellera: Fils du Très-Haut; à lui le Seigneur Dieu donnera le trône de David son père;
33 and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. (aiōn g165)
il régnera à jamais sur la maison de Jacob et son règne n'aura point de fin.» (aiōn g165)
34 Then said Mary to the angel, How shall this be, since I know not a man?
Alors Marie dit à l'ange: «Comment cela se fera-t-il, puisque je ne connais point, d’homme?»
35 And the angel answering said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon thee, and the power of the Most High will overshadow thee; wherefore the holy one that is to be born will be called the Son of God.
Et l'ange lui répondit par ces paroles: «L'Esprit saint viendra sur toi, et une puissance du Très-Haut t'enveloppera de son ombre. C'est pourquoi l'Être saint qui doit naître sera appelé Fils de Dieu!
36 And lo! Elizabeth, thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who is called barren.
Sache également qu'en sa vieillesse, ta parente Élisabeth, elle aussi, a conçu un fils, et que celle que l'on appelait stérile en est déjà à son sixième mois.
37 For nothing will be impossible with God.
Rien n'est impossible à Dieu.»
38 And Mary said, Lo, the handmaid of the Lord! May it be to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
Alors Marie dit: «Voici la servante du Seigneur. Qu'il me soit fait suivant ta parole.» Et l'ange la quitta.
39 And Mary arose and went in those days into the hill-country with haste, into a city of Judah.
En ces jours-là, Marie se hâta de partir, se dirigeant vers le pays des montagnes. Elle alla dans une ville de Juda.
40 And she entered the house of Zachariah, and saluted Elizabeth.
En entrant dans la maison de Zaccharie elle salua Élisabeth.
41 And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,
Et dès qu'Élisabeth eut entendu la salutation de Marie, l'enfant qu'elle portait tressaillit, et elle-même fut remplie d'Esprit saint.
42 and cried out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women; and blessed is the fruit of thy womb!
«Tu es bénie entre les femmes, s'écria-t-elle en élevant la voix, et le fruit de tes entrailles est béni!
43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
D'où me vient que la mère de mon Seigneur vienne me visiter?
44 For lo! as soon as the voice of thy salutation came to my ears, the babe leaped in my womb in exultation.
Aussitôt que ta voix, quand tu m'as saluée, a frappé mon oreille, l'enfant a tressailli de joie dans mon sein.
45 And blessed is she who hath believed that there will be an accomplishment of those things which were told her from the Lord.
Bienheureuse celle qui a cru à l'accomplissement de ce qui lui a été dit de la part du Seigneur!»
46 And Mary said, My soul magnifieth the Lord,
Et Marie dit: «Mon âme magnifie le Seigneur,
47 and my spirit hath exulted in God my Saviour;
Et mon esprit est transporté de joie en Dieu mon Sauveur,
48 for he hath looked upon the low estate of his handmaiden. For lo! from this time all generations will call me blessed;
Parce qu'il a abaissé son regard sur l'humilité de sa servante. Voilà que désormais toutes les générations m'appelleront la bienheureuse,
49 for the Mighty One hath done great things for me; and holy is his name;
Parce que le Tout-Puissant m'a fait de grandes choses! Son nom est saint,
50 and his mercy is from generation to generation on them that fear him.
Sa miséricorde se répand de génération en génération Sur ceux qui le craignent.
51 He hath wrought mightily with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the device of their heart.
Il a déployé la force de son bras, Il a dissipé les pensées des coeurs des superbes,
52 He hath cast down princes from thrones, and exalted men of low degree.
Il a jeté bas de leurs trônes les puissants, Et il a exalté les humbles;
53 The hungry he hath filled with good things, and the rich he hath sent away empty.
Il a comblé de biens les affamés, Et il a renvoyé les riches à vide;
54 He hath given help to Israel his servant, in remembrance of his mercy
Il a secouru Israël son serviteur, Il s'est souvenu de sa miséricorde,
Ainsi qu'il l'avait dit à nos pères, à Abraham et à sa postérité pour toujours.» (aiōn g165)
56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
Marie séjourna environ trois mois avec Élisabeth, et retourna ensuite en sa maison.
