Luke 1
1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to arrange a narrative of those things which are fully believed among us,
Après que plusieurs ont entrepris de composer une relation des choses dont on a parmi nous pleine conviction,
2 even as they were delivered to us by those who were eye-witnesses from the beginning and became ministers of the word,

3 it seemed good to me also, having accurately traced up all things from the first, to write to thee a connected account, most excellent Theophilus,

4 that thou mightst know the exact truth with regard to those things in which thou wast instructed.
afin que tu reconnaisses la certitude des enseignements que tu as reçus.
5 There was in the days of Herod, king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zachariah, of the course of Abijah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
Aux jours d’Hérode, roi de Judée, il y avait un prêtre, nommé Zacharie, de la classe d’Abia; et sa femme, qui était une des filles d’Aaron, s’appelait Élisabeth.
6 And they were both righteous in the sight of God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
Tous deux étaient justes devant Dieu, marchant dans tous les commandements et ordonnances du Seigneur, d’une manière irréprochable.
7 And they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both far advanced in years.
Ils n’avaient pas d’enfants, parce qu’Élisabeth était stérile, et ils étaient l’un et l’autre avancés en âge.
8 And it came to pass, that, while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his course,
Or, pendant que Zacharie s’acquittait devant Dieu des fonctions sacerdotales, dans l’ordre de sa classe,
9 according to the custom of the priesthood the lot fell to him to go into the temple of the Lord and burn the incense.
il fut désigné par le sort, selon la coutume observée par les prêtres, pour entrer dans le sanctuaire du Seigneur et y offrir l’encens.
10 And the whole multitude of the people was praying without at the time of the incense.
Et toute la multitude du peuple était dehors en prière à l’heure de l’encens.
11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing on the right of the altar of incense.
Mais un ange du Seigneur lui apparut, debout à droite de l’autel de l’encens.
12 And Zachariah was troubled at the sight, and fear fell upon him.
Zacharie, en le voyant, fut troublé, et la crainte le saisit.
13 But the angel said to him, Fear not, Zachariah; for thy prayer was heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son; and thou shalt call his name John.
Mais l’ange lui dit: « Ne crains pas, Zacharie, car ta prière a été exaucée; ta femme Élisabeth te donnera un fils que tu appelleras Jean.
14 And thou wilt have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice for his birth.
Il sera pour toi un sujet de joie et d’allégresse, et beaucoup se réjouiront de sa naissance;
15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and will drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit from his very birth.
car il sera grand devant le Seigneur. Il ne boira ni vin, ni rien qui enivre, car il sera rempli de l’Esprit-Saint dès le sein de sa mère.
16 And many of the sons of Israel will he turn to the Lord their God.
Il convertira beaucoup d’enfants d’Israël au Seigneur leur Dieu;
17 And he will go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.
et lui-même marchera devant lui, dans l’esprit et la puissance d’Élie, pour ramener les cœurs des pères vers les enfants, et les indociles à la sagesse des justes, afin de préparer au Seigneur un peuple parfait. »
18 And Zachariah said to the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife is far advanced in years.
Zacharie dit à l’ange: « À quoi reconnaîtrai-je [que] cela [sera]? Car je suis vieux, et ma femme est avancée en âge. »
19 And the angel answering said to him, I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to thee, and to tell thee these glad tidings.
L’ange lui répondit: « Je suis Gabriel, qui me tiens devant Dieu; j’ai été envoyé pour te parler et t’annoncer cette heureuse nouvelle.
20 And lo! thou shalt be silent, and not able to speak, until the day when these things shall come to pass, because thou didst not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their season.
Et voici que tu seras muet et ne pourras parler jusqu’au jour où ces choses arriveront, parce que tu n’as pas cru à mes paroles, qui s’accompliront en leur temps. »
21 And the people were looking for Zachariah, and wondering that he remained so long in the temple.
Cependant le peuple attendait Zacharie, et il s’étonnait qu’il demeurât si longtemps dans le sanctuaire.
22 And on coming out, he was not able to speak to them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he was beckoning to them, and remained speechless.
Mais étant sorti, il ne pouvait leur parler, et ils comprirent qu’il avait eu une vision dans le sanctuaire, ce qu’il leur faisait entendre par signes; et il resta muet.
23 And it came to pass, when the days of his ministration were completed, that he returned to his house.
Quand les jours de son ministère furent accomplis, il s’en alla en sa maison.
24 And after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
Quelque temps après, Élisabeth, sa femme, conçut, et elle se tint cachée pendant cinq mois, disant:
25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me to take away my reproach among men.