57 Now Elizabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
Parvenue au terme de sa grossesse, Élisabeth enfanta un fils.
58 And her neighbors and her kinsfolk heard that the Lord had showed great mercy toward her; and they rejoiced with her.
Ayant appris que le Seigneur faisait ainsi éclater par elle sa miséricorde, ses voisins et ses parents partagèrent sa joie.
59 And it came to pass that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they were about to call him Zachariah, after the name of his father.
Le huitième jour, ils vinrent pour la circoncision de l'enfant. Ils lui donnaient le nom de Zaccharie, celui de son père,
60 And his mother answering said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
quand sa mère prit la parole: «Non, dit-elle, il se nommera Jean.» —
61 And they said to her, There is no one of thy kindred that is called by this name.
«Mais, lui dirent les autres, personne dans ta famille ne porte ce nom.»
62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him named.
Et l'on demanda au père, par signes, comment il voulait le nommer.
63 And he asked for a writing-tablet, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they all marveled.
Alors, se faisant apporter des tablettes, Zaccharie écrivit ceci: «Jean est son nom.» Tout le monde fut surpris.
64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue was loosed; and he spoke, blessing God.
Aussitôt la banche de Zaccharie s'ouvrit, sa langue se délia et il se mit à parler et à bénir Dieu.
65 And fear came on all that dwelt around them; and all these things were talked of throughout the whole of the hill-country of Judaea.
Chacun dans le voisinage fut saisi de crainte et, dans la région des montagnes de Judée, il ne fut bruit que de toutes ces choses.
66 And all that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What then will this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.
Chacun en les apprenant les recueillait dans son coeur et disait: «Que sera donc cet enfant?» En effet, la main du Seigneur était avec lui.
67 And Zachariah his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,
Quant à Zaccharie, son père, il fut rempli d'Esprit saint et il prophétisa en ces termes:
68 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel! for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
«Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël! Car il a visité son peuple et opéré sa rédemption;
69 and hath raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of David his servant, —
Il nous a suscité un Sauveur puissant, De la maison de David, son serviteur.
(Ainsi qu'il l'avait annoncé par la bouche de ses saints prophètes qui jadis ont vécu.) (aiōn g165)
71 salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us,
Il nous délivre de nos ennemis, Et de la main de tous ceux qui nous haïssent;
72 to accomplish his mercy toward our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant,
Il montre sa miséricorde envers nos pères; Il se souvient de sa sainte alliance;
73 the oath which he swore to Abraham our father,
Du serment par lui juré à notre père Abraham; Il nous donne enfin à nous,
74 to grant to us, that being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we might worship him without fear,
délivrés de la main de nos ennemis, De le servir sans crainte, [de notre vie;
75 in holiness and righteousness before him, all our days.
De marcher devant lui dans la sainteté et la justice tous les jours
76 And thou, child, shalt be called a prophet of the Most High; for thou shalt go in advance before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways,
Et toi, enfant, tu seras appelé Prophète du Très-Haut; Car tu iras devant le Seigneur; Tu marcheras devant lui pour lui préparer les voies;
77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the remission of their sins
Tu donneras à son peuple la science du salut, Tu lui diras que ses péchés lui sont remis;
78 through the tender mercy of our God, whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us,
Que notre Dieu a des entrailles de miséricorde, Qu'il nous a regardés du haut des cieux, Que le soleil d'Orient se lève;
79 to give light to those sitting in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Qu'il illuminera ceux qui sont assis dans les ténèbres et l'ombre de la mort; Qu'il dirigera nos pas dans un chemin de paix.»
80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit; and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel.
L'enfant grandissait et son esprit se fortifiait, et jusqu'au jour de sa manifestation à Israël, les déserts furent sa demeure.