« C’est une grâce que le Seigneur m’a faite, au jour où il m’a regardée pour ôter mon opprobre parmi les hommes. »
26 And in her sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, called Nazareth,
Au sixième mois, l’ange Gabriel fut envoyé de Dieu dans une ville de Galilée appelée Nazareth,
27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
auprès d’une vierge qui était fiancée à un homme de la maison de David, nommé Joseph, et le nom de la vierge était Marie.
28 And the angel came in to her and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored! the Lord is with thee.
L’ange étant entré où elle était, lui dit: « Je te salue, pleine de grâce; le Seigneur est avec toi, tu es bénie entre les femmes. »
29 And she was troubled at the words, and was considering what this salutation could mean.
Marie l’ayant aperçu, fut troublée de ses paroles, et elle se demandait ce que pouvait signifier cette salutation.
30 And the angel said to her, Fear not, Mary; for thou hast found favor with God.
L’ange lui dit: « Ne crains pas, Marie, car tu as trouvé grâce devant Dieu.
31 And lo! thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and hear a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.
Voici que tu concevras en ton sein, et tu enfanteras un fils, et tu lui donneras le nom de Jésus.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of David his father;
Il sera grand, on l’appellera le Fils du Très-Haut; le Seigneur Dieu lui donnera le trône de David son père;
33 and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. (aiōn g165)
il régnera éternellement sur la maison de Jacob, et son règne n’aura pas de fin. » (aiōn g165)
34 Then said Mary to the angel, How shall this be, since I know not a man?
Marie dit à l’ange: « Comment cela se fera-t-il, puisque je ne connais pas d’homme? »
35 And the angel answering said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon thee, and the power of the Most High will overshadow thee; wherefore the holy one that is to be born will be called the Son of God.
L’ange lui répondit: « L’Esprit-Saint viendra sur toi, et la vertu du Très-Haut te couvrira de son ombre. C’est pourquoi l’être saint qui naîtra (de toi) sera appelé Fils de Dieu.
36 And lo! Elizabeth, thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who is called barren.
Déjà Élisabeth, ta parente, a conçu elle aussi, un fils dans sa vieillesse, et c’est actuellement son sixième mois, à elle que l’on appelle stérile:
37 For nothing will be impossible with God.
car rien ne sera impossible à Dieu. »
38 And Mary said, Lo, the handmaid of the Lord! May it be to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
Marie dit alors: « Voici la servante du Seigneur, qu’il me soit fait selon ta parole. » Et l’ange la quitta.
39 And Mary arose and went in those days into the hill-country with haste, into a city of Judah.
En ces jours-là, Marie se levant, s’en alla en hâte au pays des montagnes, en une ville de Juda.
40 And she entered the house of Zachariah, and saluted Elizabeth.
Et elle entra dans la maison de Zacharie, et salua Élisabeth.
41 And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,
Or, dès qu’Élisabeth eut entendu la salutation de Marie, l’enfant tressaillit dans son sein, et elle fut remplie du Saint-Esprit.
42 and cried out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women; and blessed is the fruit of thy womb!
Et élevant la voix, elle s’écria: « Tu es bénie entre les femmes, et le fruit de tes entrailles est béni.
43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
Et d’où m’est-il donné que la mère de mon Seigneur vienne à moi?
44 For lo! as soon as the voice of thy salutation came to my ears, the babe leaped in my womb in exultation.
Car ta voix, lorsque tu m’as saluée, n’a pas plus tôt frappé mes oreilles, que mon enfant a tressailli de joie dans mon sein.
45 And blessed is she who hath believed that there will be an accomplishment of those things which were told her from the Lord.
Heureuse celle qui a cru
46 And Mary said, My soul magnifieth the Lord,
Et Marie dit: « Mon âme glorifie le Seigneur.
47 and my spirit hath exulted in God my Saviour;
Et mon esprit tressaille de joie en Dieu, mon Sauveur,
48 for he hath looked upon the low estate of his handmaiden. For lo! from this time all generations will call me blessed;
Parce qu’il a jeté les yeux sur la bassesse de sa servante. Voici, en effet, que désormais toutes les générations m’appelleront bienheureuse,
49 for the Mighty One hath done great things for me; and holy is his name;
Parce qu’il a fait en moi de grandes choses, Celui qui est puissant, Et dont le nom est saint,
50 and his mercy is from generation to generation on them that fear him.
Et dont la miséricorde s’étend d’âge en âge, Sur ceux qui le craignent.
51 He hath wrought mightily with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the device of their heart.
Il a déployé la force de son bras; Il a dissipé ceux qui s’enorgueillissaient dans les pensées de leur cœur;
52 He hath cast down princes from thrones, and exalted men of low degree.
Il a renversé de leur trône les potentats, Et il a élevé les petits;
53 The hungry he hath filled with good things, and the rich he hath sent away empty.
Il a comblé de biens les affamés, Et les riches, il les a renvoyés les mains vides.
54 He hath given help to Israel his servant, in remembrance of his mercy
Il a pris soin d’Israël son serviteur, Se ressouvenant de sa miséricorde,
(Ainsi qu’il l’avait promis à nos pères) Envers Abraham et sa race, pour toujours. » (aiōn g165)
56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
Marie demeura avec Élisabeth environ trois mois, et s’en retourna chez elle.
57 Now Elizabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
Cependant, le temps s’accomplit où Élisabeth devait enfanter, et elle mit au monde un fils.
58 And her neighbors and her kinsfolk heard that the Lord had showed great mercy toward her; and they rejoiced with her.
Ses voisins et ses parents, ayant appris que le Seigneur avait signalé en elle sa miséricorde, se réjouissaient avec elle.
59 And it came to pass that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they were about to call him Zachariah, after the name of his father.
Le huitième jour, ils vinrent pour circoncire l’enfant, et ils le nommaient Zacharie d’après le nom de son père.
60 And his mother answering said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
Mais sa mère, prenant la parole: « Non, dit-elle, mais il s’appellera Jean. »
61 And they said to her, There is no one of thy kindred that is called by this name.
Ils lui dirent: « Il n’y a personne dans ta famille qui soit appelé de ce nom. »
62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him named.
Et ils demandaient par signe à son père comment il voulait qu’on le nommât.
63 And he asked for a writing-tablet, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they all marveled.
S’étant fait apporter une tablette, il écrivit: « Jean est son nom »; et tous furent dans l’étonnement.
64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue was loosed; and he spoke, blessing God.
Au même instant sa bouche s’ouvrit, sa langue [se délia]; et il parlait, bénissant Dieu.
65 And fear came on all that dwelt around them; and all these things were talked of throughout the whole of the hill-country of Judaea.
La crainte s’empara de tous les habitants d’alentour, et partout dans les montagnes de la Judée, on racontait toutes ces merveilles.
66 And all that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What then will this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.
Tous ceux qui en entendirent parler les recueillirent dans leur cœur, et ils disaient: « Que sera donc cet enfant? Car la main du Seigneur était avec lui. »
67 And Zachariah his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,
Et Zacharie, son père, fut rempli de l’Esprit-Saint, et il prophétisa, en disant:
68 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel! for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
« Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d’Israël, Parce qu’il a visité et racheté son peuple.
69 and hath raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of David his servant, —
Et qu’il a suscité une Force pour nous sauver, Dans la maison de David, son serviteur,
(Ainsi qu’il l’a promis par la bouche de ses saints, De ses prophètes, dès les temps anciens). (aiōn g165)
71 salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us,
Pour nous sauver de nos ennemis Et du pouvoir de tous ceux qui nous haïssent.
72 to accomplish his mercy toward our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant,
Afin d’exercer sa miséricorde envers nos pères. Et de se souvenir de son pacte saint;
73 the oath which he swore to Abraham our father,
Selon le serment qu’il fit à Abraham, notre père, De nous accorder que,
74 to grant to us, that being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we might worship him without fear,
sans crainte, Affranchis du pouvoir de nos ennemis, Nous le servions,
75 in holiness and righteousness before him, all our days.
avec une sainteté et une justice Dignes de ses regards, tous les jours de notre vie.
76 And thou, child, shalt be called a prophet of the Most High; for thou shalt go in advance before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways,
Quant à toi, petit enfant, tu seras appelé prophète du Très-Haut, Car tu marcheras devant la face du Seigneur, Pour lui préparer les voies;
77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the remission of their sins
Pour apprendre à son peuple à reconnaître le salut Dans la rémission de leurs péchés:
78 through the tender mercy of our God, whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us,
Par l’effet de la tendre miséricorde de notre Dieu, Grâce à laquelle nous a visités, d’en haut, le Soleil levant,
79 to give light to those sitting in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Pour éclairer ceux qui sont assis dans les ténèbres et l’ombre de la mort, Pour diriger nos pas dans la voie de la paix. »
80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit; and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel.
Or l’enfant croissait et se fortifiait en esprit, et il demeura dans le désert jusqu’au jour de sa manifestation devant Israël.
